But in today's class, we'll be taking look at the second and third stanzaz. Which read thus;

But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage /
Can seldom see through his bars of rage / His
wings are clipped and his feet are tied / So he
opens his throat to sing. / The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill / Of things unknown but
longed for still / And his tune is heard on the
distant hill for / The caged bird sings of freedom.

Analysis: A caged bird is unable to enjoy the freedom of other birds due to its cage, clipped wings, and tied feet. African-Americans during Angelou's time were restricted by unfair laws and societal oppression. Freedom is symbolized by the caged bird's beautiful song. As long as the bird is in the cage, he will not reach his true potential. Although the context of the poem is
important, one shouldn't limit its application to one group of people or one period.

A caged bird could be any group of oppressed
people. It could mean individuals. The cage could
represent society, physical barriers, fear,
addiction or any self-defeating behavior, with the
bird's song representing the true self that longs
for something greater in life.[/b]

I think, so far, we've come to the place where we could say 'The End'. Goof night all.

cisse7575:
The small ironies that most of us encounter in our everyday lives can provide a poet with some of the best material for poetry. But we have to un-peel our eyes, de-sensitize ourselves to our environment.  How many of us could write a poem, an exact verbal description of our journey to work? How often you passed that crumbling warehouse and not noticed the graffiti? 'Vendors'? Or realized that they've changed the supermarket on the road from Oshodi to Festac?

Describe your world to yourself as you move around it. What best describes your living room? Your street? Your town? Who lives here? Write lists of words and phrases and try to be as precise as possible in your observations. As poets, we should get used to knowing and understanding the meaning of words, we must buy new edition of dictionary and read it. The broader your vocabulary, the more ideas you will be able to express.
WOW! I'm just seeing this.
I actually wrote a poem on THE IRONY OF A GOOD DAY.
I'll post it when I finish the typing.

The cold was high,
and there was no light
throughout the night.
I woke with a smile,
it is morning at last
and the day was bright.

It was bright and fair
To the store I stared,
but nothing was there.
I shook my head
and fell my back on bed.
what a day in a the year.

Oh happy day
A day with nothing to take,
that brought a sad look to face.
Just disappear. I my mind I say,
but it was a very long day.

The day of joy
in which a child was born
into the family of my neighbor.
A bouncing baby boy
indeed is a thing of joy
in the middle of depression, my heart still rejoice.

the name Limerick is intriguing

and like Free Verse, it has its own pattern

but first what is Limerick?
Re: Poetry Classes For Beginners - NPC (Signup Thread) by JigsawKillah(m): 9:24pm On Apr 14, 2015
What is a Limerick?

A limerick is often a funny poem with a strong beat. Limericks are very light hearted poems and can sometimes be utter nonsense. They are great for kids to both read and write as they are short and funny.

Re: Poetry Classes For Beginners - NPC (Signup Thread) by JigsawKillah(m): 9:28pm On Apr 14, 2015
Up Next, is the structure of a Limerick

The Structure of a Limerick Poem

A Limerick consists of five lines.

The first line of a limerick poem usually begins with 'There was a....' and ends with a name, person or place.

The last line of a limerick is normally a little farfetched or unusual.

.

A limerick should have a rhyme scheme of aabba:
This means lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme .

Also, lines 1,2 and 5 should have 7 – 10 syllables and lines 3 and 4 should have 5 – 7 syllables.

Example of A Limerick Poem

'There was an old man with a beard
Who said, 'It is just as I feared,
Two owls and a hen
A lark and a wren
Have all built their nests in my beard!'

Study together, come out best

With her by my side, I missed a test

Re: Poetry Classes For Beginners - NPC (Signup Thread) by cisse7575(m): 9:11pm On Apr 23, 2015
We once again apologise for missing the last class.

Tonight's class, though short, it will be voluminous in terms of the class contents, and it is respectively dedicated to the god of sonnets.

First of all, as poets, we all must remember an icon, a great poet. He 'goes' by the name Williams Shakespeare, I believe we all know who he was and his contributions to the poetry world. Today marks his birthday (Baptised day was recorded instead) in April 23, 1564, he was baptised. And he died 52 years after he was baptised in the year April 23, 1616.
