[b]A lot has been said about Gov. Musa Kwakwaso's comment on Almajiris kicking Jonathan out of government, while I am not interested with the exact words Kwankwaso used, I find irritating, the deliberate and desperate attempt by certain sections of the polity to create a new meaning to the word Almajiri.

The word Almajiri is from the Arab word 'Almuhaajir' which means male migrant or 'Al-Muhajirun' which means emigrant, a concept which was derived from the migration of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina.

The word Almajiri in Northern Nigeria is referred to a mendicant (one who practises begging with religious affiliations), an Almajiri lives away from his home, and is under the custody of a malam while studying the qu'ran, in the process of studying the qu'ran, the Almajiri practices 'renunciation' hence an Almajiri has to beg for food to sustain his life, for the period up on till he is able to recite the holy qu'ran thoroughly and commit it to memory after which, the Almajiri leaves the malam.

An Almajiri is not an under aged person as certain people will now want us to believe, some have even gone far to say Kwankwaso's statement is proof of the northern elites approval for under aged voters. The same way Patience Jonathan erroneously referred to Almajiris as 'born troways' so is it people are now erroneously reffering to Almajiris as under aged.

An Almajiri is simply a begger who begs on religious grounds.

..So, at what age( average) will the Almajiri be able to recite the qu'ran thoroughly and commit it to memory?

a. 9 - 12
b. 12 - 15
c. 15 - 18
d. 18 and above

People might be right if they term almajiri's under age voters. cool

So it is safe to say that Almajiri's in the context used means underage voters.

most almajirai are between 9-18. Hence they are children [and underage voters]…

Hmmm....

My question is if not that PDP too are complicit in the case of so called under age voters, why didn't they try to stop it? afterall they control the security forces which they even used to imprison people like Okorocha and Oshiomhole in the south?

Who can say for sure that PDP are not even the ones who used under age voters? Abi the guys shouting about this went to check which party they were voting?

I think I'll manage an underage voter situation because both parties have equal opportunity to help themselves unlike the case in the SS and SE where guns, knives, machete etc were used to chase both over aged and under aged voters away to enable ghosts line up to thumbprint ballot papers. Imagine Rivers state with all the blood shed a day to the election and on the election day proper having 75% voter turnout?

The way they scream this under aged voting self, you'll be forgiven if you start assuming only children live in the north.

GMB won in Benue too, a state he's meant to be hated considering his tribe and religion. Will you also blame it on under aged voting?

@OP

Thank you for that education. We in the SW know, and the mischievous lagooners knew this fact before criticizing Musa Kwankwaso, but they want to use anything as leverage.

Let's assume that almajiris are underaged, do they automatically become rich and well off at the age of 18 or are they still on the street?

GEJ lost because he is incompetent and corrupt. No amount of phone calls can wash his sins.

And it's an insult for SS/SE to think SW would vote for GEJ just because he's a Southerner. What's our business with that? We vote wisely, beyond brotherhood and tribalism........we vote for the chosen, the most qualified for the job.

Some monks in the Catholic church also take vows of poverty or renunciation of material things I think. Its very similar to that described by the op although they dont carry begging bowls about like the almajiri but I'm sure they also rely on the charity of the willing

thanks my bro , well from the info I got here www.vanguardngr.com/2012/04/jonathan-launches-school-for-almajiri-in-sokoto/ both gej and northerners see almajiri as primary students " not even secondary" , so I believe kwankwasho going that side means he"kwankwasho" believes those primary students voted gej out. THanks and God bless u

I got it. I am doing it repeatedly to tell you that your topic makes no sense.

A neutral guy here, chaloner, has done justice to this topic.

It is a fact that almajiris(underaged) voted against GEJ - Kwankwaso.

even at 50, we have almajiri. We have mallam as the teacher and almajiri as the student.

What kwankwaso was trying to say is, gej and his cronies referred to northerners as almajiri, now the almajiris have voted him out. Isn't that so clear? You call everybody north abokii or almajiri, what is now the offence in now saying thesame abokii/almajiri voted gej out?

Kwankwasobwas trying to tell u that the so called abokii/almajiri you southerners abuse because your son is in power have the power to kick him out.

The almajiris don't make up to 10 % of the northern population. Kwankwaso said this with the intention of indirectly replying to pejs insult.
