Xenophobia: View Of A Nigerian Living In SA by madejibo: 4:59am On Apr 16, 2015
My view on the Xenophobia attacks and the South African people. I will give a honest view as a Nigerian living in south Africa. Please note that this is entirely my view.
Let me first of all correct the notion that South Africans hate Nigerians, this is false, very wrong but I will get back to this.
The recent Xenophobia attacks started when allegedly the King of Zulu (alleged because I was not there) said the people should not wait for politicians before they chase out illegal immigrants back to their countries. This prompted locals of Kwazulu Natal to start looting foreign owned shops, in the process a South African woman was killed by a foreigner and this escalated the Xenophobia attacks.
These attacks were mainly in townships, which forced about 700 foreigners out of these affected areas. The South African government provided make shift accommodation for them.
Most foreigners that live in this townships are mostly foreigners that are on refugee status. In SA, we have a lot of these asylum seekers. It pains me personally when I see Nigerians going through harsh conditions to claim asylum. In the process of claiming this status, Nigerians lie and tarnish the image of Nigeria and a lot of South Africans know that these Nigerians are lying but they still approve their requests.
Back to the xenophobia attacks, most of these attacks are carried out by miscreants, who are in the minority and Nigerians are really not affected because you hardly find Nigerians living in the townships. Myself and my wife weren't even aware that it was serious until we started getting calls from Nigeria.
It escalated into the Central Business District of Kwazulu Natal (Durban) but in a swift response, the South African Police Service (SAPS) curbed the spread. In Durban's CBD, shops owned by South Africans too were targeted. There was apprehension that it was going to escalate to Johannesburg, yesterday, so a lot of shops in the CBD of Johannesburg were closed.
The president, Jacob Zuma has condemned it, South Africans on the streets have condemned it, more security agents have been deployed to the streets and peace seems to have been restored. Foreigners have been guaranteed safety by the SA government.
I said before that South Africans do not hate foreigners, actually they are warm people and I will give you reasons. I have schooled in SA, my wife too schooled in SA, a lot of scholarships and funding are giving to foreigners. How many African countries can do this? I have seen Nigerians going to the best schools in SA, from undergraduate level through to PHD level who enjoy absolutely free education, when I say absolutely free I mean it. This will include free accommodation and feeding. In some cases, some collect stipends.
A lot of Nigerians too abuse the hospitality and am so ashamed to say it. I won't even go into the dirty things which Nigerians do. I have been in a situation before that my wife suddenly took ill in the middle of the night and we rushed to a hospital, we got first class attention in a government hospital and it was free.
Yes, there are cases that as a Nigerian you feel that you are a foreigner, but seriously it is not anybody's fault. If you are an educated Nigerian and you schooled in SA, you are respected. If you have a white collar job, you are respected. A lot of Nigerians are Doctors, Lecturers, Engineers in SA. If Nigeria is right a lot of South African businesses want to move into Nigeria.
Also, a lot of Nigerians have married South Africans and you will see the spouses of the Nigerians ready to imbibe the Nigerian culture. This marriage issue, a lot of Nigerians too have abused it, Nigerians with wives at home have come to SA to marry for the sake of papers, some just marry for papers and a lot of South Africans are aware. The South Africans love our musicians and movies. The most popular station in SA (outside SABC) is African Magic because of. Nollywood.
In conclusion, have not heard of any Nigerian that was attacked in these recent clashes and I want to use this opportunity to thank those that contacted us to ask after our safety. We are fine!

I am glad you said this is your point of view. However, i was about to make some statements about it until i started reading the later end of your story which also confirmed the class at which you are telling the story from. You can say all these thing but the truth be told that these attacked were specigically targeted at black forigners and Nigeria as we all know would make its larger percentage.

In as much as this is your truth, i do not doubt it. Lets go a little lower to people who do not have the oppirtunity of having white collar jobs and going to school. The hustlers and the street roamers, the below average foreigners. They are the ones directly affected by this. Until we hear their own part of the story, then and only then can we conclude that SAcans are not xenophobic as the world think they are.

It appears u want to whitewash the actions of prejudiced S'Africans. Fact still remains dat a good number of black s'africans are lazy and lack initiative. They believe that the only way to secure jobs and opportunities is by intimidating black foreigners out of the country.

And I dont think u speak for those who have less opportunties as u do. They are the ones who bear the brunt of d attacks....not you.

Sir, to be honest SA society does not permit foreigners to "hustle". A lot of south africans are unskilled and therefor look for the hustling jobs. I don't think it is fair for a Nigerian or any other Nationality to go to sa and compete with their citizen. BTW the law in SA does not permit a foreigner to remain in SA if you don't have some skills which they call scarce skill or exceptional skills, so if you are living there without such skills you are either an asylum seeker or illegal.
Another set of people allowed to live in SA are business owners an by law your business must worth R5m. They have laws, we must respect their laws

some nigerians though, op you are formidably forming sophistication when you don't know the next south african that will wanna cause a harm on you. Sorry but are telling us SA is not a xenophobic country or what? Cause even the so few reasonable south Africans have launched a campaign against it(#stopxenophobia) and here you are saying things that are absolutely senseless. And you even concocted your lies that so many nigerians/foreigners are enjoying free education, free blah blah blah. SMH

Anyway you can tell your tales by moonlight to the birds of the sky.

• South Africa is a xenophobic nation
• The whites south Africans are racist
• the black south Africans for whatever reason best known to them have this xenophobia against the other africans in their nation.

This is well known fact that every african foreigner living in SA knows and you op is also suppose to know this fact except you are entirely living in the south Africa of Jupiter.

Sir, there is a lot of 419, yahooyahoo in Nigeria, will you conclude that Nigerians are fraudulent?
The average South African is not xenophobic and that's the truth. Those guys that carry out these attacks are criminals using foreigners as excuse to loot.
Yes there is a campaign to stop this attacks, this goes to. Show that a majority want this to stop

@the highlighted, but you were telling us how sans are friendly, very accommodating, very hospitable in your earlier post. Look I have lived in SA for close to two years and I can categorically tell you that 65% of black SANs are xenophobic. Some of them even find it extremely difficult to hide the "hate" they have against other Africans in their nation who they perceived as job grabbers or women snatchers.

Rumours has it one certain time that the Zulus were asked to bring the heads of many black immigrants to appease the gods of the lands. grin I don't know how true the story is but I know those Zulus can execute the act without giving a damn about the consequences. Believe me I have seen where south Africans gang-up against one malawian dude, they used every kind of weapon on that fella, and the funny thing was that cops were cheering them up.

Go to chaka(whatever the call the ghetto in soweto) and tell them you are a foreigner, my brother I bet you won't be able to comeback with your complete two legs.

Every country has its short-comings and its dirty baggage, but xenophobia is one disease that is doing a great damage to mzanzi which has to be stopped ASAP

Let me come in here. Is it right to call SA a xenophobic country? Hmmm Yes. However there are lots of good south Africans which I have net and can vouch for. Although they are in the minority. The fact that you're fortunate to be in a secure job and residential environment does not change the fact. I blame this trend of xenophobia to lack of exposure. Majority of south Africans are poor in geography and as such do not understand the African continent. Many have not travelled out of SA so they do not understand what living outside shores mean. Many I did interact with are even scared of venturing outside owning to the way their people treat foreigners. Oh yes SA offers free education and medical treatment to foreigners of which I give the government a lot of credit. Foreigners still contribute largely to the economy of the country. The average SA citizen is lazy and wants to depend on government hand outs and as such no private business owner can tolerate such work force hence the preference of hardworking foreigners. I'll agree with the OP that majority of those carrying these attacks are the street urchins but they enjoy the support of in my estimate a large black SA population. If you have seen any of the recent gory photos of the killings in SA you can see a Policeman laughing just behind a burning man. Search for the pictures they are here on nairaland. My aim is not to paint south Africans in a bad light but to set the records straight. Any one found justifying the killings of innocent people based on a general notion of foreigners taking the jobs of locals is an accomplice. This is my submission.

Nice response. Sadly every country in the world has it's own bad eggs, it will be unfair to characterize the entire citizens of a country because of some minorities. I just hope all these xenophobic attacks would stop. There's no country without immigrants.

Re: Xenophobia: View Of A Nigerian Living In SA by ayox2003: 8:12am On Apr 16, 2015
Thank you OP.

There's a psychological term called Availability Bias.

Availability Bias: Availability Bias is when a minor, rare, uncommon occurrence is publicized numerous times to make people believe it happens frequently. An example is how lottery companies advertise those who win the ultimate prize money, making people believe that they could be one of the winners. The 'advert' makes people play lotteries as much as they can. In the end, research has shown that 90% of lottery players never get to win at all while 5% wins just once or twice.

Calling SA a Xenophobic country is like calling Nigeria a human ritualist nation or saying India is a rapist country (Fact check: you're more likely to be raped in America than in India) or believing US is a racist country because cops shoot Blacks (Fact check: A black man is the president of the US).

That you hear of an occurrence in the news every other day doesn't make it the truth of the situation on ground. Mind you, most people with the Xenophobic chorus have never even been to the country.

Long story short: Xenophobia is just another availability bias swallowed by Africans hook, line and sinker.

Frawzey.

I don't even know where to start with you.
Just last week, two Nigerian students were murdered in cold blood by xenophobic scums in southafrica.
You think you are safe and secured because of your tiny white collar job.?
Don't worry, the next wave of xenophobia will claim your life and you won't be mourned, you selfish cunnt.

Thank God you said CHASED GHANIANS OUT.. and not Killed Ghanaians..remember this was during Nigerians economic down time which i will call recession. At least they still have their live intact to make their country a better place now.... Nigerians do not Kill foreigners even when they are usually found among the terrorist destroying our country...we would rather use the Immigration to deport them back to their country... so don't ever compare Nigerians to South Africans that knows nothing but cravings for the blood of their African brothers who are their mercy..I remember when Liberia was at war... there was a refugee camp that was set out for them in one of Nigerian suburb.. these people needed to survive beyond the refugee camp lives style, BY working and fending for themselves and their families.. they mixed with the locals and started doing menial job that poor Nigerians do such as COMMERCIAL BIKE riding, hair making, sales personnel etc... they were doing it along side with the local as competitors. these are low income job.. no body took arm to kill them..some were how ever given scholarship to attend schools..etc. they all lived here safely till their country got better and they started going back one after the other..some still remained behind because their business .. ALL you south Africans.. you better reconcile with your WHITE CITIZEN..because that is another keg of Gun powder you guys are sitting on..that will blow up some day, ur frequent killing of WHITE in your country will make them strike one day, One day and when they strike, it will be very hard..I pray your country remain in peace, if not..you all should just sign your death warrant and stay within your country because we True Africans are waiting for you with our bow and arrow to shoot you down as you knock at our doors.MONSTERS
