Those restrictions again. Suffice to say most systems are procured and evaluated; greater leeway for personal preference, provided it's mission-specific etc. I could though, tell you what was happening with that pic:
1) Mai-Mai pre-dawn attack on Alpha Company base up in Nyabiondo repelled;
2) 3 troops injured and rebels melt into the jungle;
3) QRF mobilised - 1 Oryx for medevac, 1 specially equipped for command in hot pursuit;
4) The operator in this pic was the Forward Air Controller in the command Oryx tasked with tracking the rebels in the jungle and guiding the pair of Rooivalk when they joined the fight.

It is mentioned in this report.

Many many reasons. Could be a training flight, ferrying, or they not need for the mission.

Although I think it's a good idea, we need to first rethink our PMF and counter-terror units to proper tactical units. PMF's /anti-terror units must be withdrawn from VIP's/VVIP's and replaced with CPU only.

Redesign and re-equip PMFs/CTU to proper Tactical units that can better support local police units. PMFs/CTUs shouldn't be doing the same job as normal police units.

As for trainings with the U.S, the military did not break ties with them entirely, maybe the army, but the Navy and Airforce still conduct trainings with them.

Looking beyond the hypocrisy of blocking MRAPs ,Cobra, withholding intel and passing them to us when they are useless, one has to call to question the sort of trainings the U.S provides. They aren't usually effective, or prove to be successful, there is always a deficiency with U.S military trainings.

Believe it or not countries that have received U.S trainings have been very effective in the battlefield, South-Korea, Philippines, Iraq, mali, ANA have all been sub-par.

So we didn't Sever ties with them, we only asked them to shove their hypocrisy.

NAF Choppers are always armed. They are always armed with Dual 30mm cannons or quad barrelled YAK-B.

For actual missions they carry 4 Under-wing Rocket pods or Rockets pods and dumb bombs.

I differ, we've been down this road before. Not only did we get significantly stripped down Jaguar jets, but we also lost use jets that haven't clocked 100 flying hours.

Pakistan is a proper U.S ally, yet the pakistanis got monkey mode F-16's from the U.S.

Besides there is no evidence U.S equipment is better than equipment we get from the east.

Expensive, youtube videos and Discovery channel documentaries don't mean better.

The performance of Western v Eastern equipment in Yom Kippur, Iraq 1 and 2 as well as the wars between India and Pakistan show that as a rule of thumb, western equipment is better.

I disagree.

The US victory in Iraq 1 was about preparation, planning, leadership, training and flexibility (in that order)

The Soviet SA-6 and the Sagged anti-tank missile did exceptionally well during the Yom Kippur war

Iraq 2 was just about beating a dead horse

India-Pakistan wars does nothing to bolster western equipment. Both sides use a mix. The P-15 Termit anti-ship missile did excellent work against ships in and around Karachi port during the Bangladeshi war of independence.

So which is better? NONE. It's all about the people.

Cause of economic and other reasons.

The Soviet union fell behind the west in weapons development programmes.

just look at stealth technology the west is about to field another stealthy aircraft while Russia is still struggling.

But not in all fields is the west ahead or have better systems. An example would be multiple rocket launchers.

No western MRL systems can match the Smerch and the Tornado MRLs.

Yea, the west is behind in some areas and the east is behind is others.

Regarding stealth technology. I believe it's overrated.

A slight shift in radar wavelength technology, or radar system deployment topology, and all the 100s of billions of dollars invested in stealth will be negated.

Did you know it was a Russian scientist that discovered the fundamental physics behind the type of stealth that was used in the F-117?

Also, the Su-27 airframe is the best airframe in the world, bar none.

And look how quickly the russians have caught up with them.

Stealth is over-rated. Stealth technology can't even meet up with advances in Radar technology, besides even world war 2 Radars can pick up radar cross-sections from our so called stealth planes. So how's the so called stealth plane supposed to sneak up on the "enemy" that has already seen it?

Again, pound for pound, the T-50 would out match the fuel gulping, poorly manoeuvrable F-35.

The only area a person can say the west is ahead of the russians is in unmanned tech.

The Nigerian Air Force has not yet committed the Super Pumas to the combat support role. That's why the Nigerian Army should have it's own air wing.

I agree. However, it remains to be seen whether the NAF wants it's Super-Pumas armed for more than is actually required.

Gentlemen, you misunderstand me. It's not about whether your Pumas are armed or how much. It's about 1) practicality and safety - those slings will impede egress and ingress in an emergency; and 2) fire accuracy being maximised.

Take another look at the Oryx pic. You can see the mount is not permanent and designed to utilise as little space as possible, so as not to adversely affect the Oryx's roles as troop transport and medevac.

In terms of aircraft technology Russia is still behind. The west introduced the B-2 spirit bomber, F-117 strike aircraft, F-22 and now the F-35 while the east grapples with its projects. The T-50 is still a promise.

Stealth coupled with tactics like NOE and EW systems can be a game changer, it isn't a giant leap though like jet engines.

Russia has always been trying to catch up, look at maritime systems. The Russians even tried getting western vessels. The fact that Russia isn't seen much action means they'll continue to follow western military trends.
