thank God you said "my own opinion". ..It is something everybody don't have to agree with...everybody talk from the understanding he or she has from a particular event or issue. ..If I have told you that's my opinion, then I don't see why you should believe it's wrong or bad....what you have to do is counter my opinion by giving me a concrete and valid reasons...For your information festac77 is not just an ordinary or physical playing festival you think it migh been...For me to say that, then surely I have real reason to back up my point. ...but for the guy up, he met a rock and he's getting knocked for spewing those words

So many counter reasons have been provided against your opinion but you're not addressing them.

Were there no probs in nigeria before Festac 77?

Nigeria was not d first or only country to host festac

If festac caused probs how come d plenty pastors who claim to see God everyday can't cancel them?

Why are other non-christian and non-muslim countries growing? Why shd idol worshipping prevent a country from growing? Remember Roman empire?

What of other countries that also had probs without hosting festac?

What of d high level of rituals that pastors even do now?

Why are u not properly addressing naija's problems by looking at how it started in terms of leadership and corruption. Why choose to lazily point to an unclear issue that u can't even prove?

It's no longer unusual for some pastors and christians to be heard saying Nigeria's hosting the Festival of Arts and Culture, FESTAC in 1977 marked the beginning of hardship for the country.

The festival saw masquerades, artistes, spiritual diviners, etc converging and using the mystical power in a competition in the National Theatre at Iganmu in Lagos.

How true is this?

Apart from squandering billions of dollars which could have been used to build 40 or 50 Kainji dams for electricity generation in the unnecessary celebration, FESTAC surely brought some spiritual curse to Nigeria. It is part of our legacy of waste and missed opportunity of making Nigeria a rich and prosperous country.

It makes sense to say it was a financial waste esp if there was no return

But how did it cause spiritual prob?

I initially took your reply serious but after making a search about you here, I found out it was your way of life to reply in dis manner. nevertheless I still weep for your lost soul.
Come on fuc.k off you brain dead slave to Jewish myth. Your soul is a big prison of imported ignorance and self-hatred fuelled by colonialism and its wretched, blood thirsty, criminal deity who mass murdered women and ordered the slaughter of babies. Your imported criminal, evil god needs to be hurled before the ICC and charged with crimes against humanity. He was a billion times more evil and demonic than Hitler.

In as much as I want to agree with 1/2 of what u wrote I totally beg to differ on the spiritual aspect cos this is same mentality u hear every second about colonialism.
The black generally loses direction and focus each time he fight for the baton of power.

ok. see firstly, you need to understand that anything led by a human is bound to have problems, alright? I am not a fan of any pastor, in fact I don't regard a pastor I regard and reverence God, because pastor is just an office.. so to fail is not disputable.. Some countries might not have as much as the problems we have for worshiping or holding Festac. but note and you don't need to accept though, that festac 77 hold a grip on our nation Nigeria... For me i see Nigeria as a nation like isreal who will get punished for bringing a false god to replace your first love you were made to know....i don't even know how to convince you though, but please do a research on Nigeria of before festac77 and the Nigeria of after festac77.
and also note that am not discarding the fact of and bad effect our politicians and thieves have brought to squander our economy and natural resources. but with it festac77 is still a hold on the nation. ...find out how aso rock was built and you'll be amazed on what Nigeria seat of power is laid upon.
and please name five African country that has develop beyond Nigeria except s.a

Dummy, was there a Festac when 2.5 million people were slaughtered and died of starvation and kwashiorkor in the civil war? The two leaders responsible for that carnage were christians! Won't you hold "Jesus" responsible for that? Dullard.

Nah...I'll be right here to shove truth in your dumb face. Devilish? That must be your imported god who loves the smell of burning flesh, prescribes killing for every 'infraction', and orders babies to be dashed against walls. It's all in your 'holy' book, except you are too dumb and stupi.d to read it.

FESTAC is like every other competition like world cup and olympic. Would you call it a waste if Nigeria hosts AFCON, world cup or olympic, knowing full well that it will boost the patronage of our hotels and airports?

Super thumbs up to you
I think its high time we start taking things realistically and dissuade from attaching religious sentiments into everything... And for the person that said olympic games host countries tank after the games, i dont seem to recall usa or china going down economically even if u say uk is not doing well (which is a lot better than most of the eurozone currently)

False. As a certain thread was closed down yesterday on the South African racist attacks I was alluding to the price Nigeria paid in the liberation struggle. Spare me a few moments and note the time lines.

For starters it is well known that Yakubu Gowon was the last Nigerian Head of State to be received warmly and on equal terms in Bukingham Palace.

After his ouster Nigeria under General Murtala took on the apartheid regime headlong. Nigeria became the pre-eminent voice of the international anti-apartheid movement. This pitted us in the UN and in other world capitals first against our colonial overlords Britain (strong backers of the racist regime) then the US (Britains ally).

In the process we lost the 'special relationship' Europe has with her former colonies (the kind Francophone countries enjoy and other Anglophone countries such as Ghana, the Gambia and S/Leone). We have not recovered that till date.

The late Murtala didn't care. He ramped up action, calling for boycotts of S/A and fuelling a new pan-african renaissance which led to FESTAC amongst others. Britain retaliated by dis-investing from Nigeria massively in most industries (except oil, obviously, and leading to the Lebanese and Indian influx of that period) . But this was beginning to hit our economy.

By the time Murtala was assasinated and Gowon fled to his motherland Britain (I refuse to believe they had a hand in that but...) our economy was going down. Coupled with the low oil prices an infruriated Obasanjo nationalised all oil assets and kicked out all European IOC's. The backlash was bad and our economy tanked. We were effectively isolated to the world but our African stock stood higher than ever before.

You know the west. They don't give up. The pressed and pressured for democracy as a panacea to our problems. Obasanjo caved in, Shagari stepped in and the money started flowing again.

The summary is this. If not for Murtala's pan africanism Nigeria at worst will have had a standard of living at par with middle income South Africa. We lost so much in our fight against apartheid. We sacrificed our economy and relationships with the west for Africa. We turned from their friends to their rivals and had the misfortune of playing against some of the meanest presidents and prime ministers in America and the UK at that time.

No it was not FESTAC that did us in. FESTAC was merely an expression of what grounded us. Pan-africanism. That is why OBJ remains highly respected in international circles as an african diplomatic warrior. That is how we got our honour as the giant of africa. Not by population or economy but by sacrifice and goowill. That is why he was brought back again in 1999 to get the anti-abacha foreign pro democracy sanctions off our backs. That is why he went roaming round the world trying to convince them Nigeria is back and loyal.

But see what is happening to us and other africans in S/A. That is why it hurts so much. Can they restore our lost decades of development. They bring us MTN, DSTv and Shoprite. We had better than these foreign investments prior 1976. Can they replace the lost scholarships, grants and co-operation in many fields only restored during the Shagari era. Most importantly can the South Africans restore the unending mistrust between Nigeria and the West. No.

If there was any spell cast on us it was the spell that made us look with compassion on Mandela and his co-travellers languishing hopelessly in prison and casting in our lot with the suffering people of South Africa and taking on a super-power on their behalf. These days it feels like a really bad spell.
