Hello my people. How farm and family?

Not been easy jare. We transferred the fishes to earthen pond from concrete pond. They are two months plus. Some are like melange sizes already, some are almost melange and others are pretty small jare.

They guy is careless and allow his years of experience to rub on him. Not too careful. He drained the water till the last before packing them and when I complained he said it doesn't matter and in the end I lost two during the change.

I now spend less on feeds since I buy myself.

Please what is the name of the multivitamin I need to give my smaller fishes?

Someone told me this. That you can make your concrete pond environment like a natural pond environment. Bag green leaves like vegetables and place them at the side of the pond. The fish feed on them when they begin to decompose. That this plus the feed you feed them will make them grow fast in concrete pond as in earthen pond.

Greetings to all!
I am mostly impressed by this thread and especially the SANITY in different expressions as well as freedom of speech. I stand to be corrected though, but I say these are best and most matured set of people I've seen so far on Nairaland.
I've always been into farming most times of my life but mainly crops and a bit of poultry but not into fisheries except my Brother and Father-inlaw. My interest for fish farming of recent when I visited their farms moved me to do extensive research on the risks of fish farming and the possibility of venturing into it. Hence, I stumbled on this thread and have been glued to it for the past two weeks.
You may wonder what I've been doing for the past two weeks?
I call it INDUCTION grin. You may choose to call it any other name but I called it INDUCTION because I've been reading from page one until this page 147. Loads of information tucked inside each and every page.
Having completed my INDUCTION here I think every contributors to this thread deserves a bottle each. An extra bottle for the Gurus (you know yourself) grin.
Pardon me if I don't mention specific names for now in showing appreciation. It's just based on two reasons (1.) Each and every contributors here are Unique in their own way. (2.) Your rewards can only come from God for all this good work.
I can Confidently say that I've gotten 70% of what is required to start fish farming (Which is basic info). The remaining 30% now lies with Location, Capital/Funding, Time and Consultation. Come to think of it, I have all of you as Consultant so why do I need one again? grin grin grin
I'll stop for now. I hope to visit every contributors farm within Lagos and Ibadan soonest. I will expand to other areas God's willing. So where do I start from?
Thank you all once again and stay blessed.
@Schiphol, thank God we are able to give information freely on this thread. Someday hopefully you will also advise +vely about catfishing farming. You asking were to start from?, Sharing the bottles & extras wont be a bad starting point. Cheers

Eeeeh Oga Humble007 you don corner us o

Please like Mercylicious asked, explain to us in detail the economic benefit of Formula 101 over local and imported feed.

Since you said the formula was generated to reduce the cost of fish meal in feed ingredient where 50kg of fresh fish that is sold around N6000 is equal to 50kg of fish meal that is basically made up of fish remnant that cost about N15,000.

Now let assume 50kg of fishmeal is used in formulation of a x kg, what quantity [kg] of raw fish will it required to arrive at that[x]kg

In other word kindly do a comparative analysis of fishmeal Danish/Local and Ice fish in feed formulation.

We would equally want to know the type of Fish used [Mockerel,Titus etc] and other ingredients used in the formulation of formula 101

I have been thinking of similar thing but cant come up with any idea, and information regarding such on the net has been scanty, please guru in the house over to you. We will all take this fish farming to the next level with the researching, experimenting and contributions of expert and we followers.

If this idea is ideal what sort of green leaves that will enhance growth so as not to endanger the fish with toxic leaves?

am new to fishery, but my uncle that's into it for years , gives his fishes fruits like Pawpaw, mangoes, tomatoes, waterleaf, green (spinach) , cucumber, garden egg, etc..(don't give them ugu o "pumpkin"! It's toxic ) .. And one funny part is that he doesn't give them artificial feed. Basically vegetables and dead meat! Yet his fishes grows up to 40kg... Cuz he leaves it in the water for like 2years. And another funny thing is that he hardly changes his water, most times he leaves it for like 6 months, yet his fishes doesn't die! He doesn't even sort his fishes or anything!

Whaooooo, 40kg or you mean 4kg, 40kg is almost the size of ram o.

Feeding your fish with tomatoes, waterleaf, green [spinach], cucumber, garden egg etc, seems to be an archaic way of feeding fish. We are talking of the best leaves that contain high protein and other nutrient that will enhance optimum growth within the shortest possible period to maximise profit. Rearing fish for 2years before harvest is not viable for a shrewd businessman.

Changing water after 6month is advicable when you are using earthen ponds.

All the same thank you for your input as these fruits can be applied as additional diet provided it will not purge the fish and cause pollution to the pond

I have been doing a lay man research because im neither a biologist nor agriculturist but have come across certain proteinous leaves that have been researched and serve as supplement to fish meal. And i have been able to come across two major and common leaves that can replace some percentage of fishmeal

1. Taro leaves [Cocoa yam leaves] Colocasia esculenta
2. Leucaena leucocephala leaf [Botanical name, dont know its English nor the local name

Taro leaves- Research has been conducted on this leaves as fish meal for pig with good result, and there seems to be futher research on its applicability in production of fish feed when formulated with other ingredient such Fishmeal 35&, Taro leave 20%,Soya bean 35%, Maize 35%, Premix and Salt.
Disadvantage: It is revealed that it is antinutrient which can be removed by boiling, it equally contained more fibre and lack necessary amino acid that fishmeal contain. However, whether input of premix, and other multivitamin can replace the nutrient deficiency is yet to be determined

Leucaena Leucocephala leaf- This like taro leave can also be included in the production of fish feed because of the present of 25%crude protein. it equally has similar disadvantages as present in cocoayam leaf

Submission: I believe Cocoyam leaf especially the red type is rich in protein because some tribes do eat it as form of vegetable. However, i am still at a loss on Leucaena Leucocephala tree and want any one that is familiar with it to enlighten us

duckweed is another plant being used in feeding fish especially TILAPIA but its adaptability in feeding catfish is still being investigated. moringa oleifera leaves at 10% inclusion rate had also been investigated with promising result.
