No southern will ever rule a democratic Nigeria again, but it won't be because of those empty reasons you gave. It will be because of SW behavior in the just concluded elections.

The winning formular is Sule Lamido/Peter Obi come 2019. APC stands no chance with Buhari who might be old enough that the north might not want to risk a second term with him.

Sule Lamido will split northern vote while Peter Obi goes with SE and SS vote, God willing Ekiti and Ondo will deliver from South west. Lots of votes will be expected from Lagos too.

Finally, people should stop saying o southerner will ever rule Nigeria again. God directs the affairs of Nigeria. If the times comes to break this country it will happen seamlessly too. We hope every geopolitical zone gets a fair chance to lead this country for their own 8 years with credible candidates. No zone should have a monopoly of leadership unless you want the country to break up and everyone returns home.

They know they wont be able to Win the whole North from Buhari the Plan is to divide the Northern Votes from Buhari by bringing a Stronger opposition like Shema (Governor of Katsina) then with help of South South and South East votes and some South west Votes they can actually tussle the Power out of Buhari's hand. It all depends on how Buhari performs in the next 4 years sha, the ball is in APC's court nw

If what Babatope says is really true, then am sorry for PDP. It will only present a chance for the APC to sweep the South East in a landslide. Why? Because i see APC making a promise of the presidency go the SE after Pres. Buhari which devoid of sentiments is the actual thing to be done.

So why wait for 8 yrs(in the eventuality of the Hausa PDP man winning) when you can just wait for 4 years(If Pres Buhari wins).

Common sense will tell, they better stop dreaming of a Solid presence in the South East. Just like the NC dumped them in 2015, the South East can dump them in 2019. You never can tell.

APC can't make promises of presidency to the SE, it is obvious that Tinubu and SW are scheming for the presidency come 2023. They hope the North support them like they did the North in 2015.

But come 2023, PDP will test the North and see if it's sense of gratitude to SW, is greater than its born to rule mentality and power lust. Come 2023, when the APC presents a SW presidential candidate with a Northern VP, PDP will present a Northern candidate with an Igbo Vice-president( preferably from the Igbo speaking parts of SS) .

Have you ever heard Arewa saying power must return to the hausas or fulani? All they want is for power to return to the north. After the 2nd coup they gave power to Gowon a christian from plateau, because he is a northerner and he pursued the northern agenda to the core. Don't forget that tafa balewa isn't an hausa nor fulani. A northerner is a northerner and they know it.
I have lived in the north and can categorically tell you that your assertion was only relevant in the days of Gowon; no longer applicable in the 21st century Nigeria. The North west will undoubtedly be comfortable with a Tafa Balewa from the North east but definitely not a david Mark/George Akume/Jonah Jang from the middle belt, or even a Labaran Maku from Nasarawa or Taraba. That is the north as at today!

Sure, if APC shops for a presidential candidate from the SE, they might put up a good fight, but I still remain skeptical if APC will do that. I see APC wanting to take power to SW after Buhari. Let's keep our fingers crossed and I pray God will keep me and every other Nigerian alive to see what happens in 2019.

-First and the bitter truth is this:it would be very, very difficult for a south southerner to rule Nigeria again for a very long time. These are my reasons and they are not at all based on primordial affiliations:
-Jonathan was a very bad product. He was far from the best d ss could have given us but we can only judge from what we see.He was bad not just in steering the ship of d nation but in d kind of ultra sectional politics he played.
-GEJ also ended up almost destroying,if not destroyed a once formidable party.
-In as much as he got substantial support from the se, I doubt greatly if d se would be ready to form any kind of alliance again with a ssoutherner as d arrowhead , having seen how poorly GEJ can perform and his leadership deficit.
-For the ss to ever dare to rule this nation again,it must form an alliance with other regions. We must all admit,as painful as it may sound, that GEJ rise was a product of circumstances,it would be difficult seeing any of the 3 major ethnic groups acceding to a minority tribe ruling again;@least till it has gone round the three again.
-The ss itself is not a contiguous group as many think. There are many ethnic nationalities who congregated on GEJ because he represented an aspiration to which they too might one day fulfil. It would be impossible for these other nationalities to approve of any other person from the same ethnic group as GEJ, talkless of him himself being a President again.
-Lastly GEJ staying power for d yrs he ruled and d support he got from some for his re election was due to the patronage system, the favors and largesse he could dispense as a president.Remove these from him,his almost insignificant political base is laid bare and he would hardly be a torch bearer for his own ethnic nationality, talk less a region, not to mention a conglomeration of bigger ethnic groups that form a nation.
GEJ political career,am sad to state, may end up now being limited to his tag as a "statesman".I don't see him in the national space again.

Sound reasoning. Laying it bare.

Babatope is spot on because PDP is guaranteed victory in 2019 for the following reasons:

1. Nigerians vote along ethnic and religious lines, and will still do that in 2019.

2. Given the strong hold of the PDP in south-south and south-east, they only need a fairly popular northern presidential candidate with a south-east running mate e.g Ibrahim Shekarau or Sule Lamido/Sulivan Chime or any young vibrant south-eastern technocrat, many of whom can be found in the local private sector or USA, Canada and the UK with proven track records in international organizations. This ticket will split votes in the north almost 50:50; add that to the block votes from the south-south (who will certainly reciprocate the support of the south east for GEJ) and south-east, then you know the winner. If APC tries rigging, then "adieu Nigeria".

3. Traditionally, the federal government has always been constituted by a party that is strong in the north and in the east (now split into south east and most part of south south). Don't argue, just do a little research on the strong holds of the following ruling parties since independence. (1st republic- NPC/NCNC coalition), (2nd Republic- NPN) and (4th Republic- PDP). The perpetual opposition were (1st republic- Action Group), (2nd republic-Unity Party of Nigeria) and 4th republic- 1999-2007-Alliance for Democracy{AD}, 2007-2011 Action Congress of Nigeria, {ACN}). This is what I call the default political equation of Nigeria.

4. In addition, the APC will suffer a hierarchy crisis sooner or later because it is an amalgam of parties within a party, many of whom still see the internal cleavages based on ACN vs CPC vs ANPP vs New PDP. Cries of injustice will soon fill the political atmosphere when any group feels it has been shortchanged, which you can bet has already started happening. I'm sure you know Tinubu and Akume are already slugging it out with Saraki and his own supporters. Let's not even add the Amaechi rebellion which is bound to happen sometime, somewhere along this cliffhanger to 2019.

SW has made Southern unity Impossible in a democratic setting. Any party that presents a SW presidential candidate, will lose, cos their rival will present a Northern candidate with a vice from the SS/SE zone. And any party that presents a SE/SS candidate, will lose, as the SW will team up with the North.

Every thing remaining equal, the North will rule a democratic Nigeria for ever. They will use both PDP and APC to achieve that.

Babatope has become one of the sycophants in PDP. They could not muster the courage to tell Jonathan the truth when he denied the North the benefit of the zoning formula after Yar'dua died.
Now, they are going back to the North after they have lost woefully!

Chief Babatope, be aware that your two PDP governors in SW will defect before the end of 2015 and APC and APGA will gain more supporters in your 'proud' SS and SE. . .hence, the end of PDP as a party. I wish you goodluck as you merge and change name.

The North are now the beautiful bride of the Nigerian democracy. If I were in their shoes, I will maintain the status quo, and I am sure that's exactly what they will do. They will ride both the APC and PDP to eternal presidency, in a free and fair election, that's the only possible result. The rest of the south would now have to scrap for the crumbs off the Northern table ie the glorified VP position, thanks to the Jagaban of Borgu, the phantom sophisticated political strategist. *grins*

A member, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has said that President Goodluck Jonathan will not run for the presidency in 2019.

He explained that the party would shop for a strong Hausa/Fulani candidate to run against the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, in 2019.

Babatope, who is also a member of the party’s elders’ caucus, spoke with our correspondent on Victoria Island, on Wednesday.

He described the outgoing President as a leader, who had done his best in uplifting the nation’s democracy, adding that Nigeria would forever remember Jonathan as a committed leader who kept the nation as one despite several challenges.

He said he was sure that the President would not seek to contest the 2019 presidential election although “the people of the South-South have the right to present a candidate for the election, I’m sure the President will not contest; He will lead us to against the All Progressives Congress.”

He said, “The President has set himself apart as a great Nigerian leader, who is committed to seeing Nigeria blossom into a great democracy. He has laid a solid foundation for the nation’s democracy and he would forever be remembered.”

“The President will not contest the 2019 presidential election. The PDP will look for a strong Hausa/Fulani presidential candidate to contest against Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

“We have a strong presence in the South-South, South-East and we have two governors in the South-West. We are going to slug it out together in the North in 2019. We are going to flush out the APC in 2019 because we are going to correct our mistakes and take back the central government.”

The former Minister of Transport said PDP’s National Executive Council, the BoT and Elders’ Caucus would meet soon in Abuja to assess the outcome of the general elections.

He said, “We are going to restructure our party. The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, will convene a meeting in two weeks’ time when we will objectively discuss the last elections.

“Apart from the grand conspiracy against our party by the powers that be in the elections, we are going to tackle the problem of imposition, which was a great area of mistake on our side. Crises were recorded across the states over imposition. We are going to guard against this. The APC will, naturally, make its own mistakes and we will capitalise on these.

“It is given in politics that mistakes would occur among the ruling party. We will all see when this begins to happen. We are watching and waiting.”

Imagine....... This ppl r actually adding more fuel to the fire!!! I believe by 2019 or so, the Igbos might be looking up to the Presidential seat wic they bliv would be their turn to once again rule after the demise of Nnamdi Azikwe . But all of a sudden, you want to slot a hausa/fulani guy!!! This truly is, frying pan to fire. May be Namadi Sambo/Fayose would then, be their presidential aspirants. Moreover, pdp are still in power and why the worry about 2019!!!!

Rubbish
Dey should not plan right
They should be planning on how to rebuild, rebrand and reenergize the party before the elections. Not who and why wo will run for this or that position. The strategy should be on how to ensure that pdp doesn't die. Saying that pdp will field a hausa man can only go a long way to kill the morale of some people in the party, people who are there for their regional interest. What do you expect the PDP members who believe northerners are playing born to rule to do about this development knowing fully well that after Buhari, a northerner will still take over?
PDP is not planning to change for the better. They still want to continue imposing candidates. Make Dem continue. Apc will just keep cruising.

The plan to get a hausa-fulani by PDP to succeed buhari in 2019 is dead on arrival. Babatope, let me lend you my wisdom. Get a northerner of middle-belt (i.e. north central) or north east extraction , preferably from Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Taraba or even Adamawa. That is the best way to split the bloc votes of the north; you can be sure that s/south and s/east will most likely vote for the PDP particularly if the candidate is from Plateau or Benue. And I don't see the Yorubas romancing with Buhari's APC for long, the moment he starts acting Arewa's agenda and takes Tinubu and OBJ's hands off the plate, and renders their errand boy (Osinbajo) jobless in Aso rock.
The moment u people start to believe that North central are also together with rest of norths the better for you. Look, people of north are now wiser, either christian or muslims, either north central or north west or north east because we later realize that PDP wanted to use religion sentiment to divide Us and thank GOD we survive it. Remember we were one before PDP came with their evil mind. I can authoritatively tell u that GMB won, places like Nasarawa, and Taraba but were manipulated by the PDP governors. Cheers.
