A member, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has said that President Goodluck Jonathan will not run for the presidency in 2019.

He explained that the party would shop for a strong Hausa/Fulani candidate to run against the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, in 2019.

Babatope, who is also a member of the party’s elders’ caucus, spoke with our correspondent on Victoria Island, on Wednesday.

He described the outgoing President as a leader, who had done his best in uplifting the nation’s democracy, adding that Nigeria would forever remember Jonathan as a committed leader who kept the nation as one despite several challenges.

He said he was sure that the President would not seek to contest the 2019 presidential election although “the people of the South-South have the right to present a candidate for the election, I’m sure the President will not contest; He will lead us to against the All Progressives Congress.”

He said, “The President has set himself apart as a great Nigerian leader, who is committed to seeing Nigeria blossom into a great democracy. He has laid a solid foundation for the nation’s democracy and he would forever be remembered.”

“The President will not contest the 2019 presidential election. The PDP will look for a strong Hausa/Fulani presidential candidate to contest against Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

“We have a strong presence in the South-South, South-East and we have two governors in the South-West. We are going to slug it out together in the North in 2019. We are going to flush out the APC in 2019 because we are going to correct our mistakes and take back the central government.”

The former Minister of Transport said PDP’s National Executive Council, the BoT and Elders’ Caucus would meet soon in Abuja to assess the outcome of the general elections.

He said, “We are going to restructure our party. The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, will convene a meeting in two weeks’ time when we will objectively discuss the last elections.

“Apart from the grand conspiracy against our party by the powers that be in the elections, we are going to tackle the problem of imposition, which was a great area of mistake on our side. Crises were recorded across the states over imposition. We are going to guard against this. The APC will, naturally, make its own mistakes and we will capitalise on these.

“It is given in politics that mistakes would occur among the ruling party. We will all see when this begins to happen. We are watching and waiting.”

GEJ is a lucky accidental politician who good luck pushed into power. He does not have what it takes to win PDP primary now that power of incumbency is removed.

Things might changed
Then if things change and PDP wins, it would be a confirmation that the SE is just confused. The SE hates Buhari purely because he is a northerner trying to grab power, but the same SE will now align and vote another northerner just to punish Buhari?.... What an anomaly!

Excessive sentiments lead to irrational thinking and actions.

LordTudor:
Babatope is spot on because PDP is guaranteed victory in 2019 for the following reasons:

1. Nigerians vote along ethnic and religious lines, and will still do that in 2019.

2. Given the strong hold of the PDP in south-south and south-east, they only need a fairly popular northern presidential candidate with a south-east running mate e.g Ibrahim Shekarau or Sule Lamido/Sulivan Chime or any young vibrant south-eastern technocrat, many of whom can be found in the local private sector or USA, Canada and the UK with proven track records in international organizations. This ticket will split votes in the north almost 50:50; add that to the block votes from the south-south (who will certainly reciprocate the support of the south east for GEJ) and south-east, then you know the winner. If APC tries rigging, then "adieu Nigeria".

3. Traditionally, the federal government has always been constituted by a party that is strong in the north and in the east (now split into south east and most part of south south). Don't argue, just do a little research on the strong holds of the following ruling parties since independence. (1st republic- NPC/NCNC coalition), (2nd Republic- NPN) and (4th Republic- PDP). The perpetual opposition were (1st republic- Action Group), (2nd republic-Unity Party of Nigeria) and 4th republic- 1999-2007-Alliance for Democracy{AD}, 2007-2011 Action Congress of Nigeria, {ACN}). This is what I call the default political equation of Nigeria.

4. In addition, the APC will suffer a hierarchy crisis sooner or later because it is an amalgam of parties within a party, many of whom still see the internal cleavages based on ACN vs CPC vs ANPP vs New PDP. Cries of injustice will soon fill the political atmosphere when any group feels it has been shortchanged, which you can bet has already started happening. I'm sure you know Tinubu and Akume are already slugging it out with Saraki and his own supporters. Let's not even add the Amaechi rebellion which is bound to happen sometime, somewhere along this cliffhanger to 2019.

You are JK right?. The only thing that can give shekarau or Lamido a slight chance is the death of GMB. If not, those two guys cannot pull anything off. See their performances at the polls in their state. APC just need to perform very well in one sector and that is it.

This is a politically dümb move that will fail.

PDP's best move is to capitalize on the hunger of the southwest to produce a president, choosing a Fulani/Hausa will still not help them garner the votes from the south west, not even with a vice presidential aspirant from the south west.

And how come he thinks they still have the SE in the bag? With a would be Fulani aspirant?

The SE will drift back to APGA.

-Jonathan was a very bad product. He was far from the best d ss could have given us but we can only judge from what we see.He was bad not just in steering the ship of d nation but in d kind of ultra sectional politics he played.
-GEJ also ended up almost destroying,if not destroyed a once formidable party.
-In as much as he got substantial support from the se, I doubt greatly if d se would be ready to form any kind of alliance again with a ssoutherner as d arrowhead , having seen how poorly GEJ can perform and his leadership deficit.
-For the ss to ever dare to rule this nation again,it must form an alliance with other regions. We must all admit,as painful as it may sound, that GEJ rise was a product of circumstances,it would be difficult seeing any of the 3 major ethnic groups acceding to a minority tribe ruling again;@least till it has gone round the three again.
-The ss itself is not a contiguous group as many think. There are many ethnic nationalities who congregated on GEJ because he represented an aspiration to which they too might one day fulfil. It would be impossible for these other nationalities to approve of any other person from the same ethnic group as GEJ, talkless of him himself being a President again.
-Lastly GEJ staying power for d yrs he ruled and d support he got from some for his re election was due to the patronage system, the favors and largesse he could dispense as a president.Remove these from him,his almost insignificant political base is laid bare and he would hardly be a torch bearer for his own ethnic nationality, talk less a region, not to mention a conglomeration of bigger ethnic groups that form a nation.
GEJ political career,am sad to state, may end up now being limited to his tag as a "statesman".I don't see him in the national space again.
Oga before the ss man became president we have had presidents from the north and sw for almost 50 years with nothing to show for it. No roads, no light, no health care etc but of cos it's normal. But a ss man rules the country for 5 years and you are giving this analysis. Well who cares.

SW has made Southern unity Impossible in a democratic setting. Any party that presents a SW presidential candidate, will lose, cos their rival will present a Northern candidate with a vice from the SS/SE zone. And any party that presents a SE/SS candidate, will lose, as the SW will team up with the North.

Every thing remaining equal, the North will rule a democratic Nigeria for ever. They will use both PDP and APC to achieve that.

This is the bitter truth

Would APC have made an Igbo president in the 8yrs if it had gotten massive Igbo vote? NOPE. Cos Buhari will be there for at least 4 years, they Osibanjo might take over and stay for 8 years. So Igbos were promised presidency when they voted OBJ and Yar'dua?
