HopeAtHand: Even if I get you a snap shot of it, will it change anything? Will it stop your Igbophobia. You are desperately trying so hard to derail this thread and turn it into an Ikwerre identity denial thread, like Nairaland doesn't already have enough of such threads. Here is what your ancestors had to say about your ethnicity and even the colonial masters http://www.elombah.com/index.php/special-reports/16602-ikwerre-is-igbo 4 Likes 1 Share |

On the topic: It is going to be extremely difficult to enumerate all the 'dialects' spoken in the Igbo area. First of all, one has to decide what constitutes a dialect. No two communities in the Igbo area speak exactly the same. Even within the sub-ethnicities (Nkanu, Agbaja, Ndoki, Ngwa, etc) there are differences from one village-group to another. If these differences are taken to define what a dialect should be, then there may be as many dialects as there are communities in Igboland. 3 Likes |

pazienza: I dnt need you to tell me what my ancestors passed down my lineage. Theres absolutely no Igbophobia anywhere. All we want is fot the Igbos to learn to respect the collective will of a people and the constitution of Nigeria which recognises same. It is really disheartening to see Igbos so willfully turn truth on its head and deceive Nigerians with such falsehood as Ikwerres being Igbos. It is a unacceptable and is clearly a total show of shame. |

Cheks01: Udi is also Waawa. In fact, all communities in Enugu State that say 'wa' for 'mba' ('no') are tagged Waawa. Sometimes the Waawa tag is also extended to Awka people in Anambra (who also say 'wa'), but they reject the term vehemently and actually consider it derogatory. |

sonnie10: It is good to understand. It means igbos in Sierra Leone. I know u wud ask how come? Igbos again. They are d slaves taken to USA. After slavery was abolished, they were taking to Sierra Leone but the slaves decided to remain there and not return but still kept their original identity. I had a class mate back then and he confirmed it. For the records even a part of Congo speaks igbo. Had a neighbour who told me this on hearing my name. Though the spelling was different. But he told me there were people who spoke igbo language in his country. 1 Like |

HopeAtHand: Your ancestors told the colonials they were "Ibos" as early as 1920s but you will have us believe that you are no longer "ibos" from 1970. You would have all recorded history destroyed and rendered void. You will make up ridiculous stories of your original name being Iwhuruohna and that Ndiigbo were the ones who caused your name to become Ikwerre because according to your fabricated stories, the Igbo interpreter was asking the Ikwerres if they agreed to the terms and conditions of the white men, upon which they said "Ekwerellam" and from hence forth you lots became known as Ikwerre. You fabricate stories of Bini migration. You lots are a disgrace. I only engage in Ikwerre arguments these days because of proud Igbo men amongst you lots like Uche Okwukwu. 7 Likes |

Very few people know about this group but there are actually an Igbo group in Limbe, Cameroon. A friend of mine is actually from that area. He was the first Igbo boy I met that told me he was from Cameroon, till date I envy the sh1t out of those people. They are lucky not be in Nigeria. Anyway, according to him his people are Igbo group in Cameroon but sadly, alot of their culture have intermixed with the Bamouns of Cameroon so their culture is more identical to them than to Igbos in Nigeria. But they still self identify as Igbo despite losing many connections to Igbos of Nigeria. Supposedly their hometown is very close to Nigeria and that's why they still maintain their identity at least according to him. I know they equally recently joined Ohaneze. There rarely much written about them on google to be honest. I went looking for more information about them and apart from the old colonization papers on them, nothing else except pictures of their inauguration of ohaneze. I do believe their ohaneze is also different from the igbo ones in Nigeria; there's more of a kingship than anything else. I may be wrong but from the picture I saw of the inauguration it looks more of a celebration for a king. In as much as I envy those people and I wish Asaba was in their place, I honestly don't understand why they still claim Igbo since they've lost their culture, the language (trust me when my friends speaks, despite them calling it Igbo. It is not Igbo. It sound like a made up language. They corrupted the living sh1t out of that language), and even ohaneze is a king to them. They pretty much lost the identity that say Igbo so don't understand why they call themselves igbo. anyway, either way i still envy them and I ain't ashamed to say it. I seriously wish my people were lucky enough to be like them and was carved out Nigeria the last time it was carved 7 Likes 1 Share |

Why re-invent history? Look for the book, The History Of Igbos by Margaret Isichie (wriiten before the civil war)...The only Igboid group singled out for its marked difference was the Ohafia. All these you've mentioned are politically differentiated more or less! Ohafia is the most distinct in variant dialect, culture and tradition! Funny enough, it's not even in your list...Lol! This life! Radoillo: |

Op,i want to commend your efforts. We have numerous Igbo dialects and it's difficult to list them in one sitting,so i would suggest you update the list as more contributions pour in. As for the Ikwerre people, pls go and provide the list of dead or extinct ikwerre languages. I am really tired of this rubbish on nairaland. Who exactly is Igbo? As a matter of fact,we all bear our clan names before Igbo. Staying away until we go back to the topic of this thread. 1 Like |

Op I think we should make a comprehensive list that would be all inclusive. Awgu is a large sub-ethnic group in Enugu West Senatorial....our land stretching from Ituku down to Abia state in the south and ebonyi state to the east, oji river to west and nkanu in the north. In fact, the old Awgu included present day Oji river and Aninri. But I must commend your effort Op. Ya Ga Zie! |

You can deceive non-Rivers people, but you can't deceive an Okrika man! You know how we regard you Ikwerre people? Lol! Story for another day! Only an imp would dent his or her heritage for a mess of porridge or to revise history? Are you one? I hope not... Ikwerre and Ekpeye are languages whose content are almost 80% Igbo; how they became more related to Benin than Igbo beats my imagination! When as an Okrika man I tell you I'm Ijaw, you'd see sufficient evidence of that in my language and culture! Your Ikwerre culture is basically Igbo culture!! Please don't give me that lame story of marrying Igbo women and losing your language and culture! Okrikans married Igbos too (I have strong Igbo blood), but how come we didn't lose our language and culture? Stop fooling yourself! You should be ashamed of joining other Nigerians to abuse Igbos, when their blood runs in your vein! Shame on you!! Ikwerreboy: 13 Likes 6 Shares |

ideykwum: It is Elizabeth Isichei. And I have read her books. And no where did she claim Ohafia as the most divergent dialect. Secondly, the list is NOT my list. This is the current linguistic classification of the lects spoken in the Igbo area. Repeat: It is NOT my list. As a matter of fact, I actually disagree with the lumping together of all the Southeastern lects (save for Ezza-Izi-Ikwo-Mgbo) as one 'language' called Igbo Proper, while recognising the distinctiveness of the other lects. I feel if the same criteria are used, Igbo Proper could be further broken up into over a dozen 'languages'. |
