The Yoruba translation of the word "gbam" is "gan" but there's a place in Ogoni known as "Nonwa Gbam". It could be of Ogoni origin. The Igbo translation is "kponkwem". 1 Like |

Just like Isee!, Gbam! is of 100% Igbo origin used to concur and buttress a point. But it's now loaned out. Pls, let's not loan out our Isee! before Yoruba people like Tpia and Ileke will drag words we inherited from our fore-father's with us 5 Likes |

I'm not sure that the word Ase/Ise would originate from any one modern ethnic group. These groups (Yoruba, Edo, Igbo) are supposedly part of the same larger language family. |
Re: Gbam! - Who Invented It? by tpia5: 11:04am On Jan 21, 2012 |
in yoruba, the "A" in ase means "it", while "se" means "happen. so, ase means it will happen. Ase isnt a morpheme ie it isnt an indivisible unit, but consists of two phonemes joined together to produce a meaning. thus, it can be broken down. dont know about Ise but that's the explanation for Ase. 1 Like |

Amazing how people attempt to claim words that don't belong to their ethnic group. I don't know for sure if "Gbam" is an igbo word but by elimination: 1. It can't be a yoruba word as in all my years of studying yoruba in secondary school and associating with yorubas, I have never heard words that end with hard consonants. "n", is the only one that features at the end of words and is usually preceded by an "a" , "i" or a "u" as in "gan", "Akin" and "marun", never an "m". Correct me if i'm wrong. If the word/ sentence in question was "Gba mi" it would indisputably have been yoruba. 2. If there is a "Gb" diphthong in the hausa language, I have never heard it. 3. Several Efik/ Ibibio words end with consonants, "m" inclusive. However, I have never heard a "Gb" diphthong in these dialects. 4. Igbo is the only of the four main languages that features both a "Gb" diphthong and words/ sentences ending with "m" which usually denotes ownership. It is possible that it is from a minority language or it means absolutely nothing but it is definitely not a yoruba word. 4 Likes |

Na wa o! Will money or anything be given to the tribe gbam originated from? Gbam generally in Yoruba is used to describe the collision between two or more things. Of the truth, Gbam has never in any way be used to show support or affirmation in Yoruba. So if we are talking about the context in which everybody is using it today, I don't think I would be wrong to credit that to the Igbos. Albeit, one can not really tell where the word GBAM actually originated from. I don't know what the fuss is all about? |
Re: Gbam! - Who Invented It? by bigfrancis21: 2:47pm On Apr 24, 2015 |
Beamborla: In the sense of 'confirmation', it is an Igbo word used commonly amongst Igbos to mean 'I concur', 'I agree', etc. Nollywood actors and actresses of Igbo origin use it in the English speaking movies, which has spread from there to all of Nigeria. Watch a gathering of elders in any nollywood movie, and notice them shout 'gbam' to concur with their colleague's views or suggestions. That's the 'gbam' being referred to here. Gbam is also the perceived sound heard when one slams the door. It is not unique to any tribe as it is a general sound heard when the door is closed. It is pathetic for a tribe to claim ownership of a mere sound made by nature. However, the meaning being discussed here is the one which refers to 'I concur', which originated from Igbo by way of nollywood movies and have spread all over Nigeria. 5 Likes |
