agaugust: Just because it shot three or four jets does not make it effective. It has more disadvantages than advantages in 21st century. The strongest point of Roland is when it is used during the day. When the gunner will only have to shut down the radar and instead use optical tracking system to manually track down the aircraft which they know its route and wait for its approach. However, such operation at night will prove very difficult since human eye view is only limited for day light and as well as the sights of Roland can only see during the day. |

Patchesagain: Link-ZA is not a radar it's datalink, where does it get information ? Do you have anything like Nigerian ATR-42 ELINT Surveyor with 330 km radar range to search the ground ? . |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by andrewza: 4:42pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: It fired 8 missiles no mention of number of targets. SAAF actually trains against radars. You know high end ones unlike yours. Look at the Falklands war and see what had more kills. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 4:44pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: First, your ATR-42 does not have 330km radar. As has been shown before. Second, yes its called the Gripen. NATO's favorit recon platform. Third, Umbani can be preprogrammed to hit GPS co-ords. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 4:46pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: All it says is 8 missiles were fired. only 3 hit. 37% hit rate. These are the facts. Pretend Mercenary. |

Patchesagain: How does a Gripen identify a Roland when there are other tracked vehicles, T-72, MT-LB, Scorpion, Shilka AAA....at 6 km above sea level, your pilot sees nothing on ground due to distance and cloud cover....at 40 km stand-off range radar is picking all vehicles that look like tanks from city to city over a long distance....confusion....cannot identify a Roland among the whole lot.....GPS is useless, the Roland is a vehcile and is mobile....can change position randomly.....laser designator is useless because your soldier cannot enter Nigerian base or territory as infantry will slaughter h.im. You see why air to ground attack jet pilots are forced to take risk and enter range of enemy air defences, NAF faced that challenge against Boko Haram....only ATR-42 Surveyor was able to solve most problems of target identification and yet it had to fly within SAM range, but only AAA was a threat. I am just education you South Africans about how difficult air to ground attack war can be, and how useless very long range weapons can be in a war....100 km range bomb looking for target in a distant city....waste of time when you face an enemy like Nigeria. Patchesagain: History says one Harrier jet was in the air and dropped two bombs. SANDF fights NO WAR, so you guys don't know how real war is fought. The Roland operator was well trained, jet in the air and two bombs, if you fire 3 missiles and the pilot deploys chaff and flares, it can waste all 3 missiles. the Roland man fired 8 missiles to guarantee victory over any false targets released as ECM or chaff by the enemy jet pilot. South Africa has NOTHING like a Roland system so you will never know standard air defence tactics unless Nigerians teach you. Roland fired 8 missiles and destroyed ALL TARGETS AVAILABLE IN THE AIR.....100% kill rate....perfect . 1 Like |

agaugust: The gripen radar can even count cars on the road from 70km away. It will definitely see Roland from 120km away. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS-05/A |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 5:06pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust:Your grandpa Roland 2 has two radars. The target acquisition or search radar: The Thompson-CSF D-band pulse doppler radar. And the tracking or fire control radar control: Thompson-CSF J-band monopulse doppler radar. The latter can only track one target and two missiles. SAAF retired them eons ago. Come jungle dweller let's dance |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 5:07pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
FighterPilot: Error 1... Gripen radar in ground operation mode for scan is 75 km and tracking is about 50 km. Error 2.... Gripen radar will detect ALL vehicles on the 50 km road or space and will NEVER differentiate a Roland from other vehicles, radars show you dots and beep, ONLY a Tv camera can show you the what is a car or a bus. I think we should leave this Roland issue alone before you Southies commit s.uicide today o ! . |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by andrewza: 5:09pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: How do you know it was fired at only 3 targets. The harrier lost was solo and on a recce. 4 hairers where shot down one knocked out of action. 1 GDF got 3 kills and knocked out 1 Roland shot down one aircraft and shot 2 bombs from countless dropped. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 5:10pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: You and your lies again. SAAF gripen use the latest radar system of gripen Jas 39 and you can clearly see that they say it can count ships from 70km away with an earlier version of radar. However, even at 50 it will see Roland and the hawk will automatically see the target since their data are linked and will send umbani and take it off. Alternatively, gripen attack with EW and flush Roland with free falling bombs. Gripen radar can differentiate between ships, SAM and other systems. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 5:15pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust:Shared information. What a Gripen can see others will see. Maritime search radar. Nothing scary or special. The radar on the SAAF Super Lynx helicopters has a range of 350km+. |

agaugust: vehicle is a Thomson-CSF pulse Doppler radar http://www.saairforce.co.za/the-airforce/weapons/70/cactus-crotale-sam http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotale_(missile) In March 1988, Cuban intelligence operatives evaluated the system as deployed by the South African Defence Force during the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. They claimed it was ineffective against attack profiles of the MiG-21 and MiG-23 operated by the Angolan Air Force, criticising the design as "shoddy", "outdated", and "useless".[8] |

Patchesagain: Nigeria has ground based NAF radars with 500 km range. I posted that few months ago from SIPRI....same time I posted SANDF radars that I proved were purchased in the 1980s era of old. We both have fixed land based radars to cover battle space. What do you think Nigerian TRACON means ? Nigeria has many long range ground radars including the recent acquisition of 5 units of brand new year 2010 purchased ultra-modern British Thales RSM 970 S Monopulse Mode S Secondary Radars with 500 km target detection range that are move-able by trucks to an FOB forward air base. You think only South Africa has things? Olodo . 1 Like |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 5:26pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
Agaust, the radar pulses/waves emitted by SAM system and other systems is not the same at all. The gripen avionics will tell the pilot that there is an Anti air system on the nearby and will warn him not to come any closer. All of their tracking are directed upwards. That's why modern militaries do not use radar guided SAM to larger extent anymore. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 5:29pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: So how will that help you? |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 5:38pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
FighterPilot: Means from 500 km range away, NAF will detect all Gripen and Hawk jets with our Thales RSM 970 S Monopulse Mode S Secondary Radars, then F-7 jets and Alpha jets will be intercepting SAAF at 200 km away even before you can dream of dropping any Umbani bomb. I have told you guys that fighting a country like Nigeria that has 60 jet fighters, is different from fighting Lesotho and Swaziland. You won't even get a chance to face Nigerian army Roland.....NAF will meet your jets air to air before you approach Nigerian air space, our new THALES Radars will be seeing the inside of your own air space as soon as your jets take off from ground. What do you think Nigeria is? Burundi republic? . 1 Like |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 5:50pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
agaugust: Hahahahaha!!! I thought you could have mentioned anything of the fourth generation fighters. Your F7 will miss their way since their radar can track up to 50 kms. They cannot even challenge gripens on a dog fight. At more than 70 Km your SAM is already exposed and attacked with EW system. The hawks have already discharged the umbanis. At night umbani does not glitter, it is a smooth operator that will take out all your Rolands. You only have 60 useless aircrafts. |

MikeCZAR: Sure, we are dancing below....Andrewza tried to rescue you and I will make him share your humble pie as I force-feed you both andrewza: Thank you for proving that Cuba captured South African air defence missile syatem and called it useless It's Crotale or Cactus SAM used by SADF nad it is useless, well Nigeris does NOT use Cactus SAM....we use Roland. Sorry about y.our bad luck. The Cactus in SADF was Thompson CFS radar ordered in 1964 ancient times....useless. The Roland uses Siemens-Thompson CFS D and J radars of 1978.....not 1964 Thompson, notice the Siemens name and the D & J variant codes on the Roland radar. You see why I call you a navy cook? You cannot even differentiate between old and modern radar versions that are 14 years different in tech. . |
