I had once had a surgery in the 80s to remove a growth in my hand. I saw the whole work being done on my hand wide awake! If you see the way their curved needles were entering and coming out of my hand...no be small thing.

Re: He Was Asked To Hold Torchlight While Surgeons Continue Operating His Body by Nobody: 11:00am On Apr 28, 2015
The op is just making a mountain out of a mole hill. Firstly
. The surgery was carried out with the use of a generator set which later went bad... Secondly there was no light and the only other means possible was to use the theatre bed light which also dimmed off
. Someone later got a touch and tried providing illumination but from the vantage point of the surgeon. The light couldn't get right where it was needed.. So the patient was asked to hold the touch so they could finish up

. This is wrong but possible. The fact that the patient was discharged in less than 2 hours after surgery goes to show that the procedure was a very minor one. Mind you the surgery lasted for less than an hour. 8:30 to 9:30

There have been cases where a surgeon needed a procedure to safe his life... But the issue was he was the only person capable of carrying out the procedure around his locality.. So he stayed awake all thru out the surgery and led his team of surgeon to carry out the surgery on himself

The problem here is power.. And maybe a little but sub par medical practice.

It is not a joke.

1.I have been present in a MAJOR teaching hospital in this country where operations were conducted by the light of a rechargeable lantern.

2.If the patient had an epidural/spinal anesthesia....he could have held the torch for the doctor in the way he described.

wow really? Never noticed dat

Now some people will blame Buhari or Jonathan for this.

We need to get it right in this country we need to standardize everything. there should be a written down standards on how things should be done
1. before a hospital is approved they must have at least 2 backup Gen

This is one reason why US and other western countries will keep flourishing . There is a standard for everything
it is called 'Backup' and not 'Main' because it is assumed that NEPA/PHCN/watever will provide the main power supply. But when they fail to do that then the backups fails due to over using...
In summary let everybody play their part then the system will fall into place.

For ceasarian,it is either regional,or mild GA wt sedatives.
It is never local.

Oh please its not every operation that requires one to be completely sedated. Pray you don't fall sick. And to the ignorant people liking your post, I'll advice them to grab some books and read more

lol, Ever heard of administering anesthesia on only the part of the body that needs surgery . Don't say this to someone that knows you

Shut up!! Can you and all the other ignoramuses on this thread shut the fuc*k up!! I get tired of seeing simpletons on this forum propagate ignorance.

Except it was just a superficial or non-invasive surgery on the chest, it is safe to assume that it was a heart or lung surgery. In that case, it is a major procedure which requires the patient be generally anaesthetised and intubated.

However, It is possible to perform major surgeries while the patient retains some level of consciousness. Typically, the patient will have to be heavily sedated to a point where they're just on the edge of consciousness... They can respond to basic commands, but nothing on the scale of holding a torch light into one's own chest while surgery is performed (are you insane?)

This is complex procedure which requires a higher degree of sophistication, one a hospital which can't provide steady electricity, most certainly don't have.
