Good day Nairalanders, pls I just met an Igbo lady from Awka who is a lawyer like me. I love the idea of inter-tribal marriage and would possibly like to marry this this lady. So, I would like to know if I, as a Yoruba guy can marry the said lady from Awka and the requirements for marrying ladies from that area, if they at all they allow Inter-tribal marriage. Thanks. |

It depends on the family she's from.. Bt normally, marring an igbo girl is quiet expensive. U have to be ready! I mean financially ready |

I am a Yoruba guy like you but seriously you embarrass me! Didn't you go to university? If you start dating her and you end up in a relationship with her (if she likes you), she is the one that would convince her people to accept you... for goodness sake we are talking about a lawyer just like yourself... she knows how to think for herself, she is not an Igbo fish seller. Depending on her village in awka, most of the villages in Awka and indeed Anambra marital rites are high. It's a compulsory to have a traditional marriage and of course perform the dowry rites which is a bit on the high side too. The least budget for the entire process should be nothing less than a million naira. It's likely to cost more though. You shouldn't bother whether marrying Igbo is right or wrong. The concern should be about the person you intend to marry not the tribe. And Anambra people are very welcoming and accommodating so no worries. Dechandel could have through more light on this but the only issue is that she hasn't been to her hometown for more than a decade. 2 Likes 1 Share |

LegalIcon:bros I am from enugu, but I have an awka in-law. When I went there for a project,my guy marriad an awka lady. I personally accompanied him to do his traditional marriage. I was surprise when they brought burndle of broom sticks and selected 20 out of all,and asked him to select hw many he is ready to pay. Each broom stick is worth N1,000. According to them,my guy was ashamed to pick any out of the 20 sticks,he even offered to pay 200,000 but her dad refuse to collect. He ended up paying 40k for the dowry. Reason being that. They are not selling their daughter and the parent of the gal can easily refund the money.whenever the inlaw mess up. I later made inquiry and was told that. it is their tradition. Thats why it doesn't take an awka lady a thing to dump her hobby sorry ass,wen he missbehaves. Where you will spend money is the traditional marriage, which depends on how you want it to be. The only part of igbo, that has high marraig cost is IMO 7 Likes 1 Share |

Justfollowit: Yes. And a million naira is me putting it mildly. Most Igbo towns traditional weddings and even the dowry rites are expensive and not for everyone. I'm not yet married by choice but by the circumstance my people have conditioned me to. At my age I should have a son in college. |

dechandel: I have two in-laws from Awka, one in Amawbia and the other in Nibo. I escorted my brothers when they went for dowry and the trad wedding. Neither of them spent less than 2mil. It's not limited to Awka though, it's same for my village too. That's why I said it depends on the village she's from. Some villages trad wedding is a must, they don't collect dowry until the trad day. This was the case in Nibo for instance. Go visit your uncles and cousins jor. They may have forgotten you since they last saw you when you were a kid. |

Marrying from akwa ibom is not d same as u view marrying from igboland. To marry an akwa ibom is more like marrying a yoruba girl in a NORMAL way. If u really want to marry her, just show her and the family the love that express ur intention to be part of that family. And if d lady also love u and trust u not to go for second wife tomorrow, then u are already on ur way to becoming an in law to akwa ibomites. |

Justfollowit: Sure it is. We pay more attention to the wedding than the marriage and how to sustain it. I know people who took loans just to fund their wedding and later started having difficulties paying up with interest and running their home. Although the requirements are too many and expensive a lot of people spend much extra for show off. Even those who are still struggling in their businesses and source of livelihood. |

ronald4lif: Yeah, I think it should be kept to the basics. Setting up my unborn children's trust funds and climbing up the property ladder are much more important to me than having a wedding |

shaboti:Guy u don enter one chance. U need to be competing with Dangote in dollars before u attempt such move. But on a serious note, If not dat i dont believe in impossibility, i would have advice u forget it. Reason being that aside the fact that marriage is very expensive, particularly in that part of Igbo land, their ladies RARELY marry non Igbos. In fact, my experience reveal that among all d igbo speaking states, Anambra has the lowest figure of their ladies getting marry to other igbo state, talk more of getting marry to non Igbo. |
