Depending on her village in awka, most of the villages in Awka and indeed Anambra marital rites are high. It's a compulsory to have a traditional marriage and of course perform the dowry rites which is a bit on the high side too.

The least budget for the entire process should be nothing less than a million naira. It's likely to cost more though.

You shouldn't bother whether marrying Igbo is right or wrong. The concern should be about the person you intend to marry not the tribe. And Anambra people are very welcoming and accommodating so no worries.

Dechandel could have through more light on this but the only issue is that she hasn't been to her hometown for more than a decade. tongue
You are 100% right about Anambra people. they are very straight

Traditional marriage, a million naira in Anambra state? Where do you guys pull out such lies from, with relative ease?

So the poor people including carpenters and bricklayers marrying Anambra ladies in Anambra state are millionaires? Or are there no married poor people in Anambra? undecided

Marrying from akwa ibom is not d same as u view marrying from igboland. To marry an akwa ibom is more like marrying a yoruba girl in a NORMAL way. If u really want to marry her, just show her and the family the love that express ur intention to be part of that family. And if d lady also love u and trust u not to go for second wife tomorrow, then u are already on ur way to becoming an in law to akwa ibomites.

Yes. And a million naira is me putting it mildly.

Most Igbo towns traditional weddings and even the dowry rites are expensive and not for everyone.

I'm not yet married by choice but by the circumstance my people have conditioned me to. At my age I should have a son in college. cheesy
i disagree with you. bride price ranges from 50000 - 120000k. the party is how u want it to be.

Bro, you may not agree but a traditional wedding in most villages is that expensive. Not just in Anambra but in Igbo States. Most of the poor like carpenters you're talking about just perform the dowry rites not a trad wedding. By the time some of these in-laws gives you the cartons of beer, goats etc. And by the time you buy groceries, canopies, wrappers for in-laws, DJs, and transporting your people to and fro to her hometown 1mil will be nothing. There is so much involve in a trad wedding that meet the eye.

You are wrong on this one, Bro. Poor people in Igbo land marry without the most recognized of the two wedding - traditional marriage? Are you really an Igbo boy? Don't you know couples can do only traditional marriage to be certified as couples. The white wedding is just jara.
You are misunderstanding wasteful traditional marriage with economized traditional marriage.

Last month i went to a traditional marriage of my friend's sister at Ekwulobia in Anambra. Their family charged the son-in-law, #20K for bride price. The rest of the yam, palm wine, schinapps and alcohol etc., associated with paying of bride price was 28K, totaling 48K. Now the important ceremony is done. How you plan the main traditional marriage is up to your pocket. Let's say P-Square were the one marrying the girl, after paying the 48K, they will spend up to 15 million because they're rich and will invite other stars, lodge them, pay the best MCs, etc. But a normal guy will call few friends, call the local villa MC and economize his spending. The required money in this scenario is just the 48K!!

I'm 100% Igbo and Ekwulobia is 5mins away from my hometown. From what you narrated it's appears what you attended was Igba-nkwu ime uno. I think it translate to something like an indoor traditional wedding. This is usually a small trad wedding that it's targeted for the kindred of the bride and some selected friends. It's different from the proper traditional marriage setting.

In a proper traditional marriage setting there will be asoebis, with different attires who comes out with the bride at different stages. Women of the bride family, including her uku nne (mom side) are called up to be given wrappers/ankala. There's a time when the couple come out to dance and all and money spraying. The food that will be prepared is large enough to go round the village. This type of wedding is the most common trad wedding and I'm still of the opinion that 1mil is not too much to fund this type of wedding.

Many villages in Anambra don't accept the type of wedding you are likely talking about. They insist on the proper wedding that can accommodate the village and not just families and immediate kindred of the bride. This was the case in Amawbia Awka and in my hometown Oko. I have heard of similar cases in Imo too but I'm not sure.
