So many comments, unfortunately the great Mandela in his book"long walk to freedom"mention Nigeria only ones and that was when Obasanjo came as a delegate from the OAU.The way Nigeria talks about helping SA keep bafling me.May be our leaders just decieved us into believing they actually sent more fund than Zambia,Rhodesia(zimbabwe),Tanzania,Angola etc.

That means the money Nigeria claims to have paid, never reached ANC, it was probably looted.

Absolutely agree with you. I don't understand why majority of these posters are getting overly emotional about this stuff. I presume that plaque wasn't made yesterday and surely pre-dates any of the recent diplomatic spats we've had with that country. So it is unlikely they expunged our name when drawing up the list just to spite us given the not too jolly mood of things between the two regional powers.

Our name isn't on the list because we didn't assist them, period. I don't see what all the noise is about besides some bruised ego.
See, forget that thing ooo. Southafricans do not appeal to Nigerians any more. Why will they wake up one day and start killing "black" foreigners in their country, including Nigerians? We dey vex mood biko, and our vex is justified.

Hahahahaha do you really think this low of Nigeria? Well you must remember that this wasn't a lump sum spend in one fell swoop but spent over a period of more than 30 years of the apartheid struggle.

Nigeria's oil stake is way more than that, it was valued recently.

The Nigerian government didn't tell the Nigerian people any lie, the Nigerian people saw things for themselves, they said things that were corroborated by many black South Africans (including Mandela) if anyone told a lie at all, it's the western governments who tried and howbeit succeeded in white-washing and presenting their own contorted version of history. They've succeeded in erasing the evil role they played in the 50+ years of apartheid, and now they try to tell Africans who were on the frontline what really happened whereas they were not there.

My sources are not propaganda Nigerian websites, one isn't even a Nigerian website and besides they're narratives from people who were around at the time.. Doesn't sound like propaganda to me but lets assume it's true.

Are you seriously hinging your case on this one academic source?

1 - I'm not doubting it's credibility

2 - Ann Genova isn't really saying anything but expressing cynicism... Read it again.

I urge you to show me one academic source where the role of Nigeria is explicitly denied?

I've shown you as much evidence as I could and even shown you perhaps the most tangible evidence (which is Mandela himself speaking) but you've chucked it down to one theory or the other.

I also asked you to give me one clear reason Britain (an open supporter of apartheid) was included in the list but you haven't answered.

Which leads me to believe you've been recruited by the South African government to help in white-washing history grin grin grin which is the only logical explanation I can come up with.

- Lmao...it is actually laughable that you would think a country like Nigeria expended that much on another country. You don't even need to be a genius to know that the number is ludicrous and it doesn't add up. Let me break it down for you: Nigeria's annual budget when apartheid ended in the 90s can be more than $4 billion. And in the 80s and 70s it should be hundreds of millions in US dollars. So, you mean Nigeria basically gave out $2 billion from let's say the 70s, to when apartheid ended over a period of 30 years, no? And it actually gave more than its annual budget for expenditure on itself during the same period, for about 20 years, running in deficit/debts, while spending nothing on Nigeria, no? I'm sure you understand simple mathematics - you can do the maths to see that the figure doesn't add up. You don't need to be a genius to see that.

- So, you mean Nigeria was singled out of all the other Africa countries to be targeted by whites, on a list compiled by those who were part of the struggle, no? Why did they target only Nigeria and not the other countries? The relationship between South Africa and Zimbabwe isn't that rosy - but the country was listed there. Then if its about competition on the African continent - Egypt and Algeria are in the same league as Nigeria and South Africa. However, Algeria made almost every sector of the list, while Egypt is also listed there. Or perhaps, Nigeria just never played a vital role in the actual struggle, and that's the same reason why the country's isn't also on academic sources as well - apart from Nigerian sources? No conspiracies - post proofs.

- How are you sources not propaganda? You quoted a source that cited a ridiculous amount that Nigeria would never have been able to afford to spend on its own people during that period, even if it tried to, with all the looting/mismanagement that happened. Now imagine spending that on a movement in another country - laughable. Then the other one is a wikipedia source (lol) about lousy 300 passports without even providing the names of any notable person in the anti-apartheid struggle that was exiled in Nigeria. At least if 300 came to Nigeria, there should be a few notable names. How about name them?

- An academic source means scholarship by an academic in an higher institution of learning. I gave you a journal published by a Professor of African studies at a reputable American University. However, you're yet to return the favour - what you gave back in return was a lousy Nigerian source which quoted a ridiculous number and wikipedia. Also, the cynicism in Ann Genova's conclusion was because they gave different reasons for nationalising BP - albeit the claim about apartheid got louder due to the convenience in using that as an excuse. Obviously, you will express scepticism on what the real intent was - that's a no-brainer.

- Mandela also spoke about how Gaddafi was a big brother in the struggle when he came out, but Libya wasn't on the list as well. And he wouldn't know much because he went to prison before Gaddafi became the president of Libya. So if I were you, I'd take whatever Mandela said as just being PC for those who supported him when he came out of prison.

- I believe the UK made the list, despite how pro-apartheid the leaders were, because a lot of ANC folks were exiled in the UK and they had an office in London. Thabo Mbeki for example was exiled in the UK, and a host of others. I believe you have lived long enough in the UK to know that the UK is somewhat liberal regardless of whatever international posturing its foreign policy is operating under. And there are, and have always been tons of leftists/communists/socialists in the UK, especially in the academic class, who are proponents of preserving people's human rights anywhere on the planet. So, ANC had their support and there were anti-apartheid rallies in the UK back then. For example: in the recent case at the UN between Mauritius and the UK about Chagos Archipelago, in which Mauritius won. The country was represented by a Brit.

Lastly, you're a very funny guy. I'm just objective when it comes to issues like this one cos I actually studied African history - pre and post colonisation - with enough scholarship, before I even joined this forum. So, my knowledge about Africa is vast, though I kind of limited how I speak about it, on here. This has absolutely nothing to do with being pro-anyone...I just expected more from a country like Nigeria during that era, but it seems bad leadership and corruption denied the country the greatness it would have achieved if it had been at the forefront of a lot of things, during that turbulent era of African history. I don't take sides when it comes how things happened in the past - humanity is bigger than nationality.

u don't look at d low level of people around to advance in ur development. China didnt feel because dere is no superpower in Asia so she doesn't need to aspire for one. She rather looked into Europe and America to take giant strides. To day, who is USA to tell China to shut up. If u use Africa as a yard stick for Nigeria to grow, u will be myopic in dat respect. U are limiting urself to Africa
I got what u ar saying...buh b4 we talk abt other continent.....do u agree with me dat nigeria is giant of africa as far as africa continent is concerned?
Re: PHOTO: SA Lists States That Helped Their Apartheid Fight - Nigeria Not Listed! by Akinsnaira: 10:00pm On Apr 29, 2015
Nigeria seems not to know how diplomatic relationship with other nations work. We blowing our ego as the giant of Africa but the majority of population live below breadline, Nigeria often tries to place herself at the height above her recognition, forgetting development comes in phases. History always remembers the victor but forgets the blood, in South Africa Apartheid case Nigeria was the blood, that is the cruelty of human reasoning. The best way to fight your battle and come out with accolades is through success, or else your glory is another man's, that is why I hold the believe that racism will continue to exist even in 1000s of years to come so long one side is blossoming and the other is languishing, I always view racism in terms of economic gap between the whites and the blacks, unless that gap is bridged there will continue to be discrimination. Back to the point, history only favours the success, South Africa can never recognize the role Nigeria played during apartheid regime unless Nigeria rose to an height where they are seen as a significant neighbour to them, take for instance, USA denied Armenian genocide recently because they can't afford to go against Turkey as their key ally in Middle East - who are Armenians?, Armenians were the major christian tribe in Turkey before 1915 who were subjected to death match and mass killings (about 1.5 million people) by a muslim turkish dictator, but up till today still unable to get their nation back up to global prominence. So why would USA take stand with people from a poor nation like Armenia over a world super power like Turkey. That is the harsh reality about how world nations pursue their foreign policies. Another icing on the cake, currently Japan prime minister Mr Abe is in Washington DC to discuss how to curtail china rising prominence in Asia, one could only wonder this is the same country that was mass bombed by USA only decades ago during the world war II - tragedy of Iroshima and nagasata. Now they are forming alliance with USA to take down their Asian neighbour, China.

The conclusion of all this my epistle is that, if you're economically successful as a nation, history will forget all your wrongdoings in the past and celebrate you, and reserve the case will be if you are economically backward. So a wise country will always pursue domestic prosperity rather than foreign recognition.

Maybe that's why the Majority of South Africans don't know anything about Nigerians donating Billions to us during the Apartheid Era.

One of the Countries that went all out to help S.A is Tanzania that's why they were giving so much attention and praise on Mandelas Funeral. That's why S.A has such a strong bond with Tanzania.

Hmmm! Yet I had South African schoolmates on FG scholarship. We even marked Soweto day and I remember one of my juniors who showed us a bullet scar and told us stories of apartheid. They were always camped at FGN expense during the holidays in our Fed Govt Colleges and universities.

We were glad to be of help and stood together as a nation to fight apartheid. Mandela appreciated it anyway. The ingrates and ignorant ones can choose to rewrite history. They will reap as they sow in due season.

Nigeria has done so much for African countries. Sadly we're envied rather than being appreciated. May God guide us to look inwards and make our country great again.
Amen

Actually I'm wrong, Zulu isn't as dominant as most people think, the best way to Survive or blend into S.A is to be Multilingual we have 11 official Languages, I've met plenty of South Africans at campus who don't understand a single word of Zulu.

Its mainly about where you are and what the dominant Culture of language is in that Area.

Not knowing Zulu is not death sentence though you may come across those arrogant people who see it as a sin but Majority of South Africans just care about being able to Communicate with each other.

I know 7 languages that I learnt from all the different people I've met through out my life.

Its like when you go to Limpopo you are most likely to find Vendas, Tsonga, Pedis etc... Then you know those are the languages you'll most likely have to use in that Area.

I could give you many more examples but I don't really have the energy for that Cr*p.

To be frank Zulu, Xhosa, Swati and Ndebele are pretty much the same languages with different dialects

Setswana, Sotho, Pedi are also pretty much the same language with different dialects

Tsonga/Shangaan and Venda are of course more to the north

So the whole 11 language thing is not completely accurate.

No two official languages in Nigeria are almost interchangeable with each other and are very distinct language from one another

At least someone who decided to look at the reality of things before commenting, unlike most people here who just comment without thinking.

Lol. I'm not trying to knock Nigeria, as a Nigerian, I just think (like I have always thought, after reading extensively about apartheid in SA via my love for what Steven Bantu Biko stood for) should have done more and shown more leadership during that era directly, to support those fighting on the front-line. Too many small African countries contributed far more than Nigeria. Perhaps it was cos of bad leadership and corruption. Most of the Nigerian leaders then were CIA moles, anyway.

Also, the history of Africa is just too darn dark, yano. When King Leopold of Belgium was killing 30 million black people in Zaire, most of the people in the army he used in killing those people were black people from Africa. When Mussolini attacked Ethiopia with gas - a lot of folks who fought for his army in killing other African folks were from Somalia, Eritrea, and Libya. The army the British used in colonising Nigeria were predominantly from the West African and Caribbean frontiers, and they were mostly blacks etc.. That's the history of Africa.

A lot of African countries have never helped one another the way they should've - folks just do little, sensationalise it, and act they actually helped. Even during the bloody Angolan civil war, most African countries didn't even bother to help, despite the fact that it was more or less apartheid regime in South Africa trying to further spread its tentacles deeper into the continent - till Fidel Castro got Afro-Cubans to get involved.

That said, Nigeria did help in Sierra Leone and Liberia - but even the Sierra Leonean adventure had too much scandals you wouldn't want to talk about here. Especially what they did to the women and how a lot of them got involved in the illegal blood diamonds to enrich themselves. We just need to learn from history and do more for one another, if we have the resources to.

Lol. I'm not trying to knock Nigeria, as a Nigerian, I just think (like I have always thought, after reading extensively about apartheid in SA via

I would like you to point me to more information on the bolded. I have Sierra leonian friends and through out discussions have not heard stories about this except the here and there rumours of Nigerian Generals trying to use the War as an excuse to steal their diamonds and Soldiers who slept with some of their women and abandoned their kids to go back to Nigeria. Apart from that no MAJOR atrocities

You do know that the kids were in tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, no? They committed a lot of atrocities there.

C'mon a lot of those child soldiers were brought to the UK as refugees, and I grew up around a few of them. Too bad, they fell in love with the roads here, and most of them are either jailbirds or in jail right now. You need to hear their stories about the war. They used to crack jokes about Nigerian soldiers. But Nigeria did play a big role in ending that war, especially the battle for Freetown. Though the UK likes to take all credit cos the war somewhat ended when the SAS forces and British Army, and the Indian special forces got involved.
