Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), A Rip-off on Nigerians?

For many years of exploitation of Nigerians by the Telecom companies, I had expected the NCC to work with the These companies with a view of rolling out unlimited call and data plans that make calling and browsing more like a necessity than luxury for Nigerians. For a calling plan of about N4,000 or less monthly, for instance, one should be able to call all networks in Nigeria unlimited for the month for no additional cost. For a plan of N2,000 monthly for instance, one should be able to afford a Toll-free number for his business and should be able to have free unlimited incoming calling from clients monthly in order to run his business. Similar plans of example, N500 for 300 minutes etc should also be available to Nigerians under a well regulated communications system aimed at creating value for your money.

I was informed that the NCC collects an "interconnectivity charge" from each telecom company when you call a line with another line from a different operator, example calling Glo with MTN line, last time I checked, this amount was as much as up to N9 per minute. So my questions are:

1. If the Telecom companies, even with the high interconnectivity charges from NCC, make billions of profits annually, how much profit has the NCC been bringing into our government purse all these years of exploitation on Nigerians?

2. What exactly is this "interconnectivity charge" for, that prevents Nigerians from making calls at the same rate to any network of their choice?

While we blame the NNPC, Customs and other government agencies for massive fraud on Nigerians, we should start looking into the activity of the NCC to know the extent to which they have defrauded Nigerians over the years. The current Chairman of NCC, Mr Peter Igoh, and the Executive vice chairman, Dr Eugene Juwah, should explain to Nigerians why we cannot enjoy affordable calling and communication in Nigeria when countries like Malaysia, Ghana, India, China, United States etc enjoy relatively far cheaper call rates within their countries and abroad.

God Bless Nigeria

Please do my brother, all acts of impunity must be addressed and perpetrators brought to book. Our job as citizens is to be the watchful eye of government and resist all attempts by a few to imprison us in our own country

Thanks very much Op, I think we should make the NCC TO RESPOND TO THESE ALLEGATION, EITHER BY FORCE OR OTHERWISE. WE CAN BRING THE NEEDED CHANGE OURSELVES. BABA ONE CHANCE IS NOT RELIABLE.

My brother, as long as we have a president who takes action when needed, our efforts as social media and human rights activists will not be in vain
