The Federal Government on Thursday summoned the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Harry Purwanto, and protested the execution of four Nigerians for trafficking drugs to the Asian country, despite appeals.

The Undersecretary, Economic and Consular Affairs Department of the Ministry, Amb. Bokunolu Onemola, who met with Purwanto in Abuja, conveyed Nigeria’s position to the envoy, saying the men should not have been executed in view of the robust relationship between Nigeria and Indonesia.

The Indonesian government had executed by firing squad Jamiu Owolabi Abashin, 50, Martin Anderson, 50, Okwudili Oyatanze, 41, and Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, 47, and other nationals for drug trafficking, on Tuesday.

But Purwanto, in an interview with journalists after the meeting with Onemola, insisted that the execution of the convicts was carried out after all legal proceedings had been exhausted.

He said the case had been on for 10 years and Indonesia needed to make sure adequate opportunity was given to the convicts within the bounds of the law, stressing that his government suspended the moratorium on death penalty due to the gravity and dangerous impact of the drugs on the citizens.

“There was nothing we could do for those four Nigerians because every legal process was completed and only then did the government of Indonesia implement the decision of the court,” the envoy stated.

He explained that Indonesia suffered from the harsh reality of drug trafficking as about 4.5 million citizens, especially the youths, were affected by the narcotics, adding that only about 1.8 million of them had been rehabilitated.

The envoy added that between 33 to 50 victims of the drugs die every month, describing it as unfortunate.

On the issue of the Prisoner Transfer Agreement between both countries, Purwanto said, “Indonesia will be happy to do that but unfortunately we do not have the legal basis; we have to wait for a new legislation in Indonesia but then we have to convince our members of parliament to do that.”

Commenting on the incident, Onemola said irrespective of the fact that Nigeria had protested the execution on the basis of the subsisting friendly relations between both countries, Nigerians must desist from drug trafficking in countries where capital punishment was being implemented

I don't see anything bad in the federal government asking to know why they had to go ahead with the execution of the inmates. I guess it's standard procedure and even if it may not be, it is still okay as the interaction between the ambassador and the FG shows they can still foster good relationship as the ambassador promised they 'v got to do something about the capital punishment in Indonesia. It may not be about these four executed Nigerians but for the future. Maybe if you two guys above me read the whole story, you would have understood.

When Owolabi Jamiu Abashin that was initially sentenced to life imprisonment, then later 20years, n

finally death sentence , didn't have money for a lawyer ,where was the federal govt.? where was our

Ambassador to Indonesia?

is it now they want to protest the killing? there are still about fifty something on the line, if they like

they should close their eyes until those once are killed, then they will start protesting.

It is hilarious that Nigeria which has the death penalty in her law is condemning it in another country

Summoning the Envoy can't change the damage done. It can only forestall future occurrence of such.
I don't blame the Indonesia government coz they UPHOLD their law without prejudice. Before you enter a foreign nation, there are laws and rules that would had been read to you, it's in your best interest to see you never break any and besides,
these men had been on death row for 10 GOOD years without any Opposition or Legal action.

Those Nigerians killed are signal from the Indonesia Government that NO SINNERS/OFFENDERS WILL GO UNPUNISHED. Those Nigerians, i believe were aware of the punishment for Drug trafficking but they WILLINGLY/DELIBERATELY go against the law knowing fully that it's a RISKY and Life-and-Death matter.

Nigeria should just develop herself so we won't be having a scenario like this. We need a BETTER Nigeria where Everything works.

Our government keeps getting clueless and clueless everyday. Why the protest? Indonesia has drug laws, that must be obeyed, enacted in her country and our govt is protesting that. As a matter of fact we should have such death carrying laws against drug trafficking in this country. Indonesia wouldn't be killing our citizens for drug offences if we do our home works the right ways. Indonesia don't want drug trafficking and drug peddling in her country,.. why is that so difficult to understand?
