Re: Close by Nobody: 2:04pm On May 03, 2015 |
To: His Excellency, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, The Executive Governor, Ondo State. Dear Sir, AN APPEAL TO MR. GOVERNOR TO COME TO THE RESCUE OF ONDO STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, OKITIPUPA (OSUSTECH) BEING A COMMUNIQUEE ISSUED ON THE INSPECTION TOUR AND COURTESY VISIT OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS, JOINT CAMPUS COMMITTEE (NANS JCC) ONDO STATE AXIS TO THE SCHOOL ON TUESDAY 28TH APRIL, 2015. ‘…THE LABOUR OF OUR HEROES PAST SHALL NEVER BE INVAIN’ this is why we, the leaders of the above named association, serve with heart and might to enhance one nation bond in freedom, peace, equity, justice, solidarity, and unity. If this notion passed to us by our ancestral progenitors is lacking in their socio-cultural and political nuances, then, a striking alternative becomes imperative. The NANS JCC, Ondo State axis, with all the student union leaders in the state, having paid a courtesy visit/ inspection tour to our highly esteemed and cherished citadel of learning in our dear state, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OSUSTECH) write, to express our grief, disappointment, and fear for our future as it bleaks owing to the deplorable negligent state, maltreatment and insecurity of that encapsulates this pragmatic citadel of learning, and it is our fear that should we keep quiet, the future we anticipated may never come. During this visit, your Excellency, we were able to gather the following: 1. That the members of staff of the institution have not received salary for three months now and that this has resulted in the lackadaisical attitude of the lecturers towards their work, thus impeding the reasons for Nigerian Students coming to school. This is quite appealing sir. 2. That a whole University of Technology in the ‘best’ state in Nigeria cannot boast of a single motor able road since its inception, this is alarmingly sardonic sir! Report shows that the road has been neglected since the inception of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko’s administration in 2011. 3. That if a nation cannot pass education on to its generation, it is quite evident that it will soon die a natural death. It is heart-seizing, your excellency, that in a state where school fees is expected to be subsidized, being an OIL PRODUCING STATE in Nigeria, the students in such school where even the oil is being generated to feed the nation, pay N 125,000 (One Hundred and Twenty Five Thousand Naira) and N 175,OOO (One Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand Naira)as school fees for indigene and non indigene respectively whereas in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, RUGIPO and other citadels of higher learning in the state pay less. Is this not a rape on our fundamental human right? 4. That no fewer than 50 students complained about the service rendered at the Health Centre as being substandard and uncalled for. During our inspection, it was disheartening to see the Health Centre of a whole university in shambles and lack the requirements of a First Aid Box let alone that of a Health Centre. This calls for urgent attention. 5. That the whole university is subjected to total darkness amidst substandard and dilapidated infrastructure in a thick forest-like environment where wild animals become the neighbors of dynamic Nigerian students. The Sports Complex is a similitude of game reserve, all these happening in a school where students pay sport fee yet denied access to it. We also gathered that the management has painstakingly resulted to fueling the school generator so as to power the university’s power plant since 2011. The hostel facility is another lugubrious issue to address. The hostel we met under construction in the school is a sample of hide-out for bandits, therefore does not worth housing the future leaders of this country. We want to say that such environment is prone to absorbing dangerous animals and men of the elusive world that could become a threat to the lives and properties of the students and the community at large. 6. That the students are forced to pay N 20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira) for internet fee that they never had access to. They payN 3,500 (Three Thousand Five Hundred Naira) for I.D Card that is even lower in quality than its N200 (Two Hundred Naira) equivalent. All these and more among other exorbitant levies are imposed on the studentswhich calls for urgent attention. Imagine a university where development levy is paid and yet could not be dignified as its name implies- ‘university’. Are we in a glorified secondary school? 7. That OSUSTECH has been denied a Students’ Union Government for long. This, we see, as an indirect colonization in our father land and classical apartheid policy against students. We bluntly reject this unanimously and implore Mr. Governor to address the issue as well with utmost attention. Having said all that, your excellency, our demand as aunion is: 1. That Mr. Governor should pay a visit to OSUSTECH in person, to observe things himself and subsequently instruct the appropriate quarters to pay the salary of the members of staff in the school with immediate effect so that they can teach the students with vigor and as well attend their basic and personal needs, remember a hungry man is an angry man. 2. That the road which has been neglected since 2011, being the only road that leads to the university, should be given urgent attention lest the road becomes famished for the lives of those that ply it. This request covers both the interior and exterior road network in the university community. 3. That the escalated school fees be reduced to its affordable level just as it is in AAUA, RUGIPO, Ondo State School of Health Technology, Akure, School of Nursing, Akure, among others. 4. That a comprehensive Health Centre be given to OSUSTECH so as to guarantee a salubrious state of the university. Enough health officials should be employed and sophisticated apparatus should be provided so as to ease their works and as well serve as a medium for practical for all health science related courses in the university community. 5. That the state government should find a lasting solution to the issue of electricity to avoid total darkness and unnecessary wasting of money on diesel. Also, the bushy environment should be given a befitting look, ranging from the Sports Complex down to Business and Entrepreneur Centre and other strategic places in the university. This, we believe, would give us hope of having another 21st Century properly called! All the buildings under construction should be given maximum attention and those that are already in use should be renovated. 6. That we out rightly reject N 20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira) internet fee including the N 3,500 (Three Thousand Five Hundred Naira) I.D card fee. If at all we must pay, let us see what we are paying for. We say no to any form of exploitation! 7. That a standard, autonomous and recognized Students’ Union Governmentbe indoctrinated into the school system so that the voice of Nigerian students could be heard at every point in time. Your Excellency sir, it is our fervent hope that you will heed to our plea, feel our burning tears and give us utmost attention because we are not even sure, with the way thing are going in that campus, could guarantee a better future for the inhabitants there in. Sir, if you have remitted money into that school and some individuals have used it for their selfish interest, we enjoin your Excellency to investigate and deal with any one that is found wanton without fear or favor. We shall stand solidly behind you. We want to use this medium to reiterate our commitment to the support of the government as long as its policies is channeled towards the wish of the citizens it represents. This message is not in any way to antagonize the government but to say the truth where necessary and it is our hope that Mr. Governor will attend to these issues raised being a listening father of the students. However, the association is unanimously giving the Ondo State Government 14 days ultimatum taking effect from Tuesday, 5th of May, 2015 to address all these issues and it is our fervent hope that normalcy will be brought to all these abnormalities insha-struggle. God bless Ondo State. God bless Nigeria. On this note we say Aluta continua, Victoria Acerta. Yours in struggle, SIGNED: Comrade Odunayo Kowe (Kalusa) 08060337337 Chairman, NANS JCC, Ondo Axis. Resolute Tosin Abegunde, SANS 07064414741 Publicity Secretary,NANS JCC Ondo State.(Announcer) 2 Shares

(Ex student union leaders, O.A.U)
The meeting with the Governor of Ondo State which
was held on the Wednesday, the 6th of May 2015
which commences at about 3 pm lasted for about 3
hours begin with the chief press secretary to the
Governor and also ended with him which shows the
fatherly love he has for us all and also his position to
make sure the Ondo State University of Science &
Technology, Okitipupa start witness immediate
development within the shortest period.
However in the meeting that lasted about 3 hours
and 15 minutes saw many stone been turned and the
following was agreed with his Excellency, the chief
executive Governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Ramon
Mimiko that
An Ad-hoc committee should be set up immediately
to look into all the matters we tabled, visit the school
and submit a report about the visitation to
OSUSTECH.
The school fee will be reduced within the next 14
days after due consultation between him (Governor
Olusegun Mimiko) and the management of the
school.
The staff and students association to be inaugurated
with immediate effect (S.U.G, ASUU & NASUU).
A student bus will be given to OSUSTECH as part of
our demand within the next 14 days.
The issue of transportation should be addressed
urgently. The governor however advice the university
management to acquire additional shuttle bus and
register commercial taxi (korope) and motorcycle in
other to ply the university campus.
Road construction work to begin immediately as
we’ve already been witnessing the arrival of some
construction engineers in the campus.
The payment of #20,000 internet charge should stop
with immediate effect adding that, whenever the
service is available, it should be optional for
interested users.
The government will donate a 50 KVA generator set
which means that we might not even need the small
generators we currently have in the campus (as the
Governor has stated)
Electrification work should begin as soon as possible
adding that electricity should be available from the
school gate to the lecture from.
The generator should service the students during the
day and for at least 3 hours per night meaning, it
should work from 8 a.m. in the morning to 4 pm in
the evening and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
The ban on fellowship within campus (both Christian
and Muslim) should be lifted with immediate effect.
Staff and students welfare must be look into as a
matter of urgency.
The school gate must wear a new look as soon as
possible adding that, the kind of gate OSUSTECH has
does not worth that of a university.
Staff salaries will be fully paid as soon as possible
adding that February salary was paid on that day we
met and also promising that March salary will also be
paid before the end of next week.
Now that our cries and agitations has been listened
to, the protest should stop which has stopped and
everything has now returned back to normalcy,
academic and administrative work is expected to
resume back on Monday. The CELT building including
the bakery, water/juice factory which was locked
during the protest has since been opened and
commercial activity has resumed fully. (Baba should
go and build another building for CELT and release
our SUG building for us as soon as possible o)
Since the Sport complex work is 80% ready, Work
should be completed as soon as possible and the
made available for students use
We therefore plead to the management and staff of
Ondo State University of science & Technology to
please add 2 weeks to our academic calander and
probably remove it from our vacation so as to cover
up all the time wasted during the protest.
Finally, the Chief Executive officer of the State, Dr.
Olusegun Mimiko released to the visitors the sum of
#500,000 for the students who came for the meeting
as transportation and feeding.
Below is report of how the money was spent so far
and the balance as released to me by the financial
committee.
Subject Amount
Transportation of 2 buses @ #20,000 each #40,000
Feeding of 49 Attendees @ #1,000 each #49,000
Feeding of 2 drivers @ 1,000 each #2,000
Mega Phone #3,000
Press Men #35,000
Feeding of NANS/JCC officials during ad-hoc visit
#2,000
NANS/JCC present during the meeting at akure
#20,000
NANS/JCC Chairman #10,000
TOTAL EXPENSES #164,000
BALANCE #336,000
However, the ad-hoc committee set up by the
governor headed by the Chief Press Secretary to the
Governor, Mr. Eni Akinsola (a son of the soil) visited
the permanent site on Thursday the 7th of May, 2015
at about 5:15 pm and there were less than 20
students on campus when the visitors arrived. We all
move round the campus and after the meeting, the
CPS took every staff and students he met on campus
out for relaxation and little fun fair. Some students as
a matter of urgencies called their colleagues and
about 49 students and 3 staff were hosted by him
(CPS).
I want to believe we have fought a good fight and we
await the response and promise made by the
Governor and the Ondo State Government to begin to
manifest as soon as possible as we awaits new
dimensional change in the campus as fast as
possible.
Once again, I want to thank everyone who has
contributed to this struggle in one way or the other
either physically, morally, spiritually and even
financially.
I want to also thank all the government officials
present at the meeting, the Ondo State Government
and most importantly, the Governor of the state, Dr.
Olusegun Ramon Mimiko for his innermost passion
and leadership role. We appeal that the Ondo State
Government and the management of the University
will liaise together and grant our request as
promised so as that avoid the occurrence of the
Protest by the students of OSUSTECH and NANS.
Finally, my special thanks to the #save_osustech
ambassadors and those who stop by us, those
against us and specifically, those who hunt us with
words of mouth, action, comment, false rumor,
write-ups and direct accusation due to one reason or
the other. If I have failed in my own responsibility to
do the necessary, due to logistics delay, please
forgive me but I will also advice that we should
always not judge based on information from one side
of the coin. We should show concern for our
representative’s welfare and play maturity with one
love.
I therefore submit by saying, Aluta Continue, Victorial
Ascerta.
God bless NANS
God bless NANS/JCC Ondo State Axis
God Bless all Nigerian Students

God bless Ondo State Government
God Bless Ondo State.
