TheReborn: So why did a museum in Virginia specifically build an Igbo village becasue: "Nearly 40% of the Africans imported into Virginia during this time were brought from a part of the West African coast called the Bight of Biafra. Many of these captives were Igbo, a people living in the upland area north of the Bight of Biafra in what is now the nation of Nigeria. The West African Farm represents life in a free Igbo household in the Biafran hinterlands in the 1700s." http://www.frontiermuseum.org/exhibits/1700s-west-africa/ 5 Likes 1 Share |

TheReborn: By quoting an article that mentions the ejagham in passing once, you inadvertently shot your own self in the foot with evidence re-iterating that majority of takeaways from bight of biafra were from Igbo land. Now, take it slowly as you revulse in horror at the point underlined in red below: From the very same article you quoted. http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/23267213?uid=3738720&uid=2129&uid=2&uid=70&uid=4&sid=21106686753233 2 Likes

TheReborn: That is not true. There were some that were brought to the USA from the Caribbean, but most were landed in Maryland or Virginia. You have to know the history of the USA in knowing that those 2 states were two of the original 13 colonies, but all of the American colonies originally had slavery. Slaves were typically landed in Annapolis Maryland and sold in the slave markets of Baltimore. Other were sold in the slave markets in Virginia or New York (btw, Wall Street in New York City started as a slave market selling Africans). http://msa.maryland.gov/msa/intromsa/pdf/slavery_pamphlet.pdf http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/6762/ http://www.nathanielturner.com/baltimoreslavemarkets.htm http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/18/AR2010021801675.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alan-singer/wall-street-was-a-slave-m_b_1208536.html http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-plans-memorial-wall-street-slave-market-1700s-article-1.2187091 2 Likes |

pazienza: Indeed it is not but it speaks about the Caribbean to score cheap points between Yoruba and Igbo rivalries. Many Caribbean folks despite our different nationalities and rivalries see ourselves as West Indians...one Caribbean with regards to the English speaking Caribbean. What gives you the authority to speak on Caribbean nations or their cultures? Are you the spokesperson for Barbados or Jamaica? I decided to respond after the guy/girl said that we in the Caribbean speak Igbo, study Igbo history and practice the culture based on hearsay which I merely sought to correct as I have observed a lot of you speak about Caribbean cultures theoretically but are no way on the ground. There is nothing wrong with him/her holding that view but me being on the ground I am privy to tell him/her that it is not true. That has been by major contribution to the thread. On that aspect I can speak because I have been to other Caribbean Islands and know quite a bit of Caribbean folks as 10% of our population are foreigners with Bajan and Jamaicans making up a high amount of our population. Many Trinidadian Blacks forefathers are from other Caribbean Islands due to the fact we were not highly populated and hence they migrated to Trinidad due to government policies and economics.Heck my cousin is Bajan and her mother is a Jamaican. No where did I try to claim that Caribbean folks do not have Igbo ancestry. If Igbo people want to reach out to Igbo descendants in the Caribbean and expose them to Igbo culture I strongly agree that is a positive step.My best friend daughter is half-igbo and because of marital problems her daughter is not being exposed to Igbo culture which I personally find is absurd.Any African group that want to reach out to us because they deem we are there descendants is always welcomed as generally Caribbean folks are quite proud about African contribution to who we are as a people. 2 Likes |

Ihuomadinihu: Umm...did I say that?I merely corrected the guy who claimed we speak Igbo, study Igbo history and practice the culture based on hearsay. Those Caribbean countries or groups who decide to re-establish or strengthen Igbo culture in their midst...I have no problem with that and it is welcomed. |

the first table shows that more slaves from southeastern Nigeria ended up in North America than slaves from western Nigeria, and more southwestern Nigerian slaves ended up in South America and the carribeans, explains d dominance of ancient Southwestern Nigerian culture in Carribeans and South America............. interesting |

Whoa!!! Such a high percentage contributed to the slavemasters. I imagine OSUs, war slaves n battle captives, offenders contributed to the high numbers. Goes to show that Igbos are the most dissatisfied, worst war torn tribe in Nigeria, It could also mean they gave the whites A LOT of wahala. I like to go with the 1st opinion tho. |
Re: Igbo Ideograms On Grave Stones In Virginia, US by AkanIgbo: 11:30pm On May 03, 2015 |
bigfrancis21: Again. It has to be said. That it is common knowledge where the slaves came from. There are some Yoruba that ended up in the USA and there were some Igbos that ended up in Brazil, but Brazil and other Caribbean, Central and South American destinations is by and large where most Yoruba people ended up. They still practicing Santeria in Brazil and Cuba right now. http://www.powerfulsanteriaspells.com/what-is-santeria.html Btw, I realize that Portuguese is the official language, but some of the Africans especially some of the Bantu people still speak their languages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quilombo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimbundu 1 Like |

AkanIgbo: Yea, Santeria is practised in brazil and cuba and the yoruba-derived religions have spread to other regions in latin america, not originally there before. The ifa priests in these yoruba-derived religions take classes to learn to read the divination recitals in proper yoruba to some level of fluency. Asides the recitals in a little bit off-accent yoruba by the native portuguese or spanish speaking ifa priests, there is no evidence anywhere of native latin americans speaking yoruba at home or as second language just as you would have in it Nigeria. I don't see evidence anywhere of the quilombos speaking a bantu language in brazil. They are an african derived group as has been established. But the survival of their original language till today is what needs to be proved. 3 Likes |
