babyosisi: I mean you should have a functional brain with your analysis of the whole story. You should know without being told that your comment is stupid illogical and should never be made at all but you'd rather crucify Soyinka than give him a benefit of a doubt knowing fully well he is not a tribal jingoist like the like of Achebe, Chimamanda n co. I mean can't you grow to stop hating even if it is in your blood must you die of it ? As human we should strive to be beta rather than being eager to condemn others esp those that never exhibited such tribalistic traits previously. 15 Likes |

There's nothing "unoriginal" about the dumb, pathetic, insulting and tribalistic BS he said about the Igbos. He said those words, Havard website just decided to post the parts of his speech they deemed important for them. This ain't the "full text" of his speech. His insults on my tribe was totally unnecessary and bigotic. And it hurt me and my fellow Igbos that campaigned endlessly for Buhari to win. I guess the tribalistic nature of him has finally been laid bare. If i knew supporting APC as an Igbo was because of money and my stomach, which wasn't true, i wouldn't have wasted my time supporting a cause where they see my tribe as an outcast. This country is a sick joke. 4 times Buhari contested, 4 times majority of the North voted him. The sick and depraved mind of Soyinka never insulted the Hausa-Fulanis. When the Igbos voted Obasanjo twice, were we voting for our stomach too? The SS and SE voted for Jonathan, while the majority of the entire North and SW voted for Buhari. Yet he chose only the SE to pour his senility on. Maybe he wanted a case where everyone will vote APC, which leads me to ask; "what's the need of an opposition if everyone votes for one party?" I revere this man so much so i won't be insulting the entire Yorubas because of one man's hatred. When Oba Akiolu wished my tribe death, i never insulted the Yorubas, so Soyinka won't make me do such. I've met and befriended many Yorubas and they all accommodated me, loved me and never hated me. So i won't judge all of them with one man's senility. But as i type this, i regret championing the cause of APC, it's clear everything in this country is down to tribal bigotry. What a cursed country. 4 Likes |

I wished the excerpt would've highlighted Soyinka's ideas of social dissuasions which Buhari could implement to impede the influx of boko haram's insurgents. It's understandable to be "cautiously optimistic" considering his Muslim and coup-plotting past, but he's no different than any other politician on this planet. As much as I want to see eventual change from him, he cant stop the corruption, in fact he must indulge as well. Politics is about setting yourself up, financially firstly, for the long run. At a table of crooks, the righteous one who suddenly backs out is the one who's killed, coup. He knows their plans, he could stop or expose it. It's a reason no one knows precisely how billions of Niara remains missing. Instead buhari needs to control the crooks appetite, make them stop robbing and pooping where they live, and that's on Nigeria, but instead want to invest in Nigeria. |

it is not everything he reacts to, he has to rise above tribalism - but first he must create that awareness. |

“There’s a kind of complacency that frightens me about many world leaders,” Soyinka said. “Sometimes it’s because they’re balancing forces, in the Middle East and Africa.” Obama, did you hear that? 4 Likes |

by Taiwo George http://www.thecable.ng/igbos-vote-based-stomach-says-soyinka Nobel Laureate and foremost social critic, Wole Soyinka, is of the opinion that Nigerians of Igbo extraction are the only people in the country who can be predicted accurately. Delivering a lecture titled ‘Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies’ at the Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African & African American Research, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, the revered scholar described people from that part of the country as “greedy”. “Igbos remained unrepentant and resolute towards their strategic objective of secession at worst; or a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction at best,” he said at the lecture, which held on April 29. “The climax of MASSOB’s war against the Nigerian state was the call for sit-ins and civil disobedience that shut down markets and public services, as Igbos stayed at home in a symbolic gesture to assert Biafran independence. The call was honoured by governors in the two principal Ibo states, though without fanfare. “The Igbos are probably the only group of Nigerians that you can predict with great accuracy whom they will vote for in an election, because they tend to put their votes where their stomachs take them; suffering as it were, from incurable money-mindedness, as they would stop at nothing in their quest for personal financial gain.” Commenting on the result of Nigeria’s presidential election, Soyinka said the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan would have been “disastrous”, as Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s president-elect, is better option. |
