Do the Ethiopians really make those WZ551's and T-72's? Nothing in that CCTV video suggests they make/ assemble them.

Yes........ I support African defence manufacturing for the African Army.

To paraphrase Eeben Barlow, "Africa has become the dumping ground for obsolete [Cold War relics and ] equipment, bought on bad advice[and charlatans looking to make a quick buck].
Intercepted on the weekend in the Beni area, DRC by a unit of "quiet professionals" cool acting on actionable intel, dozens of these similar scopes. Best in the world in the '60s, each scope was inscribed with a matching serial number to a Dragunov sniper rifle by the NPZ factory. The Cryllic writing means they failed factory quality controls and were only meant for training. Yet someone has been flogging them, and some fool purchased this obsolete crap. Now the hunt is on for the rifles.

It's all well and good........ however, my African countries do not have defence manufacturing, so what do you propose they do?

The Haya people of Tanzania have been linked to one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time: the invention of steel. Archaeologist Peter Schmidt discovered through a literalist combination of archaeology and oral tradition that the Haya had been forging steel for around 2000 years.

This discovery was made accidentally while Schmidt was learning about the history of the Haya via their oral tradition. He was led to a tree which was said to rest on the spot of an ancestral furnace used to forge steel. A group of elders were later tasked with the challenge of recreating the forges.

At this time they were the only ones to remember the practice, which had fallen into disuse due in part to the abundance of steel flowing into the country from foreign sources. In spite of the lack of practice the elders were able to create a furnace using mud and grass which when burned provided the carbon needed to transform the iron into steel. Later investigation of the land yielded 13 other furnaces similar in design to the re-creation set up by the elders. This process is very similar to open hearth furnace steelmaking.

These furnaces were carbon-dated and were found to be as old as 2000 years. Steel of similar quality did not appear in Europe until several centuries later

Valid point. Eastern and Western Defence weren't as powerful as they were right now, it took innovative people to take that leap forward to build something others hadn't thought of before.

Come now Henry, you know full well it's not just about manufacturing. It all goes back to doctrine. Algeria, for example, did not opt for the Super Hind because it was nice to have. It took them 3 years after they started fighting the GIA insurgency to update their doctrine and in this example, attack helicopter doctrine. They re-evaluated doctrine, were upfront about the limitations of the Hind, and sought an applicable asset. They opted for a combination of both an upgrade to SuperHind of their obsolete MI-24/35 in the short term, and Mi-28 (not available then) in the long-term. Their updated doctrine -based on existing and likely future engagements - calls for their entire attack heli capability being SuperHind and Mi-28. Same thinking applies to their entire military.

Now, I've personally come across entire warehouses in the DRC filled with unused BCN suits, that not a single DRC soldier has ever been taught to put on, much less fight in. Why were these bought? And in such numbers? Same with the 75kg ground penetrating warheads being demolished, that the DRC has no means of employing. Why were they bought? The factory reject PSO-1 scopes, which Russia doesn't even use for training anymore, were stored in Bulgarian boxes marked 2010, for the DRC army. Why were they bought? Loads of obsolete crap floats around here - traded from the official army to rebels - and one wonders why. That is just one country.

Now do a proper evaluation of various African armies and apply the same questions.

Incidentally, your country, Nigeria - not starved of funds to purchase armaments - falls into the same trap. This is not anti-Nigerian bias, but a Pan-African concern. West Africa needs a strong Nigeria. But ask yourself this question honestly, what is Nigeria's doctrine on armour, artillery, maritime, air, infantry and is it best served by the materiel it has, and plans to have. The cycle goes: doctrine, organisation, training and materiel, and all four are linked. By the way, no African army masters all 4, no army does. But some are closer than most.

Sorry for the "discussion", but there isn't a decent thread for it on this site, and I can't waste my time with the penile-measurement on the other thread.

@ henry how good and advanced these beechcraft are ....... ? because to me they luk like old relic's, can they be deployed to the north-east ?

Those 3 units are NAF transport Beechcraft 350, only liaison transport role.

NAF has 2 units of Beechcraft 350 ER version for ISTAR role in war zone, they have 80 km range big under-belly air to ground search radar pod and retractable FLIR for excellent battlefield surveillance and target acquisition plus data-link communication. It was these aircraft in NE war zone that Nigeria used to relay online real-time data-link battle field minute by minute situation report and battle space image monitoring to NAF and NA top brass in Abuja hundreds of kilometers away from the Boko Haram HQ in Sambisa forest.

Nigeria currently fields the most modern and most sophisticated ISTAR aircraft on the African continent.

It's an investment of about $ 200 million for the ATR-42 surveyor, Beechcraft 350ER, and Diamond DA42 aircraft.

Enough money to buy 12 units of JF-17 Thunder 4th generation jet fighters, but worth the money. The ISTAR aircraft were purchased to defeat sea piracy and border area illegal immigration, but Boko Haram war made us use them in a war we did not plan for. The aircraft are all full military specifications by manufacturer.

First off, since this is a Photos and videos thread, photos must be added at the end of long discussions " derialments".

Yes, local manufacturing is an integral part of standardisation, just as well as doctrine and "change in doctrine" gained from experience.

South-African land forces procurements are tailored from the experiences/ tactics gained from the bush war and pursuit of freedom fighters.

These experiences are better actualised based on the support of a strong local defence industry, especially in the land forces area. It allows for standardisation of equipments, building equipments that are suited to the weather/climatic conditions they are most likely to operate and to their required ballistics level. This is a fact! Not only are they cheaper in the long run, they are well suited to their requirements.

Algeria's recent purchases are tailored to, 1, experiences gained from fighting insurgents and 2, Morocco. Besides, how many African countries have the $11 billion Algeria splashes on it's military every year.

The DRC buys in such a manner because it is desperate, short on resources, short on the skill needed, poor planning.

Nigeria, has it's well documented problems, but here are what I believe are the facts.

Doctrine : Nigeria's procurement doctrine is to be diversified. Because Nigeria has a small defence industry, it cannot meet up with the large military demands, and it doesn't want a situation were it is held hostage by a single supplier. Nigeria's Defence procurement analysis from the 80's showed, Nigeria highest defence supplier holds only 25% of overall defence exports to Nigeria.

If Nigeria had a strong local industry, we would have been able to equip the Army with a single type APC, say, the Igirigi APC and it variants for an example. What this means is, instead of buying CS/VP3 from china, cobra from turkey, Reva from south-africa, BTR from Russia, MT-LB from russia, styer Austris et al, we would have a single standardised military, and a less logistical head ache.

Doctrine update: Nigeria's experiences in COIN has shown the limitation of Nigerian Hinds, Hence the Airforce desire to procure the T-129 attack Helicopter for it's network enabled program. It is evidence that Nigeria is continuously updating her doctrine to meet up the contemporary challenges it currently faces.

The Nigerian problem is also caused by poor planning, freak buying, military dictatorship and under-estimating the enemy. However a good number of these buys are a stop gap, purchases intended to deal quickly with the problem.

I believe i've giving a good response to Nigeria's systems proliferation problem.
