sister Caro, come on now!!!!
i understand that you have lived in SA for the last 10years, and probably made it your home now, and therefore you dislike people who have anything remotely negative to say about Sa, but i suggest you get over it.

again, tell me how what i wrote "EXPLAINS" the xenophobic attacks from South africans towards black Africans? you must be a genius because i dont see it.

also, how what you wrote solved the problem of the xenophobic attacks?! are you saying that putting people in refugee camps solves this xenophobic problem? are you saying that sending africans back to their countries solved the problem (i guess people who have businesses should carry their shops on their heads while leaving, right)?! are you now saying that there was no police in these strategic places during the xenophobic attacks?! highly laughable..... so, in a way what you are "really" saying is that the problem is STILL there... and therefore, if the problem wasnt solved, shouldnt we (africans who would like to visit SA) be worried?

now, Morpeus24 explain perfectly why many south Africans dislike Nigerians, and that is the type of direct answers i was looking for. if you have any beef, i suggest you focus and control your misplaced anger, and instead reply to what he wrote (beware, he seems to know a great deal about SA, lol)

i have never said that there are places 100% safe in this world, i am just pointing out that there is a xenophobic problem in SA. you should accept that instead of trying to make it look like this happens everywhere. yes, there is racism all over the world, but to see people being burned alive simply because they were africans, i havent seen often. so excuse me if what happened in SA make me ask direct questions.... and dont settle for BS answer that "everything is ok now in SA", when we all know this is not the 1st time, nor the last.

the day Africans (in US/Europe or anywhere else in this world) are burned alive for no damn reason, then that is day i will question anyone who will come on NL to praise these places.

stereotypes are everywhere thats one thing we all need to know.
Its just like people who label every muslim as a potential terrorist. Its obviously not true, so sometimes its always best to ignore ignorant people.

show me where i said there arent any problems in SA?

again, tell me how what i wrote "EXPLAINS" the xenophobic attacks from South africans towards black Africans? you must be a genius because i dont see it.
if you cant see how you answered you own question and went on to ask the the same thing again, then i really cant help you with anything.

lso, how what you wrote solved the problem of the xenophobic attacks?!

I already said it will require a long term solution
which does not take a day or 2 to come up with.
Did the UN come up with a solution to terrorism in a week or is it still ongoing? Lets not find pleasure in being illogical please.

that will not require are you saying that putting people in refugee camps solves this xenophobic problem?
do you prefer they went back the burnt houses or come live in your house? undecided

you saying that sending africans back to their countries solved the problem (i guess people who have businesses should carry their shops on their heads while leaving, right)?!

Are illegal immigrants not repriatrated everywhere else in the world? Please help me understand? Those who were legal still had a choice to stay behind. So honestly i dont see the point you are trying make. undecided

are you now saying that there was no police in these strategic places during the xenophobic attacks?! highly laughable.....

Let me out it in a way you can understand. The South African Police Services and the South African National Defence Force also known as pulbic authorities were placed in different areas to moniter them, prevent and stop attacks and arrest prepetrator.

so, in a way what you are "really" saying is that the problem is STILL there... and therefore, if the problem wasnt solved, shouldnt we (africans who would like to visit SA) be worried?
did i just not say its safe for foreigners to move around the areas where the xenophobic attacks once took place and did i just not say the govt is still looking for ways to redress the problem which take a long time to implement? If this is not the height of ignorance i really dont know what else is honestly.

have never said that there are places 100% safe in this world, i am just pointing out that there is a xenophobic problem in SA. you should accept that instead of trying to make it look like this happens everywhere. yes, there is racism all over the world, but to see people being burned alive simply because they were africans, i havent seen often. so excuse me if what happened in SA make me ask direct questions.... and dont settle for BS answer that "everything is ok now in SA", when we all know this is not the 1st time, nor the last.
i saw the world trade centre being blown up simply because US interefered in the middle east affairs and i have watched documentaries on serial killers like Gary Leon Ridgway kill possibly over 90women simply because he had a thing for dead women. this will not be the only or last attacks in US but has that made u feel an less safe in America or made you feel like relocating?

the day Africans (in US/Europe or anywhere else in this world) are burned alive for no damn reason, then that is day i will question anyone who will come on NL to praise these places.
do something useful with yourself for once and see if this has not already happened during slavery or before human rights applied to all in Europe and USA.

In Tennessee black people were lynched for being black. Those who took their time to learn a little about US history would know this.

Do a little research on the texas legal system and check if black people are not convicted and executed for murders they didnt commit.

Are Nigerian men killing their wives for financial benefit not enough proof that these incidents occur in today's USA? We are not even talking about a stranger killing another stranger but a spouse killing another because of a patrimonial gain.

you clearly came on the thread with an intention to make SA look as bad as possible and thats wh you keep insisting on this.

I have lived in SA for over a decade and i can say that if you live in surburbs and make your money legally you will not be victim to some of these things.

You cannot claim to know a whole lot more about a place you have never been to. Let me guess you get you info from selected websites on the net? And you always assume all you read is 100% true?

In that case we can all read a few websites on violence and gang wars in brooklyn and conclude that the whole of USA is filled with gangs and drug dealers undecided

thanks for clarifying that the problem in SA is still there and will take a few yrs to solve.... therefore confirming what i have been saying all along.

the problem with people like you is that you have the audacity to compare any crime around the world with these xenophobic attacks on Africans.i have rarely seen or heard of places where they burned africans alive for no damn plausible reasons, but if you do let me know, i will be glad to denounce these places too. i couldnt care less if they killed Chinese people in Tibet, because i aint Chinese, i couldnt care less if they killed criminals in Malaysia because i aint a criminal, and i couldnt care less if Muslim extremists are bombing everywhere because they kill EVERYBODY regardless if they are whites blacks arabs asians green Christians Muslims Atheists igbos yorubas hausas yankee Nigerians Togolese French Americans Russians women men etc... however i do care when my people (aka Nigerians/Africans only) are targeted for NO REASON WHATSOEVER, and possibly burned alive.

and you even had the audacity to bring slavery lynching to this discussion, as if we should now look at what happened back in slavery days, and use that to justify what is happening today in 2015. where do they find people like you?! well i guess, if i should lower myself and think like you do, African people were sold back in slavery days, so it should be ok for people to be sold today (in 2015), and we shouldnt look at it as abominable atrocities whatsoever, and we should instead travel to these places with a big smile on our faces, pretending nothing is happening? NONSENSE!!!!

we are on a website about Nigeria and Nigerians, therefore if there is any country out there where Nigerians are "possibly" burned alive, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRICANS, then we have a right to talk about it and possibly denounce these places. you can try your best to make it look like it is nothing, or that it happens everywhere, but i beg to differ.

you clearly have nothing to say on the subject (or dont understand English) when bringing poor points such as serial killers, as if there aint any in SA? (go educate yourself on the +150 SA serial killers); husbands killing their wives for financial gain (as if this crimes only happens in the US?); or people being wrongly convicted for crimes they did not commit (as if this only happens to blacks or in the US?). but hey, if you open a thread on any of the above subjects, i will be glad to school you on that too....but let us not shift the focus away from what is important here: the ONGOING discrimination and killing of innocent Africans in SA, just because they are foreigners in SA. ......... maybe we should accept such act today because lynching of innocent people was acceptable in Tennessee back in slavery days.

i can see the SA brigade has arrived, lol!

some really are drug lords and some arent. Its as simple as that.

My sister the problem I have is the demonization of Nigerians in South Africa as drug lords. This perception is perpetuated by the media, the locals and the government by and large. I have mingled with quite a good number of Nigerians during my time in SA from; mechanics to waiters, to Doctors, politicians, engineers, teachers, shop keepers, barbers, bouncers, hair dressers etc etc. The so called drug lords and pimps usually operate within a restricted area which is an easy spot for police or the government to infiltrate and sweep out these hoodlums if they wish to do so. The rest of the Nigerian population are busy making a living for themselves.

Granted we are a very loud people and are a very proud people(especially my Igbo brothers down there), which depending on how you look at it is a virture or vice, we do not cause any harm to people, stay within our communities and are a very warm and communal people.

We do not constitute the highest number of semi or unskilled immigrants in that country neither do we as a collective sap the resources or benefits of that country. Most want to go to school and find a living for themselves.

We are however the most despised of all foreign nationals in that country and in my opinion are so, for our ingenuity, entrepreneurship and hard work by many who mask their envy and hatred within the "drug dealer" " drug lord" slogan.

There is no other country in Africa that I have been to nor worked in that this phenomena is prevalent and believe me I have worked in quite a few.

You people in South Africa should share the realities on ground for these semi skilled and unskilled people who want to go to that country so they are aware of both the good and the bad side of South Africa. You might be shielded away from these realities because you are able to live middle class and in the suburbs but for them this will be their reality.

Thanks!

that's bcus 90 percent of nigerians here are into selling of drugs, some out of frustration bcus of lack of job opportunities,no money, etc. I work for department of justice here in SA, 98 percent of court cases nigerians answer to are drug related and that is in almost every court house in SA everyday. So that's why naija people r termed drug lords. Its not an accusation, its reality.

Lets just do a little statistics here see how factual your numbers are. You say 90% of Nigerians in SA sell drugs based on your extrapolation from 98% Nigerian drug related cases in SA.

Estimated number of Nigerians in South Africa based on Consulate estimates.....about 400,000+

Take 90% of 400,000 this means that at total of number of 360,000 Nigerians in south Africa are drug dealers, pimps and the likes.

Do you see how st.upid that looks. If there were 360,000 so called drug dealers, pimps and the likes and lets say 30% had court cases,ti would mean that your justice department would be dealing with handling at least 100,000 cases of drug related crimes committed by Nigerians.

Lets say about 70% are prosecuted while 30% are able to slip through system, this would mean about 70,000 drug dealers are lavishing in SA African prisons.

This would lead me to believe that the SA government are not very smart seeing that the amount spent on a per person Nigerian in jail is more of a burden on their tax system that it would cost to just simply round them up and deport them.

Hmmm not very smart.

Please revise you stats!

you clearly are the one who lacks comprehension because the whole purpose of making those points is to prove that even with the chaos that goes in US people like you would still stay even if it means your salary being neck to neck with debts until you die. Killings based on race and ethnic group exist in the present day in USA is that enough reason for you to denounce US? People like you have been dying poor because you live to pay up your debts, does it make you denounce US? Despite the number of times you have been treated like a secondary citizen in the US by Americans did it ever make you denounce US?

Im just about done having this senseless discussion with you. Going back to the purpose of the thread

nonsense of the highest order!!!! when did you last saw a whole community in the US openly burning Africans alive and chanting, in full view of the whole world? stop making a fool out of yourself. there are crimes all over the world, and when these crimes are committed by a whole community against a particular community, then thats when we have a problem. trying to shift the problem and pointing fingers at others, in order to JUSTIFY what is happening in SA, is cheap, VERY CHEAP!

although i strongly oppose the foreign policies of the US (and many other countries in this world), i have never heard a whole community joyfully burning Africans alive over there... and the day they do, i will equally voice my concern too. in the mean time, stop trying to shift the focus and STAY ON THE SUBJECT of South Africa being a country where every few years some communities rise up and kill africans.

You can bet all you want my friend but because most Nigerians are concentrated in urban areas and you see a lot of them at one time doesn't mean they are that many in a country that boasts 40 million Black South Africans. South Africans know how many visas they process in Nigeria and how many people they let through into their borders.

98% of Nigerians fly into that country and the remaining use land borders. The are only estimated to be about 5 million foreigners in South Africa. Zimbabwe makes up about 3 million, SADC about 1 million and the rest of Africa the remaining 1 million.

Stop peddling false stats about 90% of Nigerians are drug dealers because you see a lot of them concentrated in one are.

I hope you are referring to the so called semi skilled who troop to South Africa in search of green pastures and not me directly.

If you follow this thread you will notice that most of the Nigerians looking for information about how to survive in South Africa are of the semi skilled type. They will usually overstay their invites and try to melt into the informal sector congregating in areas popularly inhabited by Nigerians in South Africa but will face Xenophobia and discrimination a lot more because even though they try to etch out a living they will be lumped together and refered to as "drug dealers" where ever they go.

Your so called doctors, accountants, engineers e.t.c are either transferred to SA from their companies, are well to do and can afford to finish their studies in SA universities as professional graduates and secure jobs or have enough money they brought over to invest in good start ups. and thats pretty much what i said lets not spoil it for those for actually want to come to SA with proper papers.

Anyone illegal immigrant will always face a harsh life whether in SA or in Sweden. Those who always enrol in school before looking for a decent job in foreign lands are not idi.ots. People shouldnt try cut corners to making it in life if they are not ready to endure the hardships.

And about being called a drug dealer, like i said Nigerians are labelled everywhere else in the world its something you have to learn to deal with and not be a pussssy about it. Stereotypes are everywhere and thats something u cant hide away from unless you actually stay back in your home country to protect your delicate little ears.

PAINGAIN:
that's bcus 90 percent of nigerians here are into selling of drugs, some out of frustration bcus of lack of job opportunities,no money, etc. I work for department of justice here in SA, 98 percent of court cases nigerians answer to are drug related and that is in almost every court house in SA everyday. So that's why naija people r termed drug lords. Its not an accusation, its reality.

This is news to me i dont know what to type honestly.

Mind blowing.

you clearly came on the thread with an intention to make SA look as bad as possible and thats wh you keep insisting on this.

So are you suggesting that those who got killed, injured or shops looted are engaged in illegal activities?

Is anyone stopping them from posting positive reviews of South Africa.

By the way where can we find South African forums where there are positive experiences South Africans have had with Nigerians. Surely there must be

Maybe you should start one here on Nairaland, see what type of comments you get no?

Living in a country without proper papers is illegal and most of the attacks happened to be targeted at most of those in that catergory. That is not to say others who are not part of that category did not fall victim.
And yes some where engaging in unlawful activities including trading without appropriate licences and residing in the Republic with expired visas.

i really dont know which point you are drivin at with this...? undecided i already some said who were not illegal immigrants including South Africans fell victim. So i dont see why you want to go over and over again just not to reach a sensible conclusion at the end of it.

Simple English. Aim was attacking illegal immigrants but the end result was even those who do not belong to that category were adversely affected
