Oshiomole's Bride: No Provision For Foreigner As First Lady by UncleLondon: 1:53am On May 14, 2015 |
No section in the constitution stops any Nigerian citizen from marrying a foreigner. In the next few days, a foreigner will be the first lady of Edo State overseeing the affairs of the state as the first woman of the state. She will be discharging her duties and recognized as the most powerful woman in the state handling and controlling sensitive issues. However, there is a friction ahead and no safe landing for the Ethiopian beau. The Friction: Constitutionally, No provision for non-citizens to take up some positions. This means the position of first lady is still vacant. It would not be right for a foreigner to maintain the title of a first lady and control other women born and bred in the land. |

Sometimes I wonder how some Nigerians think!!! Just last week, Nigerians were elected in the UK, here we are talking about someone who is going to occupy an unofficial position, why are we so archaic? No wonder there is hardly much progress in Africa, it's people like the OP, that use their archaic mentality to draw us back, yet we cry against Xenophobia.. SMH 7 Likes |

UncleLondon:The Ethiopian lady can be the First Lady of Edo state, but she can't run for elected office in Nigeria by virtue of her being a foreigner |
Re: Oshiomole's Bride: No Provision For Foreigner As First Lady by Ghost01(m): 7:56am On May 14, 2015 |
She becomes a citizen by marriage. Besides, I don't believe that the Nigerian constitution recognises first ladies to the extent of assigning them powers. |

OP please stop the misinformation, former Akwa Ibom first lady, Victor Attahs' Late wife Alison Attah was originally from the Caribbeans (Barbados or Bahamas I think, can't remember which of them). |
Re: Oshiomole's Bride: No Provision For Foreigner As First Lady by UncleLondon: 10:02am On May 14, 2015 |
clodd007: You know that's not true in totality, eventhough Buhari said he might scrap office of the first lady as there is no constitutional provisions for it. We all know this offices exist in various states and are being maintained by Government's fund and the status quo may not change in other states even if Aisha Buhari refuses to take up the office of the first lady. 1 Like |

@OP check your information before posting, don't just post for posting sake. Any female foreigner married to Nigerian man is automatically a Nigeria citizen by registration. Check Section 26 subsection 2a of Nigeria constitution for more knowledge. |

cy4cent: People seem not to get it. The Nigerians elected into UK only had Nigerian names, some are half castes with white parents and born in UK. There's really not much basis for comparison as they have lived long in the UK to understand the twists and turns of the economy and the topography of the land. Citizenship by marriage is not automatic. It takes time to mature. 1 Like 1 Share |

simplex2:Yes, one can be a citizen by marriage. And she is legally "eligible" to be Edo First Lady. However, one can only hold elected office in Nigeria via citizenship by birth. Thus, if she has any plans of running for office, she should bury such thoughts. ^^ They are getting married; to have a union, to love and to share, to be a better-half of each other; for love and companionship: Not for any elected office! Why must it be for first-ladyship or political office? |

cy4cent: I know where you are coming from but we must all try to understand the Op of this thread. Thank God you made a reference to UK last general election in which Nigerians were elected into parliament, that very election is as good as what the Op is trying to tell us. Those Nigerians(those elected in the last election in UK) whom you referred to are nothing but pure British citizens but Nigerians by the virtue of their parents' nationality. The same UK you referred to ll not even give you a mere medication if you are a foreigner without your medical insurance. The same UK ll not even consider you for a mere cleaning job/c councillor f you are a foreigner except you have legalise your immigration status to either permanent residence or British citizens. 2 Likes |
