Chuka does not identify himself as being Nigerian, even though he accepts the affiliation as part of his roots. He is Black British. He is also more Anglo-Irish than he is Nigerian. Nevertheless he is also a very humble and decent guy. craleonic: 1 Like |

Whatever his reasons are for withdrawing now, he should have taken them all into consideration before declaring to contest in the first instance. It is better to think deeply before acting/speaking then to hastily act/speak and have to withdraw. 4 Likes |

Too early, too green, and lacks the charisma/eloquence/brain to win the people over, anyway. Who will vote for a Blairite that's more or less ToriesLite in his outlook, especially with how messed up the Labour Party is right now? The party's traditional base is in disarray, while they also need to appeal to more English voters - since they have lost Scotland completely. Ditto how confused the whole party is right now with no direction and no ideas on what to actually embrace - traditional left or ideals of new Labour which is ToriesLite. And minorities in the UK are inconsequential in determining election (esp black people who make up just 3% and over 60% of eligible/registered black voters don't even vote). Even if he were to win Labour's leadership, white people out here won't vote for a nyggah. They don't even want a black person to read prime time news, why would they want a black person to be the PM? Folks don't even know how racist the UK is. Yes, they smile with you and act all fake, but once you turn ya back, these folks might actually be the most racist folks on the planet. They already gave folks London, everything else is non-negotiable and they will always remind you in a subtle way. Chuka was just wasting his time before and Labour was also about to self-destruct. Good that both woke up at the right time. 4 Likes |

Clearly has skeletons in his closet!! He's a quitter. He walks off interviews and now he decides he can't face the leadership contest. He's all show (quite literally) and no go! BTW, I wonder how long the 'girlfriend' will last now he's given up If he can't stand scrutiny or attention should he really be an MP in the first place? He has always been chippy and defensive, demanding special treatment wherever he goes-good riddance. |

feedthenation: You forgot to mention Daily Mail. Chuka Ummuna is well hated by the British public. All you have to do is go to any of the major UK newspapers online and read the comments made about him on any story where he has made the headline. He stood no chance at all winning Labour leadership and even if he did, that would have sunk the party further. I'm glad he has stepped down. Dunno what he was thinking nominating himself in the first place. 1 Like |

ShymmexOBE:The same thing was said about Obama but what happened. If and when he decides to be British PM, his party will be voted for on merit and not whether is it being led by a black man. We started from the bottom, now we're here. |

Afam4eva: They wouldn't even let a Scottish man, Gordon Brown, win an election...but you think they will actually vote for a black person? English voters hold the ace, and they're mostly conservatives. A black person isn't even allowed to read prime time news, apart from late/early-morning news cos of the same people. You have to understand the dynamics of things and UK isn't America, and will never be. He has a better chance becoming the Mayor of London, than PM. Blacks are ever present in America, even way before Obama. And Obama came in at the right time, for a purpose by some powers bigger than him - those were the people who pushed the button. Then the two system of government are different. Ditto Obama's charisma, eloquence and a lot of things Chuka lacks. That's just the reality. And he's too green - coupled with the timing in which the Labour Party is in disarray. The only chance Labour has right now is for the conservatives to self-destruct, with Labour positioning itself in a more attractive position, for English voters. They tried that with New Labour and Tony Blair destroyed it himself with his Iraq/Afghanistan war with George Bush. So they need another "joker" like that one, and Chuka lacks what Blair and his gang came with back then - Tony Blair was Obama before Obama when it comes to eloquence, articulation, charisma and swaying folks over with the power of the tongue. Err, let's say Chuka hypothetically becomes Labour leader - immigration and son of an immigrant becoming the PM alone is enough to make him lose in England. And even folks from the far left, which happens to be Labour's base, don't even like him cos he's more of a middle-class guy than working-class. 2 Likes |

It's funny he announced his candidacy just few days ago and he's already saying he's under pressure. I'm guessing he had skeletons in his cupboard and he knew they would be revealed very soon. For the guy who said he is gay being gay is not a crime in the UK |

ShymmexOBE:I agree that the UK and US are not the same as the latter is a more open society but never say never. It may be more difficult for Ummuna to become PM compared to Obama becoming US president but its still possible considering the fact that they currently have nothing to lose. |
Re: Chukwa Umunna Withdraws From Labour Leadership Race by lazsnaira(m): 1:42pm On May 15, 2015 |
ShymmexOBE: Beautiful analysis I must say! But are you suggesting blacks should forget about becoming PM in Britain as they would never be voted for by the white majority? Or are you saying that Umunna should, for the time being, concentrate on growing his political clout amongst the whites, so as to return stronger and better accepted to contest for the British PM? I would agree with you on the latter, if that is your position. |

Re: Chukwa Umunna Withdraws From Labour Leadership Race by Nobody: 1:52pm On May 15, 2015 |
Afam4eva: Yes, anything is possible...but he'll need some powers behind him on the level Obama had; the right timing; and the need to the UK to project a different image (especially with the press/media) for him to have a chance. An endorsement from Tony Blair was the last thing he needed - that was a kiss of death. The timing isn't right. And the UK doesn't need a different image at the moment. Ditto how the Tories control British press. Even on a blank paper on where the votes are going to come from - black people are barely 3% of the population (mostly concentrated in London and Birmingham), and over 60% of black folks don't vote, though most black folks support the Labour party. Asians are heavily involved in both Labour and Tories (two Asians made David Cameron's new cabinet). Merger with SNP in Scotland. he won't win heavily in Northern Englandcos he doesn't care about working class and that's one of Labour's strongest bases (with the midlands which they keep losing). And the South is anti-immigration, anti-Labour, anti-EU etc.. Obama came when Americans were done with the republicans and the woman, Hilary Clinton, he contested against had her own baggage with her husband. And despite all the powers pushing Obama, his attributes, and international appeal, it was a close race. But he won it. Then he had to contest the election against a John McCain who's more or less George Bush-esque war hawk and an obnoxious Sarah Palin. And the victory wasn't even a landslide victory - apart from the swing states he won starting with Iowa. Two different climes and timing. 2 Likes |

ShymmexOBE: You are spot on Bro! I can speak for the Scots, myself inclusive If chuka ummuna had emerged as labour leader, they won't get more than 2,000 votes in scotland. Guaranteed !!!! And yes, the labour party needs scotland for them to have any hope of governing UK again. |
Re: Chukwa Umunna Withdraws From Labour Leadership Race by Nobody: 1:58pm On May 15, 2015 |
lazsnaira: Right now, it's a pipe dream - unless the conservatives self-destruct. And even if it were to happen, with the tangent the country is going, and arrival of SNP in national politics - a black person from the conservatives stands a better chance, but the person must be supremely anti-black (a coconut). The type of person with a black skin, but everything else has to be white and he/she must be racist to himself/herself (self-hater). |

ShymmexOBE: that disgraceful shyte didnt happen in my constituency. my constituency elected the only labour MP in scotland and SNP came out third or fourth in that zone. my MP is well loved, active, very visible, and does the job he is being paid to do. so i wasnt really shocked that he won. there's still hope for labour in scotland. they just need to pick the right leader. even the current leader of the scottish labour party SUCKS! |
Re: Chukwa Umunna Withdraws From Labour Leadership Race by lazsnaira(m): 2:18pm On May 15, 2015 |
ShymmexOBE: Lol I think Umunna fits into that self-hate description of yours because I don't see him doing blacks any favour if he becomes the PM, other than the pride blacks would take in identifying with his skin colour and lineage. Well, perhaps its very early for him but someday in the nearer future I am certain British white majorities would want to experiment with a leadership of the exotic kind, a taste of something unfamiliar like Americans have done with Obama and it would be achieved with or without the Conservatives. At least, Britain must one day try to tell the world that they are no racist barbarians who wouldn't let people of colour take the lead. Americans has done it & the Britain I know envies everything America. So maybe not now, but then not far from now. But a black man will rule Britain. |
