She felt shy as they sat beside each other. She didn't want to draw close to him before but when the bar owner had tried to give them some privacy, he asked that Zainab draw close to peter. It was as if he would do something wrong to her. Perhaps rape her in the presence of the bar owner, with the bar very open - both windows and door. She was afraid and it hung on her body like leprosy. Yes, she might have had some impression about boys in general but Peter would be different with just the little chat they've had. She hadn't had the opportunity of staring into his eyes. She rather had a dodgy eyes. He might swallow her up, she felt. Timidity of the mind was more required in such cases than of the body. She hoped she'll get used to him as time goes on. “Zainab, look at me na! Why are you staring into space. Not as if I'm a ghost or someone whose eyes had been plucked out by a vulture.” He laughed, thinking she would too but she rather scratched her neck. She felt uncomfortable but she managed a smile afterwards. “I'm sorry Peter,” she paused to take a deep breath, then she spoke on. “You know, it feels so strange!” She looked towards the door. Away from where she was talking to him. In her heart, she had what her plans were. She knew she doesn't have to make everything go too easy so he wouldn't later see her as someone who is cheap. Someone he could take for granted in the future. But it feels she was taking it too far. She would rather had not come than displaying some shroud attitude. Peter stood up and put his two hands in his side pockets. He sighed heavily. In his mind, he thought extensively of what to do. This might be a wrong move he had taken. F^ck it!!! He shouldn't have stoop so low. Zainab wasn't of his standard. No, she was, but she was trying to make life hard for him. He couldn't stand this test if she meant it that way, yet - he wasn't sure if she even likes him. “Okay then! I think you shouldn't have responded than come here,.................... Goodbye,” He was about leaving the door when Zainab grabbed his hand and he turned back. That was a scene. She was seated and he, standing. They both looked into each other's eyes for long. No one could break the silence. Two people lost in thought. Only heaven knew what they might be thinking about. Peter's face was lashed at every point with surprises. He didn't know what that meant but he was hopeful, joyous in his heart. He might have scored a point with trying to walk out on her. Zainab on the other hand was so ashamed of her courage. She stared at him with mixed feelings. Though she was starting to love Peter's manliness but didn't want to let it appear to him as such. Then it changed. She shouldn't have held him back. It impeded on her own pride as a woman. Her dignity was slapped in the face by herself - like she used her own hands to hurt herself. It felt as though she would be the one to toast him, the one to be the director of affairs if they eventually became friends. Beads of sweat were starting to form across her forehead. Then it drooled down a path that had been made without her consent by her nose. She wanted to swipe at it but she let it flow. As if it were flowing the words in her heart. The longing to be this guy's boyfriend. “I'm sorry for trying to walk out on you. It's just that,............. See Zainab, I've been stuck in thought about you. I had discusssed about you every single day of my life with my friends since the first time I saw you! I've had countless - sleepless night since then. I started thinking absurdly. And now, when I could find the time to express my thought to you,” he paused. It seemed he had been talking for long. 4hours all in all. His mouth was dry now and bitter. His tongue were starting to long for water but it wasn't available. He didn't even care if it were. He was determined to use all the saliva in his mouth today, only if it would yield result - and make Zainab be his. “I love you Zainab” he finally said the words that made her big eyeballs (crayfish eyes) glow. They bulged out of their socket like when Tom and Jerry had a nail-eyes because they saw the other person doing what wasn't expected of him. However, hers wasn't much of less expectant but it met her unaware. She looked up to him now. The fears and shyness had crept away and there was certain thing that was starting to locate their way into her mind. It was hurrying with enormous speed. Bringing along with it what would be the deadliest thing she might ever say, ever had said in her life. She felt it now and it nulged her with great displeasure. Should she let it out of her in a lash? Then, her tears gland wanted to betray her - as they were starting to work in their factory when they should be having an off day or a rest. This betrayal would make her forsake her tears gland and she would never shed tears again in her life. Not even the scold of a teacher, parents or infliction of pain would make her shed a single tears again. Before it finally burst out, she let out what she felt about what he had said. “I love you too Peter,” then her body was trying to find a balance between hysteria and shyness. Peter's face lightened up. He wasn't expecting a quick reply. He had also given it a shot, expecting anything that was coming - good or bad reply. He had heard girls giving boys slap when they tried to woo them and he had been expecting worst if it should come to it. Perhaps he was a lucky dude who had met Zainab's head at home. Because she wasn't all that okay when it comes to `disgracing' males. Surely, he was `Goodluck' today. Hadn't Zainab left her friends cause of him? “Thank you so much. God! I'm one of the happiest human on earth today!” He went back to sit. So, his friends had been right all along - Zainab was not taken. He was definitely going to be a king in their midst the next day. “Bros, abeg show o!” Peter called out with honey plattered on his tongues and in his voice. Zainab wasn't sure how Peter felt, yet she saw in his face like someone who had just been given a new bride. “Yes, na me be this. Hmmmmmm! Pero pero!!! I trust you my guy! See as your face dey shine. Sure say the babe don bless you this afternoon,” the bar owner teased and Peter winked back. “Abeg, serve us Ice-cream.” Peter requested. The man went towards the Ice-cream freezer and started scooping it into a cup. “I sure say na Strawberry she dey take. Her face resemble am well well.” Zainab giggled. She was happy. Her heart were filled with some joy and here was a clown in their presence - who knew her flavour. She wondered if Peter might know too. That would be an added advantage as she would always ask him to guess almost every time. Suddenly, a girl ran into the bar. Nobody knew how she had the knowledge Zainab was there. Anyway, there was nowhere in the world that gossip weren't. They always know about you, in and out and would trail your whereabouts no matter how far you went. May be they worked for secret agents underworld. “Zainab Zainab Zainab!” She panted. Zainab scurried off the seat. Her demeanor had changed in no time. What news was this one bringing and why was she in such a hurry. She looked out of the door may be anything was in her pursuit. Or it was just a normal game they played called `Catch and play.' “Your friends,........” She chuffed again. Peter and the bar owner had turned to face the intruder now. What does she have to say about her friends that she couldn't just say once. Men don't love suspense the way women do - so they hurried her up. “What had happened?” “They, they,..........Kidnappers! `Area-boys'” she couldn't just stop the whiff. “Ehn” Zainab exclaimed. “What Area-boys? Are they alright? Where are they?” Zainab system had been disorganized with that statement. The girl didn't wait to say more, she ran off. Zainab fell back to her seat. Her head rested against the wooden. Was she to run out like a man person chasing ghost? She was numb. “What have I done? What have I done?” Peter looked at her. He was inquisitive. His gaze were foul as though he derided her for what she might have done - that he thought was bad. The bar owner was now lost. The last english or statement he could understand was `Kidnappers.' Now, the remaining english were unclear to understand. Only thing he heard now was `done, done, done!!!' “What do you mean what you've done?” Peter asked. She didn't reply as she stood up and scuttled out of the bar. Peter was surprised. Had this girl planned bad for her friends? Kidnappers? `no girl is a saint' he thought. “I must know wetin dey happen!” He finally said to no one in particular as he ran after her. The bar owner just stared at them with `wetin dey happen' look on his face. |

00000000000000000000000000000000000000000 39. “God don catch your father this evening,” Baba 70 snarled and ran towards a boys quarter close to the Government College Ikoyi. He lifted one or two things up here but couldn't find what he searched for. He scud sideways still searching for nothing and his eyes caught a crate of long forgotten 7up bottles. He drew one out and smashed the rotund part on the wall with agility and one would marvel at such expertise. He was left with little - just the narrow part that looked like the neck of the bottle and some uneven ridges that detached from the other part of the bottle. He held it in his hand, tightly. The pointed edges piercing out as he launched to attack his victim. Bala, the head boy and company had met their long awaited opponent finally now, as they raced back from the bus-stop - at the back of the Government College Ikoyi. The head boy looked unsteady at the first instance he saw Baba 70 racing to locate something but his dignity could, would not let him rip for his life. He had stood on one spot to know what Baba 70's intentions were as he searched for something among the rubble. Then he heard the sound, `gboos!!!' Who go wait. Izu went closer to Bala, and stood on level with him, knocking his head against him. His face frowned to his forehead. Then Bala who was so vexed this time did the wrong thing. He pushed Izu away yet Izu didn't fall. The next thing Izu did was to deck Bala continuously as his anger welled. Bala tried to react but wasn't clear to throw a punch, the best thing was to just keep dodging or guarding. The cane he had held had been nowhere to be found. And what if it were? Would he be trying to flog someone that was wrecking him punches? That would have been a joke told at the night of madness at S. Williams theatre of the absurd. There was no `Senior' Bala's notion any longer, - trying to beat Izu with a cane because he was his junior. They were now of same manpower, standing equal to each other without sentiment or bias. Bala's hand couldn't throw a single punch even with his height. All he did was to guard and move out of position, but it was getting too much for him to handle. Yet, he couldn't run away, Izu was riding him. He wasn't used to such boxing. He preferred `monkey fight' where one person would have or try to throw the other and the victorious would inflict the wrath of anger on the trolled. He would have to beg for mercy to gain release from the pin-down and constant banging of the head against the floor. Sand-filling the mouth or bouts of punches that would render the teeth all worn-out, broken nose and swollen eyes. However, that sort of fight was mostly associated with women except in core tribes of the Yorubas,' Igbos', and partly Hausas,' who called it local wrestling. This scene was of no village square or gathering of such fight to know who the strongest warrior of the tribe/village was. The fight of Lagosian was boxing, exception to those exiled 'Oyoist' who `are' hooligans that had constituted nuisance to Lagos by using bottle at any slight fight. It was their power. He bent and stampeded forward. Cling Izu unaware at the knee and held his trousers tight. He tried to throw Izu but he stood rooted to the ground like a coconut root. They seemed to have multiplied and taken channels at various places beneath the earth surface. Izu didn't stop trying to punch him even when he wasn't at arms reach anymore. He aimed endlessly for Bala's chin, still trying to make sure, he couldn't be thrown. With effective and determined calculations, Bala lifted him, not really high as he was so much tons of 2 sacks of fermented cassava. Thud!!! Was the next thing that sounded on the ground as if a spaceship had crashed landed on the spot. The ground shook. Bala pounced to him, to pin him down and teach him a lesson. *** As the others saw a charging Baba 70 running towards them, they took to their heels yet Baba 70 followed in hot pursuit. He trailed the head boy most importantly. There was three ways which led to the Wahab School building. It was either one took the Ikoyi gate and walk some steps or one took the boulevard outside the complex walls or passed the back of the boys quarters' beside the GCI. No one with his right senses could, would have tried running away from this madman and face the bus-stop where greater danger was laying ambush for one. None of it was worth facing as both might lead to bloodbath or even the loss of life - if one wasn't careful. Each person founded his bearing. Two people jumped to climb the bridge and crossed to the other side of the bridge beside the Foreshore Osborne Estate. They didn't even check may be there was a vehicle coming, they `barrel`ed'. The head boy on his part seemed to have had a tyre or two fixed underneath his feet within a minute as he was running at top speed towards their school gate. He had run so far, his legs flying and jerking in the air that he didn't realise no one was in his pursuit again. Baba 70 had suddenly turned the scene into a joke. He stood halfway laughing at the coward of a head boy who raced along, away from ghost chase. He laughed and laughed and laughed that he didn't know when he sat on the tarred road, - tears coming out of his eyes. He was still laughing and hadn't figured out the head boy was nowhere in sight again. He had entered the gate. Then a car horn brought him back to reality when he remembered Bala was with Izu, wrestling/boxing. |

Bala was now seating over Izu. He beat, punched, slap and did everything possible at Izu but few punches got to him, as he was blocking and guarding with his arm. Suddenly, his power rejuvenated and he struggled to push Bala away. Bala didn't give up. He continued throwing punches, elbows, slap. Then Izu received a bad one to his nose and his power were like Samson and he pushed Bala away. Stood up suddenly as if he had been stung by a killer bee. He scurried towards a struggling Bala on the floor and the first blow that brushed Bala's mouth was horrific. It brushed Bala's mouth to the side and blood forcefully spat out. He was so angry now. He knew he's had a broken nose when Bala was on him and the only thing he could do was to finish this Bala for his injuries. The blow to his mouth had rendered Bala very weak, yet he didn't want to plead for mercy. Izu shouted offensively “Arrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh!!!” and his blood ran to his head. He felt a shock as if he had drank `ogorogoro' and his strength gathered courage. His eyes were red now, so red they looked like a buffalo's eyes. It could lit a cigarette when focused on it for a long time. He charged like a wild bull. Punched at a helpless Bala who couldn't defend himself again. He appeared to have not taken notice of his victim's lack of defence. He was out of this world. His soul seemed to have surfaced at the altar of the devil. He didn't even know he was shouting now. His anger thundered loudly with his voice. “Arhh!! You no go do am again” amidst heavy punches. He shouted like a drug addict. “God! Arh! I go kill you today!!!” And he was determined. His veins contracted more and more and seemed to have all concerted at his fist. He was out of control and Bala was dying. Nobody had dared to come closer. They felt Izu had suddenly gone insane with the way he was shouting and inflicting his blows on his victim. His hands were a working machine, they were so fast. “Arh, Izu, abeg wait wait abeg. Leave am!” Baba 70 struggled to break into the crowd. He knew Izu could kill Bala now. Izu had seen a stone at his side and decided he was going to use it on Bala when Baba 70 grabbed his hand and forced the stone out of it. “Leave me alone,” he roared like a gorilla who was fighting invaders off his territory. “See, you don nearly kill am. Him no dey breath again,” Baba 70 was now afraid. He had never been so afraid in his entire life like he was now. Although, he was a wicked tout too but the last he could do was to kill someone. The only thing he did was to mark his opponent with bottle and that was all. He saw the fire in Izu's eyes. Someone who didn't even know what he was doing again. He would kill Bala with that stone if he had been allowed to use it on him. Person wey don chop beating for soldiers hand!!! “Abeg make una help me abeg,” he pleaded to the crowd that had gathered. Peter and Zainab had stopped running towards the bus-stop once they saw people gathered looking at something. Zainab who was so concerned about her friends had been told not to even brave it to get to the bus-stop as it was bloody. It was just few minutes ago, the police had arrived there but the place wasn't still safe to go as the hooligans were trying to have a show off with the police. She started shedding uncontrolled tears now. May be it was meant for her friends she knew she could have rescued if she had went home with them. But seriously, it would mean three of them would have been kidnapped. She was supposed to be thanking her stars, perhaps it was the love that had developed among them that made her think otherwise. She hated herself for allowing her friends to go away without her. How would she explain it to their parents if they called and asked about them? Would she tell them she had left them for one so called Peter, who she wanted to have her first love with? What sort of friend was she to do that? And how would she reconcile back to them if they were later released? Yet, she didn't know if they would be rescued. They might never come back again. She might never see them again base on the stories she's heard about kidnappers. She quickly rebuked her thoughts. `God, please let them be set free. I don't know if I can live without them,' she prayed in her mind. She was emotional again. Was it about the friends she just thought about or her classmate Izu, who was about killing Senior Bala. “Please help him,” she sobbed, her eyes were now filled with tears, snort ran down her nose. “Please.” Yet no one had been able to help until Baba 70 had come. Peter joined a group of boys that decided to join Baba 70 to hold Izu and pull him off a dying Bala. They all gripped the madman yet he struggled to break loose. Baba 70, only God knew may be he had done the job of an assassin before - he gave Izu some shocking blade of the palm-knack on both shoulders and Izu became weak. It was as if he had been shot a sleeping injection. He was lame and tired. It was when they had set him down at one side before he could speak again. “Omo, we gaz rush this guy go hospital o,” Peter suggested as he looked at Bala on the floor. His face was stained with blood. Zainab's mind drifted back and rested on Peter. She saw everything in this guy. Look how he was trying to help. She saw he was cute and striking. He had the brain of a complete science student who could think at a second or two. I can't wait to love him and think endlessly about him day and night! `oh God, please forgive my evil thoughts' she retrained herself once she remembered her friends. Should I even be thinking this way when my friends are in kidnappers den? “Omo, the guy don dey lose blood o. See him nose and mouth. Help me carry am abeg.” Someone else who had helped to retrained Izu said and bent to lift Bala through the shoulder. “Sharp sharp. Make we carry am go that hospital wey dey inside Ikoyi Primary School (IPS),” Baba 70 left Izu and hurried to join those who had lifted Bala off the floor. They rushed to the hospital and were lucky the hospital was still opened at this time of the day when almost all students and staffs had all gone home. “What happened to him?” The nurse at the reception hurried towards the hurrying students. She quickly directed them to the treatment room at the reception. “Na fight him and him friend dey fight o” “You mean him friend? Na wa o! Student sha!” The nurse exclaimed and hurried to get the Doctor. “Please, we only need two people to stay at the reception,” the Doctor said as he entered swiftly into the ward. Some 30minutes later, he came out to inform the two people, Baba 70 and Peter, Bala was okay and had been treated well. He just needs to rest for some few more minutes and he would be ready to go home. “Please, can I get the name of the person he fought with?” The Doctor requested, removing his hand-gloves, disposing them and bringing out a pen from his chest pocket. He noted the name down and went his way. Bala's friends who had deserted him when Baba 70 had broke the bottle were now back to see their friend when they had learnt what had happened from someone. Exception was the head boy who had decided, he didn't want to see a determined Baba 70. He was a handsome boy and wasn't ready to take a risk of receiving a mark on his face. They later took Bala home and Izu's fate was left with the Doctor who no one knew what he was going to do with his name. ******** You don't need PVC to do this one on monday.
