40. The bus rattled along in full speed, offsetting the sand on the road. Dust rose up to the air in a magical form, as if a magician was performing some `the more you look, the less you see.' The vision of the bus was blurred to the bike(motorcycle) that was in its pursuit. Then sharply, the bus took a left turn to the Cameron street and zoomed ahead. Fowls (hens) who had been picking with their beak flew up, landed and cocked/crackled - racing away from danger. The street was deserted as it was well known - Ikoyi was a quiet place. An area were lovers would enjoy the bliss of ever falling in love. Lips would come in contact and before knowledge, breeze/wind would blow into lovers ears to tickle their sensation. There would be hurried movement of trying to pull each other's dresses; remove his boxers and her pants and bra. Then with total privacy the environment offered, the thrusting would commence and moans would play rhythm to it. After they might have had a good taste of each other, let's say for an hour - they would have no clue how the breeze/wind and silence of the surrounding would have drifted them into slumber. Yes, the place was so quiet and deserted. The people who stayed there were mostly europeans or those Nigerians who had made it big. They were only at home in the evening and if they were travellers, they wouldn't be around till it was weekend. Only housekeepers and gatemen would be left at home to do whatever they want. You'll see most of them taking `ogogoro' sellers into their boys-quarters to have a `quicky.' If they were lucky to meet a very generous lady - she might decide to die there. “Na here I go die o, arh!!!, you sabi f^ck well well,” they would say as if they were Mario. As the bus sped on, dogs barked at nothing. May be they barked at the dust; only them knew but many held the believe dogs often see ghost or bad things and react. Most of our grannies often tell us “Dogs only bark at people with evil thoughts or evil people.” David's bike appeared from the corner as it turned sharply as if it were a power bike used at F1 racing. It sped on to catch up with the bus which doesn't even look it would catch. There was about 120yards setting them apart. The sound of the bike reignited `Voom' and the man gave a more determined chase - as the road wasn't as bad as that they had just got out from. Gatemen in the area who had heard the sound of speed and the dogs bark, opened their gates to stare at what was happening. Is this a race course? Some covered their noses as the dust spread to where they stood watching. Other gatemen who had in the past witnessed or had heard about armed robbers; police pursues; and events of stray bullets didn't come out from their gatehouses. Many of them peeped at a slight opening. They were left wondering what the chase was all about. They pondered wide about possibility of a robbery attack somewhere or somehow, something related to it. Yet, they couldn't guess much. This, was no police pursuing the bus. Might be some LASTMA, they thought. On the bike, David was thinking why he hadn't collected the jazz his priest had wanted to give him before coming to Lagos. He remembered the priest had said it was “Agbe'fo.” That is, a jazz that make one disappear. He regret why he hadn't collected it. He wouldn't have needed to chase this bus on a bike. Might have just been for him to say some few words or do some few signs and he would find himself inside the bus, right beside the driver. Although the priest had explained to him very well it was a protective charm but he turned it down saying, the ones he had given him was protective enough - as there was `chuk and bounce and infliction ring.' The priest had said it was part of it. He mostly did the charm for drivers, especially Danfo drivers who embark on inter-state journey. The charm was meant for emergency, in case the bus lost control or caught fire, the driver would have disappeared before there was a crash or explosion. It will have to be only the passengers that would be victims of the crash except someone as fortified as the driver was, was also on the bus. He bit his lips as he held on tight to the bike. He had told the priest he was not going to be a Danfo driver or even a driver at all in Lagos. He was going to school and he rejected it. “If toh say I don collect this thing now, I for use am this kind time o!” He regretted. Once the driver had started to ride on a tarred road, he saw Fatimah and Mariam so tiny from afar through the back wind-screen. They didn't know who was on the bike as it was still very far away but they could see a bike was chasing the bus. A certain sense of rescue came to their mind but they were still not at rest. “Help! Help!! Help!!!” They shouted at the top of their voices yet it was all enveloped in the four corners of the bus. They knocked, clapped/slapped and did everything at the wind-screen with their palms, fist but all were ineffective. It couldn't stop the bus running or the person from kidnapping them. Their faces were completely full of tears, sweats and snorts. They had become so soon, some 4 or 5 years old baby - crying all out when they were pinched or were being bitten by ants, they couldn't express themselves to their parents. Their eyeballs seemed to have adjusted, move out of their usual places. They were swollen due to, too much of tears. Seriously, they had both 'pee`d' on the body. They were so young and had never experienced such before. It was the highest form of traumatic torture you could give girls of their age. Only heaven know how they would survive it! |

“My mummy o! Arh! I'm dead!!!” Mariam exclaimed as she throat-sobbed, kept silent for a moment. Her heart were so much racing as though they had to meet-up with a hospital deadline of pumping blood into her heart. As she tried to inhale or take back the mucus that zigzag down her nostrils - finding a road to her mouth, she swallowed it. Then tears appeared through the side of her eyes. They formed another new path, as the old ones they took before had been dried, about two. As they strolled down, they concoct with sweats and mucus and straight, some went into her mouth again through the side while others find their way down and hung beneath her jaw - waiting to fill a little and then drop-off. The once humoured Mariam had suddenly become so frightened, no signs of those jokes she tried to talk to her friends with - were on her face. They had left her, betrayed her so much in this time of grief. Fatimah had also kept mute for some seconds to think. She had heard many evil things about kidnappers. How they would starve someone to death. How they would feed people without nutritious meals. She exclaimed in her mind “I don't want to be starved or given such food.” She was engaged in thoughts afterwards she had sobbed. She remembered also, how people had said they usually sell kidnapped victims to `ritualist.' Arh, Allah!!! She sobbed, so this is how I would end my life. What if they decided to rape us? She thought and wanted to say it out to Mariam's ears but she couldn't, she broke down and started weeping again - which also reinforced (`gingered') Mariam's grief. They were both virgins and had promised Allah they would remain so till they got married. They had frequently heard about keeping ones dignity at Mosque, quran classes. They heard, many respects were attached to it and one would be free from the wrath of Allah, so long one didn't go against that practice. It was expected of them to avoid all occasions that might lead or trap them into losing their virginity. Most of it was for them to dress properly and not as all those Christians friends they kept would dress, revealing their bodies. They've heard their Imam preached so much, Christians were mostly the example that were used. Yet, Fatimah didn't understand why it should be so. Can't they just keep out of using this people? At least, Allah didn't say you should castigate or judge others. She had most times, rebuked such defarmation of personality/religion. She herself had fallen in love with Clinton, a Christian. Notwithstanding, they (Fatimah and her friends) usually put on their `Hijabs' wherever they went. “If I had known, I should have listened to my parents and got married when I finished my Junior School,” Fatimah wept. Her words weren't that clear, it was only Mariam that could hear her. She heard her clearly and once again, she became emotional and was only able to speak when she had got hold of herself. “Fatimah, please don't tell me we are having the same thought!” Mariam's hands that rested on the windscreen slid down a little and sweats followed their trails. Her uniforms was so soaked now but not as Fatimah's. Fatimah's sweat-glands were more active than Mariam's. May be because Fatimah on her part was light and fair in complexion, soft skin. You couldn't hold her hands for just few seconds before you would feel them wet, as though you had dug them into a bowl of water. But there was often times some coldness in it that got you so much attached to her beauty. She was a river goddess. “I hope it's not rape? Arh, Allahu!!! My Iman, do not put me to shame.” Iman in Islamic theology denotes a believer's faith in the metaphysical aspects of Islam. Its most simple definition is the belief in the six articles of faith, known as arkān al-īmān. The term Iman has been delineated in both the Quran as well as the Hadith of Gabriel. According to the Quran, Iman must be accompanied by righteous deeds (perfection or excellence) and the two together are necessary for entry into Paradise. Keeping virginity till marriage was also sub-requirement for females. Fatimah within a split seconds of hearing Mariam say the exact thing she had thought, went on her buttocks. Her legs were folded sideways. When her skirt moved, it left some wet patches on the ply-wood. The driver who was also the hooligan that had kidnapped them was now alert someone was in his pursuit. He saw the bike through the side mirror - racing towards him. There was still much distance between them, yet he couldn't stop checking, glancing into the mirror. He peered backwards sharply to know may be Fatimah and Mariam were still there and face forward again. He thought about what he was going to do to the girls. He hadn't come to really kidnap them but events had played well in his mind and he took advantage of it. Someone who is idle would surely be led into one bad thought or the other. He had decided unwillingly to just go away with the girls. Surely, he was going to find what to do with them when he consults one of his friends. Then with differing thought, something went to his head at once and his brain responded to it. His nervous system seemed to have transmitted them to where it was required in the body. His bloods ran through his veins like water would run through a pipe - and his pen1s responded to mere thought stimuli. Wow! He had thought about bleeping these `smallies' as he often called the girls of their age he had many romantic affairs with at the garage. They were girls who had ran out of home or one or two circumstances had led them to start a rugged life in the garage. “And all these kind `smallies' dey sweet o!!!” He thought. His face was starting to receive joy that had once departed him when he saw the bike at first, yet his mind was focused on his driving. “Their yansh dey always tight wella,” he savoured the unseen and his joy-stick glorified itself in his boxers as he moved thighs to allow it pluck out the boxers he was on, right into the jean trousers. When he shook his head in excitement, then it struck him, he didn't know the area he was driving at. He hope he wouldn't get to the end of the road, as he increased gear. |
