Proceed with caution. I don't know but if they can print more naira and hold down inflation and whittle down the influence of the dollar it may work out. From the little I know.

The problem will hv in NIG ab initio is leakage due to corruption . Printing more naira is risky where dia is corruption cos d money may nt be used to foster production den dat may lead to inflation . Austerity measure is also risky wia dia is corruption too cos little will get to poor. What we need is to tackle corruption which is an economic sabotage , diversify d economy using comparative advantage principle and ensure good taxation esp progresive taxation for now.

Are you an economist?

How do we now fight corruption?

V hard. If we ve a good security and judiciary system dat is truely independent den we ve hope . But strategically, govt can also provide a system dat prevents corruption . Just like asking how to do u stop cheating in universities. All comes down to the question of is d executive arm of govt really serious with tackling corruption?
Re: NYSC 2015 Batch B House by Physika(f): 8:59pm On May 18, 2015
Other options are:

1: Devalue the naira, this will help to woo foreign investors.

2: Impliment the closed economy concept for a stipulated period, say for two decades.

3: etc...

I do think the people high up are considering various ways to alleviate the current spate.

Would arresting & jailing people stop corruption? Because, the last time I checked, people still smuggle drugs to Malaysia despite the punishment being a "capital" one

We hv already done dat and it didnt work, infact it will hardly work for a country like NIG dat depends largely on importation of raw materials and technology. It will cause shut down of firms and unemployment . For closed economy, we shdnt even think of it . Even USA run an open economy .

There is no country without crime . What most govts think of is how to prevent and alleviate crime and also prosecute culprite . U cant stop justice cos it is d only way to deter pple frm commiting crime .

Most mport activities 2 d best f my knowledg ar run by individuals wit d sole aim f makin profit wit little or no contribution 2 d economy at larg nd diz knda practices ar growin anualy.

Dz means dat mportatn cn b reduced nd consequently shut off on d long run. IMO

I disagree with u dia. Our importation is caused by deficit in production locally to satisfy the demand . Dnt blame it on individuals . Lets use Petrol and Cars for example with our refineries and auto mobile companies working do u think d importers will make much. We are a consuming nation so we cant help it dan to import to satisfy our wants.

Ur point z same as mine. U say thr z a deficit in productn henc d reason fr mportatn nd I sugest a closed economy whc wil effect maximum utilizatn f d availabl resources. D oil sector z a valid xample.

I believe when we have strengthened institutions corruption will be minimal. For instance if efcc is strong and independent there will be less corruption.

Strong institutions mean that everything will rum smoothly and efficiently. ITF will pay us our siwes money that they owe us.

I don't subscribe to the idea of a closed economy because this is the age of globalization. If we close our economy from the world the inbreeding may be too much and we'll not innovate. We need diverse input and funding.

I may also add the point of Fiscal Discipline to your contribution. If the budget is not capital inclined and it is not followed to the letter we have a lot of loose money which our light fingered leaders find easy to shift.

A closed economy is an economy dat does not engage in international trade meaning it is self sufficient. No import and export . No country does dat now. It is more theoritical dan practical. All economies now are open.

I agree with this.

We could also improve the economy thru

A strictly controlled importation system whereby flimsy imports are discouraged.

Well policed borders to discourage smuggling from Cotonou

Well managed ports to make imports/exports hassle free

Tarrifs on goods we can produce in Nigeria. Outright ban on importing some products eg buckets toothpicks plastics

Electricity
