What is the minimum wage?

As a private establishment they have the right to dictate what to pay and you also have the right to accept or reject it.

but they do not have the right to keep you on contract for more than 1 yr, trying to defend them is not helping out. pls let join hand.

Quite an interesting thread, unfortunately you cant blame the organisations because they are set up to make more money and do anything to give dividends to their shareholders especially in an environment like nigeria where the ratio of applicants to available jobs is out of this world.

It is time the youths start looking inward at what they can do to make money and not believe your qualification gives you any right to a particular mode of life. the strenght of the western world lies in the SME's (small medium enterprise) and not in its graduate system, we have to start seeing our education as a way of improving ourselves to be able to think outside the box and not neccesary as a way of getting a job.

There are a lot of business opportunities and ideas that one can come up with that doesnt really require you to have a huge capital, for example business is simply having the ability to buy for N50 and sell for N70 and repeating that process as many times as possible, let us cultivate the habit of taking control of our destiny and not wait for another to give it to you, as no one will ever give you what you are worth. If a company pays you N500k per month it is because they know you will deliver at least N10m worth of service to them in that month. You dont need big money to start a business

Amazon started in a garage, one of the biggest retailers in the US started with selling $20 tomatoes on a daily basis for $40 dollars and the rest is history.

If you can look for something you can buy for N5,000 and sell for N6,000 with a contant regularity then you are in business and on your way to financial freedom, this is usually found in the consumables industry FMCG.

Wow, I cant believe that people still earn that amount this days but what I will say is this, if that is the job your hands find to do, do it. Some of this people have responsibilities, or needs to be met, at the end of the day there is no food for a lazy man! It is good to work but DO NOT BE COMFORTABLE IN THE JOB seek for alternatives quick. Do not be complacent, continue attending more job tests and interviews till you get the desired choice.

If running something of your own is the alternative why not, pursue it with all sense of hardwork, diligence and dedication but I will quickly add that you understand if business is for you.

Many pple have said here that this people are silly and shld hv started a business but mind you business isnt for everybody. I knw pple who left their paid jobs (six figures) to start something of their own all becoz of the "be your own employer" who are worse off now even after years on it. Its always best to understand your make up because being your own employer carries much more hardwork and responsibility.

Hey dude, am not evil, you can't solve a deep rooted problem by just scratching the surface, you have to start from the foundation which is the government.

You are clamouring for increase in wages in private companies when the government pay even less.

The national minimum wage is 18k, you didn't see anything wrong in that even when you are paying tax to the government but you are clamouring against private companies.

A level 15 graduate worker(about 30 years in service) in kwara state civil service earn 110k-120k. Nobody is talking about that, the foundation

of the problem is with the government.

Well, if that is the angle you are looking at it, you ain't evil. But I hope kidnappers and armed robbers are fixing the problems. Very soon, the problem will be fully solved.

My dear, some Diamond bank contract staff told me they still earn as little as 30k in 2014. I didn't believe it.

UBA has come a long way. When I was there, contract staff pay was nothing to write home about but with N74k, that means their long struggle with management has yeilded positive fruit. 74k is presentable under Nigeria's current economic circumstances. I wish they do see that.

The only shortcoming is lack of career growth. That is why everyone should be dynamic in reasoning and invest in savings.

Smart guys don't spend all their lives in banking.

This is terrible sha. But I blame graduates who have decided it's either a white collar job or nothing.
My younger sister is in the fashion business, she is constantly on the lookout for good tailors but has to go as far as togo or cotonou to get some. And those guys dictate their pay, she pays nothing less thank 60k a month, not including the compulsory accommodation you give them. She has a friend that pays hers 100k a month sef, so she's even lucky. This is in Benin o where things are relatively cheap, I don't want to imagine what these guys earn in Lagos and Abuja.
We're currently building and in the plastering stage and again all fingers pointed to the togolese/ Benin Republic guys as the best people for the job. These guys are in the range of 15 to 22 years and they take nothing less than 600k-1mn for a standard sized duplex. A job they complete in 2 weeks.
These are people who aren't even licensed to work in this country, getting more jobs and earning more than most Nigerian youths.
So until Nigerian graduates learn to think outside the box, this situation will sadly continue. Get a skill. Stop the craze for white collar jobs. As one of my lecturers used to say back then, "shit money does not smell"

Nigerian youths are mentally lazy. They are risk averse.

Some of these people doing N25k job have up to N100k savings during NYSC but they refuse to use their brains productively. They want to wear suit and tie at all costs.

I abandoned banking but I was never a contract staff. The pay was good but the slavery and pressure was too much. I promised myself I will continue thinking out ways to make money in business. Business income is not steady but when it starts rolling in, it seems like oil money. And the good tide comes at least once every two years..

I know a roadside banana seller who makes up to N10,000 profit in a day. Sells up to N40k worth of banana some days, owns plots of land and drives a jeep. #Banana seller . I don't wanna talk about construction workers. Some masons go home with 5K to 6K from my site if i am building.

Nigerian youths are not only lazy but shy to earn a living. They look at some jobs as demeaning of their non existent status.

Right now, I want to invite an apprentice to teach me a new skill for a product I want to manufacture and introduce into my store. Yes, I will learn from a person who can hardly feed himself and convert his knowledge because I have the capital which he lacks to actualize his dream.

Why are most Nigerians not really thinking within and be self employed??

You are asking what 200k can do
You've being depending on parental support I guess all your life?.
200k will make you a distributor of phone airtime you called recharge card
Venture into agriculture either as producer of agricultural produce or distributor mainly by traveling to rural areas and take the produce to cities you will more than 100k monthly and you still have time for other things.
And once you are recognized . at your leisure or after any work you are doing you make your bulk production.

Take a risk and be a great man
No rich men in the world is without a risk history.
Ask dangote ,otedola, adenuga Mr globacom they are all a risk taker. ASKED THEM
with little or no supervision sir As a fulltime medical or Engineering student?

Sir as a fulltime doctor or engineer that your little corner can kick start your brave and excellent future.

In your office to your co-medics or engineers let them know your take outside

For the case of the recharge card tell them you sells in bulk, and I believed the route to your office you have card sellers, tell them you sell in bulk
In your area as well you can also find a secondary school leaver who is trustworthy even a blood relation that can oversea your small outlet

Be very sure that extra biz use see as small business will make you not to touch your salary.

Do something now and come back to thank me later.

As to me ,I'm into cards, buy and selling of farm produce as well as farming.
And I will never go for a job that is less than 100k for start and beside it must be work that will not sabotage all my precious time.

Believe this NO EMPLOYER WILL PAY YOU YOUR EXACT WORTH

what business would you do with 200K without serious supervision

1. Cement and building materials distribution.

2. Barbing salon.

3. Hair dressing salon, manicure and pedicure.

4. Provision store.

5. Franchise and Warehousing.

6. Borehole drilling.

7. Block moulding.

8. Daycare centre.

9. Restaurant and bar.

10. Mini boutique.

11. Generator repairs.

12. Paint making.

13. Detergent and Soap making.

So many businesses can be funded with N200,000.

If Nairaland wants to set up a mini business academy for young graduates, it is possible to coach people who need business guidance. Success in business is 80% experience and 20% capital.. I believe this site has experienced people.
