In the US, most schools (including universities) use an A, B, C, D, and F letter-grading system. These letter grades can further be sub-divided into:
A-, A, A+; B-, B, B+ etc.

Generally, the distribution of scores for the letter grades are as follows:

A = 90 and above
B= 80-89
C= 70-79
D= 60-69
F= 0-59

In addition, in some classes, especially the mandatory classes needed for the completion of a Bachelors or Associate Degree, it is mandatory for a student to score 70 or higher in to pass the class.
Cs are not that desirable either, because a C average student would find it difficult to get a high-paying corporate job.

The maximum GPA score is a 4.0, and academic honors (Dean's list; Cum, Summa, and Magna cum laude) are awarded to students with a minimum of 3.5, 3.7, and 3.9 semester and CGPAs respectively.
