As at press time on Thursday, about 2,047 persons had signed a petition asking Yale University to withdraw the honorary doctorate degree awarded to Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Okonjo-Iweala had been awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters on Monday, May 18, 2015 during Yale’s Commencement ceremony in New Haven, Connecticut, alongside eight others.

The petition, which is being hosted on change.org, the world’s largest petition platform, was started by a Nigerian resident in the United States, one Sunday Iwalaiye.

When THISDAY visited the web page, it was discovered that 453 more petitions were needed to reach 2,500, which will probably prompt the organisation to consider the petition worthy of consideration.

When the petitioner kicked off the movement, the signatures had trickled in by the seconds but they have since leaped to over 2,000, with more probably on the way.

Tagged “Yale University gave its prestigious honorary doctorate degree to an undeserving Nigerian,” the petition reads in part: “There is no tangible evidence of any economic development in Nigeria under the leadership of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (sic) in all reality.

“Nigeria’s economy is still an oil-dependent economy that is debt and borrowing ridden as well as 100% consuming and importing in nature.”

Well I think its the right thing to do. Why will the University be awarding certificate of mediocrity. I bet they do not know reality on ground. In another development. http://www.naijablower.com/2face-is-a-hypocrite-man-who-claims-to-be-music-stars-childhood-friend/

Let's call a rope a rope and a snake, a snake. If another person from a different tribe had handled the economy the way okonjo did, and was awarded a degree for it, wld he hav supported it? I am sure he wldn't. Nothing has improved under okonjo. She is simply not fit to handle any economy. Not even cape verde's

U see!! U started your points well but the moment u mentioned buhari I bet u, u lost it, how does buhari relates to this issue. Don't u think as an african its u who have a longer way to go? Yes okonjo iwela is not only a textbook economist but also an imf stooge. Look at the Nigerian economy and see how well you can rate the overrated madam. why did she join on the swf and subsidy removal gospel according to the doctrine of Christine laggard without thinking it through when Asian tigers were dropping the idea like bad habit. Many economists in Nigeria will school okonjo for free from Bismarck rewani to henry Boyle and kalu idika kalu. But in your holy book of ethnic bigotry you can never see issues in this light.

Stop this nonsense u are talking about. It is only in nigeria that okonjo iwela can do this. Was she not the same person that helped nigeria to pay off her huge debt during obj administration? Why has she taking us back into another huge debt. Are u saying everything is ok with FG borrowing to pay salary? I dont know why people like u can not call a spade a spade. U dont need a prophet to tell u the state of nigerian economy now as i speak. The fact that she went to one of the best schools abroad doesnt translate to quality performance of any given task. She was just priviledged. A whole lot of nigerians can perform creditably well than her.
