@veave. lol. You can start by reducing your portions and adding more veggies and fruits to your diet because doing it cold turkey can be difficult. Cheating once in a while is ok too and yours truly has been cheating like crazy.
In the past few days I have had sweet and salty popcorn, ovaltine buiscuits, iced cappucino with cream, jollof rice(the devil) embarassed etc. but i know I will have to do more jumpsquats and pressups in the coming days. grin grin

It just takes a lot of determination.

grin grin @ the porridge iv had the bland oats twice this week and getting used to it. But have to overcompensate with rasberries, blueberries or bananas grin

Lemon in water is soo nice and like you said the health/detox benefits are double whammy benefits. That's the only way I can drink water straight from the mains. It kills that horrible 'hard water' taste that the water in the UK has.Had to improvise esp now that I rarely drink any other drink but water and green tea.

You can also add some slices of cucumbers and mint leaves. That's also good for detox. More uses for those zillions of cucumbers you buy. grin

Re: the bolded... cheesy cheesy

So you guys also add lemon to your water in addition to lime? Okay, I'll try that too. Will pick up some lemons next time I go food/fruit shopping. smiley

But this lime and lemon mixture of a thing is only going to be in my very first two glasses of water in the morning oh! I still love my tap water plain, with nothing in it.

Mint? Ginger? I absolutely detest those two and wouldn't even touch them with a barge pole. lipsrsealed As per the cucumber slices, I'll keep having them for breakfast, and as a mid-morning snack. smiley

When I got tired of fighting the craving, I got up and did an intensive cardio workout for nearly 90 mins - Scola's Dondo's three dance workout videos. Did the Kukere and Azonto twice, but the afrobeat werrrkout just once abeg. See sweating eh! But t'was all good.

I ended up missing breakkie sef, so had the African stir fry bolé instead. Yummie! Thankfully, there wasn't any Agege bread, or Sardines in Sunflower oil, or Carnation (condensed) milk in the house otherwise I would have soooooooo gone for those. grin grin

All I can say is the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak grin but I still tried to maintain the 50/20/30 ratio sha

Damiso, your meal looks soooo good! And good on you for applying the 50-30-20 rule.

I've gotta admit you're strong sha. Especially where that jollof rice is concerned. Just one spoon alone and my defence wall will come crashing down as per, I know I would cave in to the temptation...and my jollof rice would end up being the 50% grin grin

I think this is where I really commend Babe3 for how she does it. By emulating her, my efforts at exercising portion control are getting better.

For me, they key thing is to make equally tasty diet foods for myself as I serve the rest of the family with the things I'm gradually giving up on - white carbs like rice, yams, yellow garri, etc - and this is where (I know I've said it countless times) I can't thank you and Chillisauce enough for that African stir fry with bolé idea. I made five days worth of it and shared them into sealable plastic containers Babe3 style, and stored away in my deep freezer.

I'm gradually learning to eat less, but more frequently. i.e: smaller, healthy meals (portion control), but more often...as opposed to huge meals. Na small small person dey go. Will get there eventually. cheesy cheesy

Hello ladies. I have been an observer for a while and I must say, you are trying.

I need help and I am sure someone here can help me out.

I am in my late twenties. I have always been big but it has gotten worse ever since I had my baby. At some point, I was serious with exercising and I actually lost 9kg in 2 months. Somehow I lost all will power and let myself go again and it is even worse now (Moving dangerously close to 100kg). I truly need help.

My questions:

1. What is the 50-30-20 rule about?
2. Most of the veggies I see here are not available in Nigeria. Can anyone suggest good alternatives?
3. How do I get over food addiction?
4. I need simple but effective exercises for beginners. Any suggestions? NB: Chest always gets in the way.
5. I use Canola oil for cooking. But a friend recently told me that even palm oil is healthier. She said even the soya oil we buy is unhealthy too. Is that true? I cannot afford Olive oil or coconut oil.

Thank you all in advance.
Re: Paste Pics Of Your Healthy Meal Here. by cococandy(f): 4:30pm On May 24, 2015
Let me try the little I can.

*the rule is about making veggies 50percent of your diet, proteins 30 percent and carbs 20. (Efe am I right?)

* the food addiction thing is real tough could be hard to let go. Just start by not buying anything you don't strictly need in your diet. Eat before you go food shopping so that you're not tempted to buy everything that comes your way. Drink lots of water before and between meals as it will help you feel fuller and reduce the amount you eat. If you go out or to a party, eat before you go so that the tempted to over-eat there will be low. Especially as those party foods are generously soaked in vegetable oil which is a whooping 120 calories per tablespoon.

*i've been counting calories and I have to tell you it works like magic. As an adult, you burn an average of 2,000 calories a day without exercising. With exercise, you could burn 2,500 or 2,700. If one meal at a time contains up to 1000 calories, that's bad for you because by the time you've done 3meals like that in day, you've excess calories to store away and that equals to weight gain. Example one burger is around 600 calls. Add fries(400 calories or more) and that's around one thousand for that meal alone. Then sizeable Eba for lunch with oily egusi and fried rice soaked in veggie oil for dinner. My sister do the math na. One month of that kind of eating will help you gain many pounds.

So for starters, get a tiny kitchen scale. Whenever you buy food, read the calorie content per serving and know how many grams or pounds one serving is. Then measure with your scale and you will be sure how many calories you're consuming at that particular moment. I try to keep my calories content around 1,300 a day. So that even if I don't exercise that day, I'll be sure to be in deficit as my normal daily metabolism will burn more than I consumed. Buy foods with low calories content per serving. But don't starve yourself. That will make you just over eat next time or make your body reduce its metabolic rate as adaptation to lack of food.

Efe,edwife, babe or chilli can help you with your exercise regimen. I no sabi for that side. I only do my eliptical training twice a day and sometimes go to the gym with hubby.

1. 50 vegetables/30 protein/ 20percent carbs. This means your vegetables should be bigger than your meat and carb by 50 %. As a starter you can start from 30 to40 percent vegetable and work your way up. Make hunger no make you lose hope.

2., start by eating lots of ugu leaves, okra , ogbolo, bitter leaf , .afang. Garden eggs.,carrot,cucumber..anything greens will help a lot.
3. Control your portion intake. One step at a time. Instead of eating one heavy poundo. Share it into three and eat gradually.

4. Take a walk instead of bike, etc. walk briskly .small push up, jumping jacks .even housework helps keep the calories off.

5. I will suggest you use palm oil since its closer to its natural state. Instead of eating those imported oils that might be from China. But use very little. Add tomatoes purée for color change. One step at a time

Thanks.

I decided to minimise my time here for a while but your post got to me somehow(maybe Sunday fever),needless to say, here is my little contribution.

As with everything in life, moderation is key. The very simple formula to weight loss is burning more calories than you take in.

Starvation is not good for the body. Avoid unhealthy snacks and drinks (drink water if you’re thirsty), eat fruits as snacks.

1.Eat Less Carbohydrate

The typical Nigeria Diet is heavy on Carbohydrate, a sample daily food consumption might include: Yam for breakfast, Eba/garri for lunch and Rice for supper.
The body (through an elaborate process) store excess carbohydrate as FAT and continuous excess carbohydrate consumption result in increased weight gain.Because You are trying to lose weight, it is extremely important to watch carbohydrate intake, consuming below the daily carbohydrate requirement means that your body will be forced to access stored energy (fat) which translates to weight loss.

2.Less palm oil consumption
Two spoon of palm oil is enough when cooking,or sunflower oil.

3.Watch The Salt (magi)

When we cook with packaged seasoning mixes, we introduce lots of salt into our diet. The typical seasoning like Maggi, Knorr, Adobo e.t.c contains high amount of salt in them, adding extra table salt to dishes that already contain these seasonings means salt overload.I use natural seasonings like garlic, ginger, basil, spring onions, parsley or celery.

4.Drink water,water and more water.

Avoid malt, coke and any fizzy drink.Eat more spicy food(pepper),it will help you consume more water than you planned.

5.Oven bake or oven fry

Stop frying your food. Fried foods introduce high amounts of oil, calories and fat into our diet which makes it more difficult to lose weight.
Roast them if possible if you don't have an oven, use grill and place on top of your local stove.

6.Choose your meat wisely

If you must eat red meat, make sure to trim off as much excess fat as possible. The recommended red meat option for dieter is goat meat; goat meat is comparable to beef in protein but contains 50% less calories and significantly less fat.As for your chicken remove the skin and cook, turkey is also good.

7.Avoid High Calorie Snacks (Fan Yogo, gala, lacasera, chin chin, buns, Puff puff, plantain chips)
Replace your snacks with fruits.(mango, bananas, apples(great for weight loss),avocado.

8.Eat more fibers
Legumes and beans must be at least cooked everyday in your house.

9.Walk,run,exercise.
You can exercise in the comfort of your house, you can use your bodyweight to exercise. If you have a baby, back him/her and do house chores, squat, rope skipping, stairs(climb 10 times a day).....sometimes i lay on the floor and put my legs up in the sofa while watching tv(give your back to the sofa to your tv direction),my sister you will not know when you are burning those calories and growing muscles.

Here is a Nigerian timetable i downloaded, but it's pdf so i couldn't.I took a pic from my laptop, hope you can see clearly.
Hope i was able to help. smiley

If you drive sometimes ditch the car and walk to some places.I know walking and jogging is a bit harder in Nigeria cos of the heat but some short distances will help I getting exercise into your everyday routine. If your hairdresser is like 5 streets away just walk down there briskly.I know Naija pal hate 'trekking' grin as it's called and even those who don't drive jump okada to to the shortest distances but walking/jogging/running is a free way to move around and get active.

If you work in a big office complex go to upstairs toilet.stair climbing is a good way to burn calories so instead of taking the lift take the stairs.any opportunity you find tale the stairs instead.

Lol! You try.

The last lap is usually the hardest, unlike the beginning which is easiest. My "problem" now is time. There just isn't enough of it. Twenty-four hours certainly isn't enough for one day.

Yea. I know the last bit is usually difficult to loose.

Talking about time, this week was just something else for me. I managed to workout only 3times through out the week, no time at all.

Meanwhile, here's me trying to do the 50-30-20 thing. Lol....

I've never really liked veggies, never ate them while growing up. I only started eating salads as an adult. Tried brussel sprouts one time but i just couldnt get it past my throat. I struggle with broccoli as well.
