africaken:When was the last time you were in Kenya? Cause you would know thats not true. There are two training camps for the GSU, one is at embakassi- this is the main one where all new recruits trains, after that, the best of the best who wish to join the recce squad are then selected, but they have to have scored C+ and above in high-school, then after doing some exam tests they are then selected and they go to Ruiru base which is the base for the recce and begin another training, after that, they then head to either Israel, UK, or US depending on there specialization- either sky marshial, crisis response, rendition. (this is what they used to do - I don't know if they still do it or if they have developed enough capacity to train localy)- but all officers undergo a basic training in counter terrorism, weapon handling, bomb recognition.the M-4 rifle is a standard issue for the recce squad- that's a given. Like you said earlier, the GSU is a palamilitary Unit of 5,000 police officers, of whom about 2000 are specialized forces. The 2000 are the recce squad of which standard rifle is the M4, the rest of the GSU are the ones who are armed with AK-47 and G3 rifles. They are basically trained in counter insurgency, and some go further and get trained as anti-riot police who usually provide back up to regular police when riotes or protest get violent. They also provide back up in any time there is not enough police to do a particular job. A typical recce squad member looks like this I can almost count the number of times the recce squad have responded to an incident, every time they came out they create a buzz, everyone will know, they will trend on twitter for atleast 12 hours. Regular GSU officers guarding the perimeter GSU-Recce Squad during westgate Here are regular GSU officers (not recce)

africaken: even the Administration police have that russian chest pouch These are regular GSU officers(anti-riote), they are responding to some protesters, here is another image at Uhuru park, during protests Because both teams are from the GSU, they both wear the green khaki trousers ,jungle camo jacket and red beret , the Administration police wear the similar only with a black beret. The recce squad have never responded to this kinds of petty things, they have never stuck around in public places longer than they have to (did you even see them during Garissa attack). There mission is always, get in, neutralized the threat, get out. the longest they have had to stay to neutralise a threat is during the Garissa college attack. Get yourself farmiliarised with the Recce squad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THgGebRZBlQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKgnU7MHORw |

Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 4:45pm On May 24, 2015 |
africaken:First you have to note that both the recce squad and the regular GSU wear the same cammo. the diffence is the training and equipment. The Recce-squad did not exist in 2009, they were actually formed somewhere between 2010-2011 and this was due to increased threat to hostage situations and not because of Hilary Clinton, else the US will have to train every country it visits. . The pictures you posted are actually in 2012 and those are regular GSU. In 2009, the plane carrying hilary clinton arrived somewhere in the evening, past six pm, it was almost getting dark, and it wasnt a bright daylight like in your pic The rest of the GSU, carrying ak47 are regular GSU providing security just like the rest of the police. FYI The GSU embakasi barracks(Basic training school) borders the airport. The first time the recce squad were ever spotted in public was during the Buru Buru shooting with gangsters in oct,2011 not any other time before that read this: The Recce company is a specially trained unit of commandos which easily compare with the British SAS, America’s Delta Force, France’s EPIGN and the Israel’s Sayaret Matkal. The main crucial function of Recce Unit is to provide support to the other field companies of the General Service Unit.Basically they are like Army SF units who provide support to other regular units, so when you see them in airport protecting VIPs and armed with M4 or M16 like in 2012 or recently with john kerry, they are actually supporting regular GSU(armed with ak47/G3) who usually cover a perimeter around the airport You cant seriously tell me that a country that spends $1.2Billion dollars on the police can fail to buy less than 2000 M4s for a specialized unit that spends more money on specialized training locally and to transport to and fro abroad for further specialized training. whats the point of all that training hostage rescue/counterterorism/CQB if you are going to equip them with old Aks that are used by the rest of regular police. If the US indeed Trained us for free for the sole purpose of protecting their secretary, don't you think they would have given us enough modern warfare kits like M4s to go around for the special team so that they can be more secure, rather that let us use Russian weapon to protect one of the most powerful US official? (you know how the US is big on symbolism). And wouldnt it be very degrading to train the recces in all those training schools around the world, then arm one commando with all than modern warfare kits (Like in the first pic), then give another commando standard issue Ak47 with nothing else 2nd pic - Recce with an M4 and an Ak rifle with a wooden buttstoke #rd pic - a recce with a plain cloth anti-terror police If you have watched Terror at the Mall documentary, there is a part in which they show regular GSU police with Aks on the entrance of the mall in which some white guy is asking if he can go in and one GSU officer tells him, "No one goes in, We are waiting for our own SWAT team" If you are stii convinced the recce squad use Ak47, then there is nothing else I can say to convince you otherwise

did you try to see when this video was posted ! something else the word recce dont assume its kenyan thing this is a british military lingo used for units involved in special operations and counter-insurgency e.g the shifta war In military operations, reconnaissance is the exploration outside an area occupied by friendly forces to gain information about natural features and enemy presence. can't you see Recce members armed with m-4's wearing tactical vest ,tactical thigh holster in this 2009 ntv news report !

africaken: That Unit was known as Presidential Escort Unit (Prescot) -which still exists as a separate unit - its sole purpose is VIP protection to the president. The simple fact is, the Recce-Company(recce by name and not by definition) which is based in Ruiru and was formed mainly to deal with counter-terorism and hostage rescue uses M4 as standard issue rifles. Infact all special units in Kenya from the navy(CDU),to the army SF and ranger strike force all have M4 carbine as standard issue |

asorockweb: South-Africa still got massive support from the Europeans despite the embargo. I recall the Portuguese government ordered tons of Super-Puma spare parts, and thereafter transferred them to South-Africa. However, there is no denying, the South-African defence industry despite the embargo thrived. Without the embargo, they would have been larger. As for Sudan, their industry has done well primarily because of the support from Iran, China and Pakistan. |
