NigerianNewbie: I lived in Ottawa for a year. Rooms for a month is like $500/month. You can also see $400/month. Around fairlea crescent with is ghetto u can see $350/month |

NigerianNewbie: Mevisbleek seems like he can help you with rent info. If this 8000 is for expenses after rent, then I think you should be ok. Most school id's let you get on public transit for free, I'm not sure about your school. Your major expense should just be food and going out for fun here and there. 100 bucks a week should cover those 2 things if you're cooking for yourself. Textbooks might be the other major cost but make friends when you get to school and you can find most major textbooks for free or cheap. If I remember more things I'll add. 1 Like |

NigerianNewbie: 800 is high, you can try to get a place outside campus and am sure you will be fine, plan between 500 and 600$ a month, and if you have up to 3 or 4 persons heading to Ottawa, you might all rent a building of say 3 to 4 bedroom. Which of the University are you heading to? I live in Ottawa too. |

Hello guys in Canada. I need experience people in Canada to answer this question. Can I be able to pay my tuition fee per year from funds I will get by huzle i.e working full time during holiday and part time during school? Cos my parents no too hold and man gat huzle to make ends meet. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by NigerianNewbie: 9:58pm On May 25, 2015 |
mevisbleek: Oh good, that seems a bit reasonable. Thank you. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by NigerianNewbie: 10:01pm On May 25, 2015 |
harkinhola: University of Ottawa, so I'm looking for places around Sandy hill (which I hear is very close to the school). I won't mind renting a building with some other folks for that price a month. Very ok with me. I'll send you a mail if that's ok. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by harkinhola: 10:07pm On May 25, 2015 |
NigerianNewbie: Sandy hill area is not bad if you really want to stay close to campus, apart from this reason, I will suggest you don't stay in that area. In my own opinion Sansyhill won't give you value for money. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by NigerianNewbie: 10:10pm On May 25, 2015 |
Solo8: Yes, UOttawa does have that, with the student card. Thanks for the info so far. I have a question though. Textbooks as opposed to ebooks, are they compulsory or just better to work with in school or based on personal preferences, cos I did not expect that to be classified as a major cost. Hope you can share some more info on this. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by NigerianNewbie: 10:16pm On May 25, 2015 |
harkinhola: Oh really. Which neighbourhoods do you suggest then? Also, do you by any chance know of any other people heading to Ottawa this fall, who could tag along with the group accommodation idea? Also anyone in the house? Do make contact. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by mevisbleek: 10:19pm On May 25, 2015 |
Futurewiser: It depends on which kind hustle you involve yourself in, if you know what I mean. Also depends on the province where you stay hustle. If you are in Ontario $10.25 minimum wage based on 20hrs a week ain't gonna cut it. Nwanne, forgive me jor anything is possible but it will be extremely hard tho. Just come first things go align. How much is Ur tuition and what province are you going to? |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by mevisbleek: 10:22pm On May 25, 2015 |
NigerianNewbie: Good day Sir, My brother regarding neighbourhood you suppose dey find the cheapest at this stage. Enter fairlea crescent e cheap like $400.im sorry for suggesting cheap stuff. But if you have some paper to burn I would suggest downtown Ottawa. Are you going to buy a house when you arrive or you looking to rent sir? 3 Likes |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by harkinhola: 10:24pm On May 25, 2015 |
NigerianNewbie:There are a few things to put into consideration before we start suggesting. apart from cost, transport is important, so as your life style. Are your Graduate or Undergraduate? I don't know anyone coming to Ottawa but am sure you can get a few in here. Feel free to send the PM if you have anything private you want to share. 1 Like |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by harkinhola: 10:27pm On May 25, 2015 |
mevisbleek: Just to clarify something here, even 400$ at fairlea is super difficult, maybe it was easy when you were here though, but I feel he should not plan on 400$ so he doesn't get stranded. That's my view though. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by mevisbleek: 10:30pm On May 25, 2015 |
harkinhola: Really? Even in Alberta you can see a room for $400 as well as Toronto. Transport from fairlea in extremely easy as bus 8 goes straight to downtown. Suggest other places to him but when I was there it was uber easy I tell u with couple of Nigerians around (chicks to be precise) so he will enjoy it |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by Solo8(m): 10:33pm On May 25, 2015 |
NigerianNewbie: Textbook are not compulsory but you will need it for assignments. Some courses might also require you to buy some online portal access. What program are you in? Honestly, In my experience paper textbooks are better for studying but the price and carrying them around just outweighs the positives. All the courses that I've had paper textbooks for I've done better in but everyone ends up getting digital copies of the book for the above mentioned reasons. |

loriaidah: Yeah! I'm going to UNB. What campus is your program? Fredericton or Saint John? |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by harkinhola: 10:38pm On May 25, 2015 |
mevisbleek: Lol, that's an area where you have lot of blacks, but bus 8 don't work till 1am. and the 400$ houses, do they have all other overheads included? for me I stay out late, so I always prefer a place that has bus 95, or at least not far from bus 95 bus stop, St. Laurent is fine, you have lots of blacks in there too, and relatively cheap. + you have lots of African markets around Blair area is cool too, Montreal area is fine, bus 12. But let him state what he is concerned about, hopefully I can give better suggestion. |

Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by Futurewiser: 10:39pm On May 25, 2015 |
mevisbleek: Nwanne my tuition na 14,200 per year ooh for University of Manitoba. Also Brandon gave me admission and their tuition is cheaper at 6k per year but I no sure say job go dey the city. The huzle wey i mean na normal working huzle to work and study and pay fees and bills. |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by mevisbleek: 10:41pm On May 25, 2015 |
harkinhola: Lol u Don sabi Ottawa finish. Brother doesn't have a ride and u dey send am go Montreal abi Gatineau. Well we shall wait until he states his preference. Vanier is also a good place heared they have lots of girls wey sabi leaving out there. It's well 1 Like |

Nwanne (in phyno voicee), It'll impossible to work to pay your fees. I think there is a restriction on how much hours you can work with a student visa, and even if you were able to work 40 hrs, your grades will be affected. 3 Likes |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by harkinhola: 10:44pm On May 25, 2015 |
mevisbleek: Haba, I meant Montreal road, that's where you have Vanier na. That's why I said bus 12. |

Solo8: Na wa ooo. I just tire... |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by mevisbleek: 10:47pm On May 25, 2015 |
Futurewiser: Thank you sir. I went to manitoba for 1 week and couldn't help but notice how dry that place is. To hustle 14k ain't easy at all but doable. Since money is kinda tight (not for so long no worry) I guess you should go for the cheaper tuition. Maybe when school close u fit come out west to do heavy hustle. Maybe work 14 hrs a day to get that money fast. I must confess it is possible to hustle real douche but possible when school close cos then u can pickup more hours. No worry my brother as I said just come first e go align no worry. It is well no worry 2 Likes |
