Changing bag -
Cot net -
Bassinet (small baby bed with net, usually put on the bed) -
Sleeping suits and Body suits
Cartons of Huggies diapers (from 0 – 3months or 4 – 6kg)
Christening dress or shirt and trouser
Baby wardrope
Face towels & Big towels
Thermometer
Bibs
Nighties for mum
disposable pants for mum
lady Sept
Firm maternity bras
Singlets and baby panties
Clothes, Shoes and socks, booties
Caps and hand gloves (mittens)
Baby oil, Baby cream, Baby hair Shampoo and Baby soap (preferably Boots products as Johnson now has fake except you prefer it though)
Mentholated Powder (Prickly Heat Powder)
Moko Mentholated Spirit
Eucalyptus Ointment and Menthol Aton
Olive Oil
Cotton buds
Feeding bottles (Preferably Avent or Tommie tippee)
2 Flasks (1 big one and 1 small one)
Shawls and Flannels
Plenty wipes
Set of Combs
Blankets, Bed spread with pillow cases
Baby Rocker
Pacifiers and Soft toys
1 Roll of Cotton wool
Savlon or Purit (1 or 2 Big ones and a small one)
Finger Brush with storage care (Mastela or any other product)
Baby Nail care (Manicure/Pedicure set)
Baby sponge
Spoon and cup
Washing clothe hanger
Baby plastic bathe set
Electric jug

Lol. I'm a Ftm and you don't need all that. I sadly don't have Naija prices (I'm doing my shopping overseas) but may I help?

cot: Graco is about $200. Instead of buying a cot and a bassinet separately, look into Graco playard $100. it has a bassinet and can be used as a travel cot and a play pen for older kids and can be packed away. an IKEA cot which transforms into a bed is about £115 (almost $200).

Baby stroller: in Nigeria, only if you live on a nice estate in Lekki and spend a lot of time at the mall. I don't trust a stroller on our uneven and dusty Naija roads. It's not a necessity for me. I'd rather get a Baby Bjorn ($80) or one of those new carry clothes. Bear in mind most of them act like tying a really long wrapper to your front, not back.

Carrier seat: either Graco or Chicco is fine. Infant seat Graco is $99, but they will outgrow it by a year max. A convertible car seat can take a newborn to toddler age but costs minimum $160 Graco brand. However, a good car seat should snap in to its corresponding stroller so if you still want a stroller, get the car seat that is sold with it.

Changing bag: who will carry it, you or your hubby? I got a Columbia messenger changing bag because my hubby will carry sometimes and it was $19 from Ross (more expensive outside) but one of the solid ones is Skip Hop Forma ($45). A durable backpack will work as well and be cheaper.

By now prices should be scaring you grin so ask around and see what you can inherit from mamas who have finished having their kids. I inherited some of my stuff and there's no shame in saving a little.

Sleep suit: check and see if it is UK or US (UK sizes are bigger than US). Try Mothercare (UK) or Carter's or Gerber (US). Don't get more than 3 or 5 for newborn size. I have only 3 sleep suit and one pack of newborn onesies.

Feeding bottles: buy the ones that come with the sterilizer set (mine is from Avent £70 and has like 6 bottles). Kills 2 birds with one stone.

Bone clothes for now. You have no idea how big and how fast your kid will grow and do you seriously think you will not kill yourself changing cloth several times a day. I'm using only onesies and sleeping suit for the first 3 months and anyone that wants to gift me baby clothes I will take it. Also I'm hitting up a consignment store, if I can pick up some second-hand ones I will (most are new because the baby outgrew them before wearing so ask mummies if they have clothes that their kid outgrew fast and will be in the mood to sell second-hand). Also shoes for a baby who can't walk yet is funny and not so necessary. Why buy that and add an additional layer of something which can get lost easily

will be back gotta go shower. I'm giving you foreign prices so that you can either hit www.amazon.com and order everything (find a good shipping coy) or buy in Naija (but warning they will have increased their prices due to dollar) and you can used black market rate to convert and get a rough estimate and price it better in the market.

No p. Did you get a bouncy chair or rocker? You need one because when you want to cook or bath or something, you will need somewhere to place the baby (and most don't like being awake in their cots). So a bouncy chair vibrates, keeps them strapped in and frees your hands. There are some things on the list you truly don't need, but you can still buy them.

edit: I see its on your list, it's very necessary.

Maternity bras go for N4, 000 upwards but you're not apparently the right size until your 38 week when your milk comes in (that's what I was told at Mothercare and Destination Maternity). So wait till then if you can.

Disposable panties for mum, buy the ones for old people (Depends or another brand). It absorbs more and should start from N7500.

Nice tips @ onegai

Let me add this -

Obviously, Car seat is only necesary if there is a car, but if you bus, pls don't bother

Onesies and sleeping suits are quite uncomfortable in Naija, too much heat. Sleeveless body suits are perfect for naija weather, loose trousers can later be worn with it at night. Only buy them if the room will be kept cool all through the night.

Strollers and prams are definitely out of it...where is the road naa?

I could never use baby carriers in Naija, wrappers all the way!

Electric Sterilizers too are a waste from my experience. No light. Sterilizing tablets or liquid is better off. Then, I couldn't get descalers to buy anywhere so had to pack it up.

Travel cot with bassinet sure makes a lot of sense. Very economical and efficient

@missmalachi,
Get your mum, a sis/friend who knows about baby shopping,is a bit fit & has an eye for quality ;go to Dosunmu in Balogun market.

Do a price comparison in three to five stores & never make the mistake of sitting in one shop claiming "tiredness", they will sweet talk you and subsequently rip you off.

Wish I knew current prices but don't.

Hafsat24 first go and buy Folic acid asap to be taking then register for ante-natal. Discharges may be a symptom of a UTI (or it could be nothing), but it's better to know.

as per supplies, I got a Mothercare baby set that had nailcare, thermometer, medicine measuring spoon, nose pump and everything, rather than buying one by one.

I'm not a fan of liquid sterilizer, 2 of my siblings are pediatricians and neither recommend it (they tell me to stay away from chemicals if I can). So far, I'm staying away from talc (powders) and such ( I and my siblings had breathing problems and asthma as kids, don't want to expose my kid to it).

same with baby oil, I will substitute Olive oil for it and then eventually introduce Coconut oil into my baby's regime.

I read that your child should dress how you dress, so if you feel it's cold and you need a sweater, then your baby needs more cover. If you feel hot, then your child shouldn't be swaddled in blankets. Which is why I've avoided blankets for now (I will get a few second-hand because of my location because I'm sure I'm not using them for long.

There are some few items on my list that I'm not mentioning but are necessary because they help the mum, not the baby.

Aww!! Wish I could teleport myself to you. smiley

@Kimoni,
The wrapper level is the shiznit!! The baby will wake sef & just maintain for back.

@onegai,
You're so on point about the olive/cocnut oil
& for the dressing baby part, I cringe inwardly when I see babies dressed in onesies under shirts and trousers/dresses with caps and socks to boot in this our hot abuja weather.

The babies will be wailing and when you can't take it no more and ask the mum to remove some items, you'll hear another person come up with the "Pneumonia" tale. undecided

IT WILL ALL END IN PRAISE BY THE GRACE OF GOD.

I'm a former team June (now team July). How bad are those cramps? I asked my 2 experienced elderly mama's here and they said those cramps are your body preparing for birth and when you start having contractions, you will know (because you probably won't be able to talk during contractions). Your birthing may start with water breaking and no contractions (happened to a friend this year, for hours) and in that case, head to the hospital. But yeah, your bag should always be by the door or in your car by now. Because from 36 weeks that baby can show. As long as those cramps are not constant (they go and come), it's not the real deal.

@Modath please share some tips on how to properly dress a baby in Naija. Because Lord knows I've seen complete outfit on babies and wondered how cold they were. One of the doctors in my house is constantly "not being nice" to some patients because he said he has seen and heard too many theories parroted as fact by Nigerians. Like Pneumonia being caused by not dressing warmly (it's more likely caused by dirty environment and charcoal fire, so all those buses in Lagos with bad exhaust are more likely to cause wahala) and giving Agbo to a baby (because you think they have malaria). He likes natural remedies but we lost a baby cousin due to village mentality of treatment and he's lost a lot of babies and kids due to their parents being swayed by public opinion to do something they instinctively knew wasn't good. He says even your doctor is not always correct, ask a 2nd doctor always.

so please give an example of how to dress a boy and a girl, maybe in rainy season and harmattan, with location. Thanks.
