43 QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ There came the next morning after a very long busy yesterday. The weather was a bit chilly `this' morning as it had rained some few hours in the midnight. The trees were starting to stretch back to their usual length after they had given in to the wind which made them bowed to the lords of the wet season. The grasses were still wet and their colours had transformed from the dull and dried green to a bright green. They blossomed and glorified themselves waiting for the early morning sun which was more rich in nutrient - essential for photosynthesis to take place. It was still early, about 6:38am yet the morning hadn't really brighten up, - may be because it was not yet awake or it had drank too much of darkness (as if it were a drink) to forget it was supposed to have risen very early. However, there were cars and buses already plying the road. Their full-lights were in unison with the streetlights. A car had broken down at the service lane and the owner was confused. He was dressed in suit and his black shoes were stained at both tips. Since he didn't know what step he would take, he began sweating profusely - even in the cold weather. He removed his jacket and threw it to the back seat from outside the car. Not so long as the 6ft man whose white shirt and black tie were now revealing had gone to the boot/trunk to pick spanner, plier and other equipment needed to check the car out, - was when a Jeep sped pass and splash!! It bathed the man with rain waters that were still lingering on the bridge. “You are a st^pid man! See what you've done.” The man checked himself out. Bull, his white shirt was stained. He shouted but the Jeep didn't wait,it kept to its pace. That was double `wahala' for the office man. A bus stopped later at the school gate and 3 people disembarked, one of them was Adefemi. He had never arrived so early to school before and only him knew his mission. The least he had come early to school was 7:03am in the Junior school when he was amongst the acting prefects. He was well rewarded anyway - as he was given the post of punctuality prefect. Now, he was here very early, surely on a mission. Immediately he had descended the stairs that was mouthed to the bridge, he wore his school-bag to his back and entered the gate. There were no prefects yet, so virtually there was nothing to do and it meant he could evade doing nothing this morning, so long he could maintain his solitude in his classroom till the assembly bell `explodes.' As he got in front of the staircase, he saw Miss Yemisi just descending the last staircase. “Good morning ma,” he greeted and walked off, passing the front of the staffroom which was still empty but florescent lit the room and it looked really classy. “Morning dear,” she replied Adefemi who was already some distance away from her “how was your night?” But go no reply. She enetered the staffroom to drop her bag. It seemed she also arrived not so long ago and had gone upstairs to sign-in. Soon as she had dropped her bag, she used her hands to loose her weave-on, to redress it using her fingers. Then they fell down across her shoulder and her chest. she looked another classification of beauty, the white top and blue-black skirt she wore were so well ironed, - may be to impress someone, only she knew. She hadn't make up but she ran lipstick across her lips. She walked out of the staffroom and headed towards the SS1 Art class, which was Adefemi's class. When she got into the class, her shoes weren't sounding on the floor so he didn't notice she had come inside and was at his back. He mused and talked into space as if he were practising insanity or already a scholarship holder in science of insanity. She stared at his cheek which was turning up and down to show he was smiling and saying something. She cleared her throat and he looked back to see her standing, - he was startled. “Oh! Never knew you were at my back,”. He smiled slightly, may be it was meant to stop her from asking why he had been talking to himself. “What have you been thinking about?” She asked, her teeth flashing white as ever. She was so beautiful and her black skin glimmered. “Nothing you know, I was just trying to get my head settled. Let's say some revisions.” He lied, whereas what he had been talking to himself about was on the message he received the previous day from the number he doesn't (didn't) have on his phone. “Oh! I see!!” She exclaimed and since the class was empty, she thought may be it would be right to sit with him but decided against it. What if another teacher saw her sitting with him? A male student for that matter! Although, they might not think it on the level it was playing on her mind but she doubted. They might read it on the second level, she thought. “Are you busy?” She questioned. She rested her buttocks against a desk close to him. “Not really. I just decided to come early today cause I woke up early,” He lied once again, smiled sheepishly and continued “I didn't want to sit at home till the usual time I often come to school. Moreover, I came so I could catch some rest here before classes begin for the day.” “Hmmmmmmmmm! So you mean you can't accompany me to the field? Think I need to get something down this place,” Miss Yemisi pointed to her stomach. “Ok then, let's go!” He stood up from the chair and proceeded to place his bag on the desk, removing the money he had kept in the bag's smaller compartment. She walked in front while he followed her - as they were drawing close to the footpath divided by shrubs, she waited for him so they could walk together on same lane, almost hand in hand. She wanted to start a discussion but suspended doing so yet he broke the silence. “So why didn't you cook from home and bring along?” |

She laughed out loud for a few seconds. Her voice sending the toads that had been `croak`ing' into a deep silence. What sort of laughter early that morning was disturbing their sleep? As if they ever `sleep' (present continuous). One would imagine may be toads do sleep cause they never stop their croaks during the night. “You are funny you know?” She asked rhetorically but it rendered Adefemi's face on a straight. How has he acted funny? Or what had he said that sounds funny? He was surprised. “This work doesn't offer one much time to do that. You have to rise early and make sure you meet up to sign-in early,” she explained and suddenly went silent. Her emotion changed as though she weren't happy with it, with all the troubles she had to face serving her fatherland. “But,......” He tried to speak but she interrupted him. “Don't let's dwell on that dear. It's nothing! Let's talk about you.” “About me?” He shrugged his shoulders. “Why don't you let us talk about you?” They both laughed. They were cheerful and one could read it in their voices. They entered a canteen that sold snacks, - the best snacks in the whole complex. Students had given the owner the name Mrs. Smalls as a contemporary with Mr. Biggs - widely known. They said her snacks were perfectly made and the taste were nothing different from that of Mr. Biggs' snacks. “Good morning ma,” Miss Yemisi greeted. “Good morning Mrs. Smalls,” Adefemi put his in the usual and widely accepted way. “`Goodu' morning young teacher,” she responded and smiled sheepishly towards Adefemi. She stared back at the teacher and were both engaged for some minutes, using facial language. Later they both guffawed, Adefemi was left clueless of what the laughter was all about, yet he maintained his calm. “So what do you have prepared for us this morning or are we too early?” Questioned Miss Yemisi. “Na only doughnut still dey down.” Only God knew how easy it had been for the new Miss to have known the school so quickly. She even knew the most popular and sought after Mrs. Smalls. “We'll manage it anyway. You can give me two and serve my ward anything he wants.” “Wetin be `Ward' again o?” Mrs. Smalls displayed her level of illiteracy. “Shey na ward for hospital or one for all these `politico' them?” Miss Yemisi and Adefemi rolled in the aisles. Though, Adefemi had no idea `ward' as of hospital existed - he knew what other meaning it has. How funny could this mama be? “Don't worry Mrs. Smalls, you will understand soon,” she tried not to engage her any further. “Do not bother to serve me ma. I don't eat such early before classes!” Adefemi objected. “Make una break this grammar small small for me abeg. I no go school reach this una level. Na `elementary' (primary) school my papa power reach to send me.” Mrs. Smalls made joke and they all laughed. “Well, I don't `chop' in the morning,” Adefemi murdered pidgin. Miss Yemisi as well as himself laughed. It seemed Mrs. smalls also knew why! “You see, you no even fit speak pidgin well,” she mocked and chuckled. The next 20 minutes was lively and laughter continued to rent the air until they decided to leave. Mrs. Smalls was glad how fast her work had gone with these cheerful people. She never wanted them to go but Miss Yemisi said they've got something private to discuss and needed to have some audience. Nevertheless, she craved for their company very soon. As they went out of the canteen, they didn't go straight to the school. They strolled towards the Astro Turf 2000, a mini `stadium' in the school complex, discussing. The stadium wasn't far from the school 2. “Adefemi,” she called his name, paused as he looked into her eyes. The height between them was about a foot yet their eyes met. She took a deep breath as one would do after calling his or her lovers' name - to tell them something of extreme importance, or how much one appreciated them. “You know, I've never been this happy early in the morning,” she started and waited again to cook up what her next words would be but he cut her short with a smile. “Well, that's cool! We all don't need to be tensed up every time. It doesn't make us look beautiful,” he spoke like a sage. She was wowed about this young man. “But why did you look tensed in my class the other time?” She changed her voice to a matter of fact. It appeared they were same age now, she was 21 and he was 14 going to 15 but she had humbled herself so much to this young man's age. She loved him so much and there in his eyes - she saw what she wanted in her father, brother, boyfriend and possibly husband. “You know miss, the world ain't fair to many good people,” he became emotional. He was starting to shed tears. She could see in his eyes - water forming. The atmosphere had changed rapidly to one being controlled by unknown forces. Heartbeats increased and there was certain `loominess' and shady clouds hanging about them. They were alone now in the place, the world - standing facing each other. It only remained for them to hold hands. She didn't know when tears formed in her face and she sobbed. He looked up to her yet he couldn't see her. His visions were blurred by the tears he was trying to prevent from taking a long walk down his face. They gathered to a certain percentage before they were able to swim or drop. Two drops went down from his eyes in quick succession and he saw her clearly now. He stretched his hands may be he could reach for her face to wipe her tears but he couldn't. His hands stopped at her mouth. He stood on his toes and he reached the summit, - wiped her tears with the thumbs and pat her shoulder. “Thank you so much dear,” she must have known why he said what he said earlier. Was the world unfair to her too? This might be two worlds of different individual colliding. “We could shed tears till eternity but if we do not try to make a change where required, the pain would linger on, cling to our being like a plague,” he spoke again in what she found hard to comprehend. Was this young man reading her mind and telling her she had found solutions to her problems?. |

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Meanwhile, at the school, students had started arriving. The morning was now waking up from its slumber. It was 7:15am already and David just walked into the school complex. People who had heard the news about what he had done hailed the new Super Hero. How the news had gotten to anyone was surprising because no one knew any student was kidnapped or may be any pursuit had been made. But few who got the message later - the previous night had passed it around. The seniors and prefects gave respect to the man of the moment. “Superhero,” some hailed him while some nodded their head and gave thumbs up to appreciate his brilliance. He felt on top of the world. He had never received such respect before in his life, even with all the Jazz he had. He had never received hails before, such respect and more were still to come. “You are such a genius,” the Head girl walked towards him and embraced him. Truly, David was now a king. No one had ever received a hug from the Head girl except her school daughters and sons - bar her boyfriend. The prefects had never asked him to pick round or do any cleaning before except a teacher was present. He walked past the Head girl and the ever red-eyed senior Moses, the assistant-head boy. People feared him than the head boy and there had been so much chatters why he be made the assistant when the head boy wasn't as he Moses, acted with military prowess. A sign of who the head boy fits more but Moses wasn't as brilliant as the Head boy was/is. As he walked towards his classroom, his hairs stood at the back of his neck. He thought about what would happen today but first off, he's got a business to pursue. He entered the class, saw Izu and Baba 70, Peter and others who had gathered to laugh at the event of yesterday. They mocked the way the head boy and colleague had ran; the rate at which Izu punched Bala, nearly killing him and the evil spirit that had possessed him to act with such cruelty. “Omo guy, you nearly commot that guy nose.” “You for even commot him eyes self, so that him go learn wella. But I sure say him self no go try rubbish again,” another guy put in and Baba 70 laughed. “Guys, how e take happen yesterday na?” David went towards where they had gathered at the back of the classroom, offering everyone a hand shake. He stood as they narrated everything to him. “We hear say na you dey reign now for this school,” Baba 70 praised “be like say na you go be the second in command to principal for here now.” They all laughed as David later narrated his encounter with them. With about 20minutes remaining to the start of assembly, David excused Izu from the gathering and walked him to the back of the school building. “Guy I need your help o,” David started. “Wetin be that?” Izu asked, puzzled what David could require from him. David of all people. “See, I really like that Fatimah girl as I dey tell you now. I want make you help me.” David sat down on the sucker-way. His face had never been so serious before, perhaps Fatimahs beauty had captured his heart. Several line drew across his face that made him look old, more like the time he had thought about giving up charms/Jazz. Izu laughed so much that his throat nearly hanged and his laughter choked him, he coughed. “You funny die I swear. So na me you come see meet? I resemble person wey fit help you toast chick? Imagine that kind `chickala'” “Abeg Izu, I serious abeg. I need this girl. I don fall in love with her,” was David running mad already? He surely wouldn't be speaking from his mind. May be he was delusional. Izu thought carefully with the expression on David's face, he was serious. He reasoned since he had started rapping with David; he had never seen him so serious about a discussion, talk-less of a lady. “Mehn!!! That one go hard o. You know say this babe know book and she fine no be small. And as me dey like this ehn, I be dull man. How you wan come make I help you,” Izu threw into the discussion, some realistic facts to take into consideration. But was he right to give up hope because he was dull? David was deep in thought. What step does he knows about getting a girl? More so, one that was brilliant and beautiful like Fatimah. He had often had free p^ssy at his village where girls would come to the stream to fetch water or bathe. Those girls in their village offered free service to guys in the village everyday at the stream once it was getting to 6pm. Village prostitution, carried out with full intent but bar fund. He missed Badagry a lot and wished he was still there but it wouldn't have been possible to continue his education. What about the recent recognition he was getting or about getting? Although, he was some hero too at the village but nothing was compared to that which Lagos offered. “Abeg, just help me anyhow you think say you fit. I need to take care of this babe. I wan marry her.” David seriously was thinking beyond box. Take care of someone he doesn't even know he would get, talk less of marrying her! Sh1t was truly wrong with his thoughts. Izu couldn't help the laughter. What was David thinking about? Marriage?? `Be like say this guy dey dream mumu dream because of too much palmmy' but it was left for him to try his luck. Yap, he was ambitious and it's cool to be, - anything could happen when love is involved. “Izu serious na. Why you just dey laugh me like this? Pity my life abeg!” David pleaded for the first time with someone of his age. He had never had to plead with his mate before but love was breaking a man down; to rubble; extreme submission. “Okay, okay, okay!!! I go help you. You go write letter?” David rose up quickly from where he was seated. He was elated. “I no care anything abeg. I go do am but I no sabi book, how I wan take sabi write letter.” He felt as though Izu was trying to complicate his life the more. He became sober again. “Who tell you say make you write letter before? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! For your side self, I get hope how to hold biro,” Izu mocked. They both laughed. “You go gaz meet Femi o. Na him dey help me write all those kind love letter,” Izu spoke on “na him help me get Theresa for Junior School and Enore self na him.” “Okay okay okay! Thank you.” David hurried to move as though that was all he needed to know. He was too eager about his quest. “Guy cool down na. Why e dey do you for body like Ogogoro? Hope say this girl never `winch' you?” He mused. “Abeg where I go find Femi? Shey him don come school?” David evaded the st^pid question Izu was asking. “Be like say I don see him bag this morning. Make you check am around sha but wait make I advise you before you try rubbish.” He made David look a bit unsteady. He had never been warned before. What advise was Izu going to give him? “Wetin be that?” “You gaz runs this package on low-key o. You know say Peter and Clinton na padi and make e no be say e go cause gbege o.” Izu advised, trying to avoid betrayal of friendship trust. If any break-up was to come between Fatimah and Clinton because of David, he preferred it to be unattached to his personality. “Shey na that one you wan talk about?” David asked and Izu nodded “I no be small pikin na,” he concluded and they shook hands. David went in search of Adefemi while Izu went back to the classroom. T,b,c,...... |
