OPINION: Internship Should Be Mandatory For All Students In Universities. by Nobody: 5:59pm On May 26, 2015
So I got talking with one of the male interns at my place of work. Dude is a young chap in his late teens, working normally like a real staff (obviously with less tasking assignments). Apparently he is just rounding up his 2-month internship with the firm. At first I thought he was just from one of the polytechnics in Lagos but I got to understand that he's actually a student of Covenant. He said they do a a mandatory 2-month internship after their second year. He is actually studying Accounting so I don't know if this applies to other courses in the school.

Trust me in the short period that the dude has stayed, I feel he has learnt well enough, and I feel he would very well be able to apply the skills to his learning environment in class, hence helping him better understand what he's studying. Further more, this would very well help him in future right after school. I mean, many employers want people with experience, no matter how small. People need staff that can hit the ground running, and I do see this dude standing out after graduation.

I understand that this doesn't apply in Federal/State universities, so I think it's high time they made it mandatory for students in Federal and State schools (not just Polytechnics), regardless of courses being studied, to be made to go for internship right after their 2nd/3rd year in school. Trust me, the benefits are way much. The schools can take it up a notch by telling various companies to come forward if they need interns for less tasking needs, and they could pay them little. Students obviously would appreciate paying small sums, than a graduate earning such small sums.

And for the students who currently may not have such opportunities, once there's a long break or a national strike, please and apply to volunteer for a company. You never can tell how much it can help.

This is my opinion. What do you guys think?

Nice. Going for industrial training should be cumpulsory. Apart from the exposure and experience, it increases proper understanding of your course. Sadly, implementing this may be difficult.

Doesn't the current Industrial Training Programme cover this?

Nope. Covers only science courses. My point is all courses should be involved.

I absolutely agree! These days, experience in ones chosen field matters more than merely achieving an impeccable degree.

I am currently in search for one in Nigeria. Excited to visit the motherland grin

Op, don't be deceived by the choice of word. "Internship" in covenant university dictionary is the same as IT in other polythecnics and universities in Nigeria.

I'd like to think they both serve same purpose for students. IT implies the fact that only science students undergo this. Internship would be a mkre general term, encompassing all.

.

You are wrong there. College of education students go for IT. I have a relation that studied igbo language in college of education. She went for 6 months IT in an igbo town to make sure she could speak the language. Another that studied french was sent on 6 months IT to benin republic to improve on her french speaking. All these happen in government-owned colleges ofneducation. Covenant university just want to make their own look different; that is why they are calling IT "internship". Polythecnic students studying social scince, scince and even art courses go for 1 year and 3 months IT

Internship is good for Science students mostly Engineering .. but for Management students, its shit ... am on industrial training and I know wot am going through, there is no diff between me and a ERRAND BOY. Some low lives in the company will start telling you nonsense and maltreating you despite the fact that you are doing alot. 90% of my school mate are at home, they have searched and searched for placement without any success. My stipend s small that I can't even tell most of my friends.

Those students in school that were OLODO's back in school are the one's that are working in GTB and other top companies. Am stopping IT tomorrow, it shit to me.

And the most annoying part is that the companies think you don't need money.
