Why Do Nigerians Hate Commenting On Tech Blogs? by MissTechy(f): 3:58pm On May 27, 2015 |
Hello Everyone, I recently took a survey and I noticed that Nigerians would love to comment on gossips blogs about other people's lives and not on tech information that can benefit them in their workplace or homes. I am saying this because I know how hard it is to get comments on a tech blog given the fact that I run one (misstechy dot com), I have also searched top tech blogs in the country and noticed the same trend. Even noticed the trend on Nairaland, anytime a tech post is out on frontpage, people hardly comment or even view it. Is it that the contents are boring or what? Why would you choose to comment on other people's trouble but not on something that can benefit you in several ways - Oya Nairalander answer 40 Likes 11 Shares |

MissTechy:I just tire o. its a general issue in naija, where people tend to give more attention to less profitable things/issues. they cant stream a 2-min gadget review clip but can spend hours watching 'God knows what', and thats why we are far behind in science and tech. I think we should devise means and methods to 'forcefully' make Nigerians more interested in science & tech. 1 Like |

MissTechy:it's more like a 'culture' thing. Am not saying we should give attention to gossips even though people are more intrested in the latter |

Re: Why Do Nigerians Hate Commenting On Tech Blogs? by kishimi8(m): 8:02pm On May 27, 2015 |
yeah .. u said it .. very few don't copy and paste .. how ever I believe the problem lies in the lack of professionals to contribute on Nigerian blogs .. just a visit to Slashdot.org and you learn some new stuff everyday .. not something I see on naija blogs.. as an example , someone once posted some stuff about a bug affecting all Unix like oses on nairaland ,, but the comments and obviously the op did not even know what it was about ,,, no intelligent replies on the thread . . and Nigerian bloggers are only interested in clicks ,, just want traffic , nothing more ... so no quality but quantity ... 7 Likes 1 Share |

MissTechy: The problem is not from tech writers but from the readers. 1. Majority of them are not comfortable with technology related discussion, when did we start using technology in the first place. In other not to make a fool of them selves they simply do not comment. 2. Most people mostly go to technology blogs to learn and know what's happening but are not keen at been part of the discussion because technology related discussion is way out of their league. Have you ever asked why people doze off in maths class. 3. They simply do not care about technology of find it interesting. As for me I would rather create technology than talk about it. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

Matthewbriggs: So are you saying more than 90% of Nigerians re not smart enough to engage with Nigerian tech blogs because they might be too "tasking" |
Re: Why Do Nigerians Hate Commenting On Tech Blogs? by Matthewbriggs(m): 9:41pm On May 27, 2015 |
MissTechy: I never said 90% ... I simply talked about lack of interest in technology, and not knowledgeable enough to understand technology talk-less of making meaningful comments hence most do not comment. Views are what matters for tech bloggers not comments. |

I have a lot to say on this issue but i will try to keep it as short as possible. I think it has a lot to do with interest. Right from time Nigerians are not interested in technology , very few are. Tech blogs in developed countries get lots of comments simply because of the interest from the readers. But here , Most Nigerians don't even understand what you're talking about no matter how you simplify your language. In addition to that , Our "Useless" celebrities are not helping matters. If our celebrities can show o Public interest in "All things tech" , Nigerians will begin to show more interest. Nigerians just want to use technology. They don't care about the process involved. That's why they ask foolish questions sometimes. 3 Likes |

Matthewbriggs: Trust me, I actually talked with some of my fellow TOP tech bloggers in Nigeria and it is not just views they want. |
Re: Why Do Nigerians Hate Commenting On Tech Blogs? by Matthewbriggs(m): 7:54am On May 28, 2015 |
MissTechy: Their is a difference between what matters and what they want. Look at the key tends on most critically acclaimed tech sites like mashable, verge, tech crunch and our up and coming techcabal and techloy. Comments are not what makes them thick but no of views and following. Techcabal had to even disable comments, Forbes and mashable hide comments you have to click on a tab to open them up ... If you want engagement twitter is a good place to get it for your post. I think what is important in this context in terms of engagement is how many people share or like your posts. My point is don't fret of feel discouraged that comments are not flying in... Just keep posting quality content gradually you would gain traction. 5 Likes |
