Project Biro coming along smoothly With seven new hulls coming its way over the next five to six years, the SA Navy is keeping its cards close to the chest on personnel requirements for the new acquisitions. Armscor will start evaluating tenders for a new hydrographic vessel to replace the ageing SAS Protea at the end of next month. June 30 is also still currently the closing date for tenders for three offshore and three inshore patrol vessels for the maritime arm of service of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF). -Defenceweb It seems our dates were wrong, June 30 is closing date for the tenders - announcement of the winner will come later in the year 1 Like |

As you can see the hull is 100% finished, the gun has already been fitted, radar and antenna mast have already been installed, landing deck looks basically complete, so please please tell me, what will Nigeria be building? 3 Likes |

patches689: Patrick, nobody would pay $40 million for an obsolete Helicopter like the South-African AH. This is an indisputable fact. Not even the South-African government can afford them, hence their order dropped from 32 to only 12. 1. Given the Half-french AH, MI-28N, Apache and MI-35M. Countries in Africa would pick the MI-28N,MI-35m, Apache over the Half-french because they are proven Helicopters, with guaranteed availability of spares, and from trusted partners. It is basic common sense. Even in Africa, your Half-french AH which the SAAF cannot even afford, would come out second best every time. 2. The AH was built to fill the requirements of the SADF, and as well as for exports. As a result of the inability of the South-African government to meet it's financial targets, orders were drastically cut for the AH, and funding cut. - The decision to export the AH is as vital a requirement as the SAAF fielding them. If this isn't the case, it would not have been rejected by the 5+ countries it was offered to. 3. The Z-10, China currently operates 60+ in service, not 12. Pakistan was gifted 3 examples from China, and currently has an order for 20 units. - the Indian HAL LCH is still under-development. When it enters service, India would order over 180 examples, and South-Africa is been touted as a possible export customer. - The T-129, Turkey has currently an order for 91 units, again not 12. With Nigeria, Bahrain and Azerbaijan showing strong interests in the AH. Infact Nigeria is in the process of acquiring a couple units. At 40 million a unit, nobody, not even the SAAF is willing to pay that much for a sub-standard Helicopter. - The AH was designed to also be exported, exports is a very vital yardstick in determining the viability of the AH. Since nobody wants the AH, it is safe to conclude that the half-french is a failed French/South-African experiment. Like i always say........... that the truth hurts your feelings doesn't mean it's inaccurate. 1 Like |

patches689: Bwahahahaha .LOL. @Patches is does not know naval warfare, he thinks Type 056 frigate 1,300 tons ship has the same range with Nigeria's long endurance OPV of 1,800 tons. LOL....an OPV of same size as a frigate will have longer range because they are built for long patrol. The 2,000 mile is for light frigate, the OPV version for Thailands navy is 3,500 nautical mile range. Yet Nigeria's F-91 NNS Centenary is far bigger, we have 1,800 tons not the 1,300 ton of Thailand that has range 3,500 nautical miles. Nigerian OPV range is far far and far far far beyond range of your Soweto tiny tea-pot floating on bath tub water Warrior Class Strike craft MPV that you are falsely calling OPV. Look at this dude comparing an ancient rust metal tin can SAN 1970s gunboat with a NN 2014 stealth OPV that all full digital navionics, you don't know how many billion dollars Nigeria invested in patrol forces at sea? It's our navy's strength and your navy's weakness. Now stop this hilarious and humiliating comparison so your national pride does not get hurt in Pretoria, only Nigerian navy can use one warship to sail around Africa on one fuel tank without stopping to refuel on the way. We rule Africa in naval range. . 1 Like

patches689: . Rooivalk Remains 30 Years Obsolete. Fake Upgrades : There is NO PROOF that the Rooivalk computers or avionics were upgraded as proposed. No proof the money was release, no proof the job was done. The only certain upgrade was to add ability to use Mokopa missile which was never ordered into service. Next job was the over-heating cannon that was cooled from overheating, repaired, not upgraded. ZERO technology advancement. Same old gun Rooivalk remains 30 years obsolete....even Rwanda won't buy it ! "Denel Aviation finally handed over five new Rooivalk Mark 1 combat helicopters to the South African Air Force on 1 April 2011, after years of development, building and testing. The new Rooivalk Mk.1 is not much different to its old predecessor , the AH-2 Rooivalk. The cannons which used to be a bother on the older Rooivalk by overheating very quickly and preventing rapid and sustained fire, have now been fixed. The chief of the South African Air Force General Carlo Gagiano said, “ What is new is the Mokopa missile , which was test-fired at the Overberg range a long time ago and we had some very good results.” http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2011-04-04-rooivalk-the-next-generation-mark-1/#.VWZ7hvlVhBd "The investment comes despite the helicopter's builder, Denel, questioning the viability of the 23-year-old project. The rotorcraft's cockpit reflects an avionics and computer processing power system that is now two decades old. They are divided on whether the project is worth the effort. Some sources say it amounts to throwing good money after bad and paying for a Porsche to do a CitiGolf's job." http://www.itweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5449&catid=96:defence-and-aerospace-technology Rooivalk remains a 30 year obsolete attack helicopter. patches689: Shilka has 4 barrels and are radar guided to pin point target, even if the target is speeding 1,000 km/h like Hawk jet. SANDF does NOT have any CRAM anti-missile defence as at today 2015, the project is slowed down by lack of funds, and the target date of 2017 will be further delayed. SANDF has NO SINGLE CRAM defence today. FACT ! Nigeria has 16 Roland launchers, 2 missiles load each, 8 more missiles inside cabin with rapid automatic reload in 10 seconds. 10 missiles x 16 launchers = 160 missiles.....SAAF will die in seconds . |

patches689: 4 units of 20mm anti-aircraft cannon 6 units of 12.7mm heavy machine gun Radars for surveillance and fire control Now that's 10 anti-aircraft weapons with several radars on SAS Drakensberg in Ivory Coast, yet South African navy ran away from Nigerian Alpha jets in Seleka style race, you had 50 times better anti-aircraft defenses on that supply warship than Boko Haram ever dreamed to have, yet Bokos challenged NAF Alpha jets, South African navy failed to try it....ran away back home just because Nigeria showed 1% of it's military might....SAN + SANDF = Cowards of Africa.....Boko Haram has more courage than South African military forces . |

patches689: That is a Hind taking off? Taking off from tree top? The empty desert and trees below are an airbase? Envy is wrecking the shiit out of Patches. NAF Hind flies in Nap Of Earth almost hugging the ground inside combat zone to terminate the lives of Boko Haramites ! The Hind is successful with 2,500 units sold by 1995, now it's likely about 3,000 units of Mi-24/35 Hind sold around the world, yet the Russians do not have any boasting website for it, the Hind sells itself without noisy advertisement, but Rooivalk has no buyer outside SA, so you make noise about everything that is true and false to get buyers out of desperation. Airforce Technology website simply defines the Mi-35M Hind with one sentence "Modern state-of-the-art avionics." How many modern combat helicopters make noise about NOE capability? You think Apache and Tiger cannot do it? The NOE that was marketed on Rooivalk is fake, it was tested and failed, Rooivalk crashed. Mi-35 Hind is not making noise about NOE, yet it is doing it successfully in combat many times, the photo is now out to prove it, thanks to Nigerian air force.....look again at the NAF combat photo below and commiit suiicide o South Africa..... .

Henry120: South Africa can afford it - but the order was cut back when we cut back our military at the end of apartheid. 1. African countries chose them because they come in at around half the price of a Rooivalk. 2. Rooivalk was never built for export- and please provide proof of the "5 countries" that turned it down 3. And yet you said that China would have flooded the region with them - HAL for South Africa? Citation needed - Nigeria is not getting the T129 - Turkey still prioritizes defence spending, South Africa does not, hence we cut back on the rooivalk Rooivalks capabilities are well defined and you can see that it is worth $40 million - hence the Turks considered it right until the end of the deal And again, the Rooivalk was not designed for export - it was designed for the SAAF. Thus judging it by sales is pointless |
