I am saying this because I know how hard it is to get comments on a tech blog given the fact that I run one (misstechy dot com), I have also searched top tech blogs in the country and noticed the same trend. Even noticed the trend on Nairaland, anytime a tech post is out on frontpage, people hardly comment or even view it.


Is it that the contents are boring or what?

Why would you choose to comment on other people's trouble but not on something that can benefit you in several ways -

Majority of Nigerians are not techies and the TECHIES are too self-engrossed in their marginal achievements (compared to global trends) to bother commenting on emergent tech. Na soo soo School App, Bukateria App, MTN Recharge App, Blogging App.. the world has moved on.. catch-up or remain in your little pond

Lots of Nigerians comment on tech blogs.

Just because you cannot recognise them as Nigerians does not mean that they do not exist.

Part of the beauty of the internet is anonymity.

The problem is not from tech writers but from the readers.

1. Majority of them are not comfortable with technology related discussion, when did we start using technology in the first place. In other not to make a fool of them selves they simply do not comment.

2. Most people mostly go to technology blogs to learn and know what's happening but are not keen at been part of the discussion because technology related discussion is way out of their league. Have you ever asked why people doze off in maths class.

3. They simply do not care about technology of find it interesting.

As for me I would rather create technology than talk about it.

Just barely some minutes ago when the thread was placed on frontpage it already have more views than yours . You need passion to survive as a tech blogger, stop looking for comments or Ads just keep doing your thing your own way.

Interesting things always attract attention. Make it interesting. Avoid too much tech talk. Relate your posts to everyday practical things. Ask people for their opinion, not just giving yours. Show interest in what they have to say. Most Nigerians are not tech savvy so may not understand too much hard stuff.

Disclaimer: I haven't visited your blog before, so I don't know if you are already doing these.

So true. It's a general thing. Most Nigerians don't comment on blogs except it is popular or reveal browsing hacks or its about gossip. If you are in the business of waiting for comments then forget about it. If, however, you present stuff like above the people will definity bookmark your site to start with be ore commenting.

Funny thing is I'm about to start a blog on tech stuffs but the difference is showing how to use tech stuff to make money. Have already made up my mind about not caring for comments but that it helps someone somewhere.. Let me check your blog

Tech related stuff no dey benefit them!

By default, this generation of Nigerians abhor learning or anything that will increase their knowledge. But any thing that is centered on gossip, social media, celebrities, etc, they flock there like flies to a corpse. And that goes a long way to show the kind of youth we have in this country today.

i must say i am really impressed with your blog. It looks really good and there are interesting topics on there too. The only thing i can advise is to get ghost writers who dispute your claims or popular tech news so as to spark a conversation. After reading a story on your blog, i can either accept it or feel indifferent about it but if they is something controversial, you will get people talking. just saying

All they want to hear is Gossip, Cossy this, Tonto that.

We still have a long way to go. Mind you 85% of those using Internet in Nigeria lack what we call "Information literacy".

Check Facebook groups and page. Many Nigerians are living in hopeless faith, instead of we to embrace Technology, we're busy typing Amen on one useless post and celebrity fucking news.

As for me, I have embrace Technology and those that add value to my life. Me reading celebrity news is like walking on top the ocean.

heres a trick, if u want ppl to comment on your blog post just make your posts incomplete. ppl will comment asking you for questioins

because most Nigerians dont even read tech blogs....there 100times more people that read entertainment blogs and as a result 100times more of a chance to see comments

its a general issue in naija, where people tend to give more attention to less profitable things/issues. they cant stream a 2-min gadget review clip but can spend hours watching 'God knows what', and thats why we are far behind in science and tech.
I think we should devise means and methods to 'forcefully' make Nigerians more interested in science & tech.

Exactly, it seems very few people care about technology in Nigeria. They consume technology (they buy the latest phones and drool about the latest cars) but are not really interested in HOW these things work.

On NL, two of the loneliest forums I've visited are those for programmers and web enthusiasts.

This explains why we remain a bunch of consumers.

Just an idea I think might help for, maybe entrepreneur for instance. Try and relate your tech blog with what people need. For instance I will appreciate a tech blog that has to do with agriculture and agric marketing.

If Nigerians are not commenting on your tech blog, it is because you've done a poor job in marketing the blog. Make your blog interesting, dedicate time and effort towards marketing and other PR methods only then will you see an uptick in user engagement.

3. Do you offer freebies on your blog? Such as free software, PDF and so on...
4. How dynamic is your blog?

I suggest you stop blaming the consumer and invest more in your business.

Hey Abbey I just launched 3 months ago and I have an alexa rank of 974, reach them through socials, I offer freebies to commentators - ever month the top 3 commenters get N5000 worth of airtime to get data. - very dynamic.

Simple: tech awareness is still low in Nigeria.

As a career blogger, I also noticed that people don't comment on articles that are academic and technical.

Many of the guys that contribute to my blog got discouraged from writing because of low engagement their articles attract.


Another thing I noticed: In Nigeria, people see bloggers as no-do-gooders. They just don't want to associate with blog.

Also, people here are usually uncomfortable to comment on blogs. I was surprised recently, when after reading an article a contributor to my blog wrote on James Lafferty, former CEO of CocaCola West Africa, BAT etc, the man himself showed up (God knows how he saw the article - maybe through Google alert) and personally commented. I can't imagine a Nigerian Bank MD commenting on a blog!

I operate in the education niche through edugist.org, same problem...we're not hungry for knowledge, insight, analysis and personal growth related information, at all. As a jarushub loyalist, the poor or lack of engagement by readers baffles me, considering the intellectual prowess of your contributors. And these are busy guys and 'BIG BOYS'.

The articles I least expect are where I get comments in edugist, usually questions.

I once wrote an observation about an event I attended at Four Point hotel, days after, a senoir staffer of the coy that orgnised the event commented and mailed to meet me. Today, I do business with them. When Malala visited Nigeria, I reported it and she commented. During the Save School Initiative, aside reporting I wrote my opinion...UN convoy on education and former UK PM, Gordon Brown and her wife had to argue on my opinion via comment. To Nigerians, there are making the blogger a favor.

It get discoraging at times.

I believe if you search for blogs related to agric marketing you will find them. you can still get some info about it here on nairaland too if you look around.

Nice observation. I think majority of the internet user are more interested in topics like Politics, Entertainment and you know maybe all these type Amen thing on Fb..

As for me, I rarely comment on any blog because i don't like to register before i write a comment.

You don;t need to register to comment on so many nigerian tech blogs tho
