On getting to Nri,the compass throbbed harder against my palm like never before. By now I had already familiarised myself with the pain,all I did was grit my teeth.

We rode as fast as we could,only stopping to change direction according to the dictates of the compass.

When we got to the Town Centre,we found out that it was a cluster of houses,so we had to ride through people's porches.

We kept riding,following the directions of the compass...until the compass stopped.


"What could this mean?" I muttered to myself.

Egwu drew rein.


"What is that?" He queried,jumping down from his horse.

"The compass...it-it just stopped." I answered,trying to make sense of what had happened.

"Whoever gave you this compass should have given you a spare." Egwu joked,but the others would have none of it. They glared at him like he was some sort of madman.


"Okay okay,I was only trying to calm things down." He answered defensively,walking away from us to a tree stump a short distance away.

Aninye took my hand and examined the compass closely.

"It can only stop when we've gotten to our destination." She posited.

Filled with apprehension,I looked at the compass.



It pointed West.


I looked up,in the direction of the pointing compass,and I couldn't believe my eyes.

Egwu lay flat on his back,seemingly lifeless.


And over him stood a tall,huge man with a shorter companion.

"Who are you people!?" I yelled,"And what have you done with my friend?" I asked,looking at Egwu's body.

The others who were oblivious of what was happening turned,took it in and froze.


The shorter man spoke.


"You are standing face to face with The Eternal Warlord of Bussa,Jagaban. This is the end for you,Scimitar."

"Sheesh! Be quiet boy!" The shorter man chided me,obviously enjoying the drama now unfolding.


"Undo whatever you did to my friend or I'll make you pay!" I continued,my voice getting louder.


The short man chortled.


"Well it would seem our little friend does not quite appreciate the situation at hand." He drawled,turning to his companion,then he turned,his face expressionless.


"The Eternal Warlord of Bussa has the Orb you so seek,and in exchange for your friend's safety,he wants you to light up the Orb."



"How do I do that? I have absolutely no idea! If you can show me how,I'd be glad to light it up! Just let my friend go!." I begged,anger giving way to helpless desperation.


"You will do no such thing." A voice softly spoke behind me.

I didn't need anyone to tell me Aninye was objecting in her characteristic fashion.


"Aninye,I will have you know that this is our friend!." I reprimanded her,the anger slowly returning.


"Enough!" Jagaban roared.


As if on cue,everyone was silent.


"Your friend has poison in him,the deadliest in all the lands beyond the Great River. It kills even the mightiest of men in seconds. I mercifully gave your friend a week to live,for I know you are a stubborn lad. If you are sensible enough,you will do as I say. Take this egg,and smash it on the ground when you are ready to do as you are told."



He carelessly tossed the egg toward me,and as I caught it,a cloud of smoke enveloped us.

Baqqar looked around with unbridled satisfaction as battering rams drove into the city gates,shaking the earth beneath and trepidating the people within.

"How long will this take?" He queried,dragging back a soldier running past.


"I do not know,my lord.". The soldier answered. Baqqar waved him away,then turned toward the men trying to breach the gates.

On the other side of the gate,men from Idumuje were fortifying the already creaking structure,masked fear dancing all over their sweat soaked faces.

The Tuaregs are a people who boast of a vile King,and even more,an army so all-conquering and bloodthirsty that rebellious towns and cities were left desolate and corpse-ridden in the wake of their merciless onslaught. That was the main source of their fear. They still remembered what they did to the people of Koma.

Not too far behind,another group of men where passing weapons around,chanting a war hymn about death on the battlefield,and honour.


Back on the Tuareg side of the City Gate,Baqqar was losing patience. He longed to shed blood. He longed to watch people drop to the ground lifeless. He longed to see heads dismembered from the body.


And he so longed to crush the Scimitar of Thunder and Lightning.


A few metres away,unseen, Anyanwu shook his head in sadness. He knew people were going to die,that the sanctuary Idumuje offered was going to be shattered. He knew that Idumuje being crushed would distract Amadi. He would come running home once he gets the news,no matter how deep he may be in his quest. He instantly knew he had to do something.

Somewhere in the not-too-far distance,a vulture howled.
