I thought Nollywood was a term used in encompassing all the local/regional film industry we have in the country. Why the e-fight? For me, I think the Igbo guyz who called the Nigerian film industry by that name (Nollywood) had a nationalistic intention and envisioned a pan-african movie industry benefitting not just Nigeria but every African. These Igbo film makers traded their budding Igbo language classics into an English speaking entity that every Nigerian can relate to, irrespective of tribe and religion. Consequently, to reach out to a larger audience a cue from Achebe's Things Fall Apart was the only ingredient needed to make the difference. English language replaced Igbo as the medium of communication, Yet much emphasis was placed this time on culture. This singular move led to the renaissance of Nollywood.
But, the idea that Nollywood is purely an Igbo affair is false. That the Igbo nurtured it to this level does not underplay the involvement of other Nigerians including the Yoruba's to its growth. The likes of Kunle Afolayan and Tunde Kelani stand tall in the English speaking industry. It is fair to say however, that under the Umbrella of Nollywood, regional and ethnic based film industries exist side by side with their English counterpart. We have Yoruwood in the West, Kannywood in the North and the now lucrative Igbowood in the East. Minor native minority films as Edowood, Efikwood, Igalawood etc are also in existence.
