Obviously you haven't handled cash in your life because you fail to realise that a) they have been together since 2010 on the NFF U-13 programme which then became U-15, then U-17. b) They came through an MRI scan which even sometimes excludes people below the age cutoff because of how stringent its measures are and c) they have not for the most part "handled any cash" at all. With the exception of Success, the rest of the team is playing at youth teams and academies in Nigeria and Europe - they haven't even signed professional contracts yet. Except Sokari's salary at Enyimba (less than 250k/month) is your definition of "handling cash".

Let me give you one example. There is radio station in Abuja called brilla FM owned by Larry osamuje or some dude like that. I remember on one particular day the DH was playing Ghanaian music and listeners started calling in to the station to stop playing Ghanaian music. The calls were so many that the DJ had to stop! Flying Eagles striker Isaac Success said he believes the team will beat Brazil on their way to winning a first-ever FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.

The full interview:

QUESTION: How has it been for you in New Zealand in terms of the cold weather and the huge time difference?

SUCCESS: It has been great. Personally, the conditions are not my business for now. The business is to get the trophy to Nigeria. As a player you have to be ready, whether it’s hot or cold, you just have to give your best.

You talk about the trophy, the fans back home in Nigeria are also talking about it. Is it possible for this team to win it?

Yes, everything is possible with God and hard work. You cannot believe in God and not work hard. You must be committed.

So, this could be the time and place for Nigeria to win the U20 World Cup?

I believe when we beat Brazil in our opening game, we will get to the final.

What then do you know about Brazil?

Brazil are not extraordinary. From what I have seen in training with my team, the Flying Eagles, we are capable of anything.

You were the star of the 2013 CAF U17 African Championship, but unfortunately you were injured in the early games of the U17 World Cup the same year. So, this is only your second major tournament with this team. Are you under pressure to prove yourself again?

No. My focus is for the team to fulfill their purpose of being here in New Zealand. It’s not about the individual. So, I believe playing with the team and winning, is a lot more important than playing as an individual and losing. I’m ready to play with the team.

What has given you so much confidence with this Flying Eagles?

We are comfortable as individuals, collectively we are comfortable and we are comfortable with the technical crew as well. It is just for us to put our heads down and realise what we want.

What can you say about the other teams in your group?

No team is a threat to us in this tournament.

You must have watched the opening games of the competition, like that between the host team New Zealand and Ukraine. What are your impressions?

It was not a good display, but possibly this was because it was the opening match of the competition. I believe they will improve as the tournament gathers momentum.

You have made your debut in the Spanish La Liga this past season and even managed a goal. Are you satisfied with your first season as a full-time professional?

I am not really. I did not have enough playing time at Granada. But at least I am happy that we are staying up in La Liga and this will give me a second chance to prove myself if I were opportuned.

Are you staying back at Granada or are you looking out for another club? We know you are on loan from Udinese.

I am just a player and the decision is left for Udinese whether to recall me. If they do not need me, I will continue to play in Granada. I believe if I have a good World Cup, I will definitely get a good offer.

So, you are on the shop window at this World Cup?

This is the World Cup and even kids who know nothing about football will be watching. Players at U20 level are capable of playing in the top leagues across the world, so I am ready to do what I can do.

But you were not available for the team in the qualifiers including the AYC. What was the problem? Was it you or your club?

It was difficult, almost impossible, because my club were under pressure, we were not doing well and we wanted to fight to stay in La Liga and I was needed. That was why I couldn’t come to join the Flying Eagles.

But you are now back and ready to give everything for this team.

I’m ready because it’s been long I have been with the team and the players and coaches have missed having me around, almost two years now. So, I want to give all I can because I don’t know when I will get another call-up.

How fit are you because there were rumours you were nursing an ankle injury towards the end of the season?

I’m fine. I’m okay.

What qualities do you bring to this highly talented team?

They were not lacking anything even in my absence. But the coach believes in me.

What of your power, push and your speed?

No. It’s about scoring goals. Even before I came, Awoniyi has been scoring good goals. If you are a striker, you must deliver for your team. I am just opportuned to be in this team.

Does the thought come across to you that you could also feature for the Olympic team and the Super Eagles soon?

For now, no. My focus is the U20s and the World Cup now. If anything comes out of this, I will be lucky. In life, it is a step at a time.

What will be your message to the fans?

I promise I’m ready to work for this team. They should not expect anything big from me, they should expect something big from the team.

i dont know if the NTA on dstv will show d matches but the normal NTA on our tv's not dstv channels promised to air d matches. I haven't subscribed for dstv for 2 mnths now so I wouldn't know if the ait and NTA in dstv will show d matches. I watched Qatar vs Colombia earlier this morning 2am on NTA Abuja.

we didn't lose to Sweden in d under 17.we played 3 all in d 2nd game and walloped them 3nil in d semis. We only lost to CIV in d ayc in morroco.

I knew what I had achieved in life before I turned 20. I just turned 25 and I know where I am in life. I don't know why many Nigerians have a big problem understanding that just because they were still wearing nappies and rolling tyres at 17, that doesn't mean that other people didn't have the intelligence, foresight and ability to achieve great things at a young age.

These people are not hating on Iheanacho per se - they just hate looking at anyone who reminds them of their own uselessness and lack of success in life. Why won't they doubt his age when they see an 18 year-old from the same country as them who faced the same difficulties as them on the verge of breaking into the first team of one of the world's biggest clubs and becoming a global superstar?

They cannot deal with the reality - that they have underachieved in life and that all the excuses they create to make themselves feel better about their lack of achievement in life are all nonsense, and that other people are more intelligent and more capable than they are.

I faced similar boneheads when I came back to Nigeria to do my youth service. You would see 40-something year old civil servant earning N40,000/month as a 'Director' and feeling like he was a 'boss'. Then they saw me - a 23 year-old who attended the best schools in the world and had worked at the BBC and KPMG and was obviously ambitious and heading somewhere in life, and their stomach would start paining them. I know what I went through in that bush called Ekiti state.

Now I know where I am and what I'm doing and those people aren't even in my rear view mirror but everyday I still come across people who look at me like I cheated them of their money. They can't understand how come I have a fiancee. They can't understand how I have bought a brand new car from my own sweat while they're still managing their 2002 long Camry. They can't grasp how this young guy has the audacity to be so successful, that's the Nigerian mindset!

They cannot stand to see a successful young African who looks like them because it reminds them of what they have failed to achieve in life! They don't mind seeing a successful 18 year-old Brazilian or German. They don't even mind seeing Luke Shaw earning £100,000/week at Manchester United at 21 years of age, after all he is British. Let Mikel Obi earn £80,000/week at Chelsea and see the same people foaming at the mouth and hating his success.

I really hate this African mentality, this crabs-in-a-bucket mentality.

Why is it so difficult to see a young, successful Black man and just leave him alone or appreciate his success? Why must you hate on him? Does he owe you?
