The December deadline set by President Muhammadu Buhari for the termination of the presidential amnesty programme for ex- militants in the Niger Delta has drawn the ire of Niger Delta youths and former militants, with the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, and ex-militants under the aegis of Third Phase Amnesty, faulting the deadline.

IYC expressed disappointment that the President failed to address key issues dear to the Niger Delta such as clean up of the environment, implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP report on Ogoni and tackling the menace of oil theft which has greatly contributed to environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region which he promised to tackle during his presidential campaigns.

The Ijaw youth body, in a statement by its spokesman, Eric Omare, said: “We appreciate the fact that the amnesty programme cannot continue forever and therefore, must have a terminal date.

However, the questions on the lips of beneficiaries and stakeholders in the Niger Delta are: What would happen to those that have not been trained as at December, 2015 and those still undergoing training or have not completed their training?

“Terminating the programme will throw up challenges for beneficiaries of the programme who are still undergoing training and are at different levels of their training. We expect the Federal Government to address the fear of these classes of ex-agitators who are in different parts of the world and are worried that their trainings may be affected if the programme is terminated in December, 2015.

“The case of a substantial number of ex-agitators who have not been trained is even more worrisome. We call on the Buhari government to address these challenges before the programme is terminated.”

On their part, the Third Phase Amnesty ex-militants in a statement by their National Secretary, Tam Odogwu, described the statement as shocking, noting that the programme has contributed immensely to the relative peace and stability in the Niger Delta region, which has boosted the production and exportation of crude oil.

He said the that Niger Delta ex-agitators congratulate President Buhari for his smooth and peaceful swearing-in ceremony in Abuja.

“Indeed, it was victory for Nigerians and Nigeria in the comity of nations.

“Nevertheless, we are shocked by the statement made by Buhari as regards the Niger Delta. We want to unequivocally state here that we reject the deadline of terminating amnesty programme by December 2015.

“We are very ready to support Buhari’s administration but we will not support the plan to end the amnesty programme and will resist any attempt to do so because it will mean another round of injustice.”

These people have no brains really. What is ambiguous in what the president said?

Yes he said the amnesty is due to end in December (which is the date set by GEJ's administration). But the president went further to state his intention to still invest heavily not only in the projects but other programs currently in place. Instead of these people to be thankful and show appreciation, they are here spewing rubbish.

The amnesty programme in the Niger Delta is due to end in December, but the Government intends to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place. I call on the leadership and people in these areas to cooperate with the State and Federal Government in the rehabilitation programmes which will be streamlined and made more effective. As ever, I am ready to listen to grievances of my fellow Nigerians. I extend my hand of fellowship to them so that we can bring peace and build prosperity for our people.

And when you vandalize the pipe lines and engage in illegal refining such that you degrade your environment, why do you wait for a Buhari to come clean it? Why didn't you blackmail Jonathan to do it?

Really? These lazy rats want to be spoon-fed till eternity. I mean what rubbish!

The fact remains that these boys are lazy bums that did nothing to contribute to the existence of oil in Nigeria, their birth above an oil producing land is as accidental as Osama being born in Afghanistan. These militant terrorists should stop sounding like they are working and sustaining others when all they do is get drunk on ogogoro while waiting for free amnesty money and oil companies to come and pay their lazy behinds stipends for destroying their environment, which they still divert for their selfish purposes (anything from a new mansion to a new bottle of Seamans).

Buhari is one brainless illiterate freak accident waiting to happen ..How else could you describe the blatant disregard for social justice, equity or the dangers of plunging the mono economy into another round of hypoxia? This is not the best times to be a Nigerian soldier, after facing off BH in the desert, you are forced into a miasma of swamp and mangroove dangers to protect remote stretches of pipelines, the brainless freak is supposed to quench fires and not spark national conflagrations or maybe he be think this here is the 80s where analog technology limits battlespace in brackish swamp environment or cushions financial shocks and investor trepidation on the mono economy?...And the comical thing is the whole armed forces combined are not only too corrupt but are inadequately prepared (capability, strategically and tactically) and lack the minerals to engage swamp fighters in their own unique turf thus they cannot protect our pipelines from vandalism, so if then the militants descend on some exposed oil infrastructures, Nigeria might not afford to pay salaries for these soldiers never mind the rest of them civilians under government employment......The brainless president must find another critical development to play chicken with, not this particular one.We understand his twilight years bestows him the right to remain fearless and call bluffs but this quardroon illiterate must understand that we have younger generations who might suffer his recklessness.

Day don break for them. These guys should find something reasonable to do because it won't be business as usual again. #Ijawyouth. At 55yrs u're still calling urself youth. Nothing last forever. GEJ, PEJ, Mark, Sambo, FFK, etc can all confirm it that nothing last forever. So, make una park well jare.

These youths have become fat on free money. Now that change has come, they still wanna continue wallowing in their laziness. Resist PMB at your own detriment. The Amnesty programme has served its purpose. Let's channel the funds to better projects.

Vanguard and Sensational Journalism. So much for media house in Nigeria of today!

Vanguard! Buhari never set a date to end amnesty programme. Buhari simply stated that it is due to end in Dec, 2015. Buhari said and I quote:

"The amnesty programme in the Niger Delta is due to end in December, but the Government intends to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place."

Buhari said the program is due to end! He didn't say he is ending it. It means the program already has a lifespan even before Buhari came on board and he clearly stated that his administration will build heavily on the programs.

Pls stop misinforming the public and twisting words for sensationalism.

And on a side note, the Amnesty program is a useless program aiding the nin-challant and lackadaisical nature of the Niger - Deltan Youths. In no sane Economy will Grants/Helps be Barterlised in exchange to terrorist in other for them to drop their arms.

Terrorism will spill over if you don't speak up. - Malala Yousafzai

Let's be clear on this, PMB did not set the December deadline. It was set by the previous administration of GEJ so why should he extend it?

The North felt neglected over bokoharam by GEJ and Niger Delta would be neglected if PMB ends amnesty. GEJ 1-1 PMB. PMB should be careful lest he creates another insurgent.Imagine having Bokoharm and Militant bombing Nigeria at the same time. Na wahala be that o!
