1. The Cave School Carved into the side of a mountain, the cave is massive and beautifully detailed from centuries of exposure to the elements. Besides simple cave instruction, there are a few man-made structures, including wooden classrooms and a makeshift basketball court for recess. Guizhou is one of the poorest provinces in China. Miao people in the Southern part of Guizhou have made the best of their situation by opening an elementary school in a cave, aptly named Mid-Cave Primary School. The school was opened in 1984, and at its peak employed 8 teachers who taught 186 students who would otherwise have no education. Government closed the school in early 2011, stating that “China is not a society of cavemen.” 2 Likes

2. Solar-Powered Floating School in Bangladesh Of the 158 million people living in Bangladesh, around 66 percent live in rural areas. In 2002, it was estimated that more than one fifth of the country floods annually during the monsoon season, but extreme floods can cover up to two thirds. During the monsoon period, thousands of schools are forced to close, and many children miss school days. In 2007, an estimated 1.5 million students, or about 10 percent of those enrolled in primary school, were affected by floods. 1 Like

3. Train Platform School Inderjit Khurana a school teacher used to take the train to work. And each day, in the stations, she would come into contact with dozens of children who spent their days begging from train passengers rather than attending school. Khurana’s “train platform schools” aim to provide a creative school atmosphere and equip children with the basic levels of education necessary to allow them to work productively, enjoy many of life’s pleasures, and become positive contributors to their communities 3 Likes

5. Gulu School Gulu is a remote Chinese mountain village located in a national park filled with canyons, sheer precipices and overhanging rocks. The village’s primary school is probably the most remote in the world. Lying halfway up a mountain, it takes five hours to climb from the base to the school. The children who attend the school face a dangerous journey to reach it and must traverse a path that is only 40.6cm wide and which has a sheer drop on one side

9. No grades, no homework, no tests Not that the students had to go to any of these sessions. At this school, students don’t get grades, don’t have homework, don’t take tests, and don’t even have to go to class — unless they want to. “Free schools,” which had their heyday decades ago, operate on the belief that children are naturally curious and learn best when they want to, not when forced to. Today, the approach is getting another look from some parents and students tired of standardized testing, excessive homework, and overly rigid curriculums
