Austria just won their match against Panama by 2-1, I think Argentina might not qualify from this group because Ghana will beat them in about 2.5hrs from now. If they lose, it would be difficult for them against Austria. I have not heard much news from the Flying Eagles camp. I hope they have recovered from yesterdays loss to Brazil. I still tip Nigeria to go all the way to the finals. Im worried about them against Hungary though. If they can overcome North Korea and beat Hungary convincingly, they can beat Germans as well.  ....Go Ghana, beat the Argies. 2 Likes |

The All Blacks' famous jersey. The green and gold of the Australian cricket side. And the very simple yellow Brazilian football shirt. The Brazilian style of football is called Joga Bonito. It means playing the game without inhibition, attacking from all quarters with breath-taking speed and creating pure joy on the grass. Can you imagine the tens of millions of Brazilian boys who grow up dreaming of wearing that yellow shirt just once? Playing football on the beaches of Rio and back streets of Brasilia until it's too dark to see? That gives you an idea of the talent that exists on the Brazilian under-20 roster; those who have risen above millions of others to earn the right to represent their football-obsessed nation. But the Brazilians were just one half of the equation in their 4-2 win over Nigeria in New Plymouth yesterday. The impressive Africans paid no heed to their South American foes, matching them for large periods with no little panache of their own. Both of their goals were eye-catching in their construction and execution. Make no mistake; Nigeria are contenders. It was a brilliant game. A brilliant, brilliant game. It was also an advertisement for this tournament that no marketing budget could buy. Twenty-two exceptionally talented young boys who have probably kicked a ball since they were old enough to walk thrown together on a patch of grass and basically told to go for it. Two teams attacking one another using every trick available to them and thrilling the crowd with their freshness and spontaneity. The losing part aside, I love the Nigeria-Brazil game. End-to-end football. At one point, the commentator said, "These are proper football teams". When we scored the second goal and we were all over them for a third goal which Awoniyi missed before they immediately launched forward to score the equalizer, the commentator said he was not sure Brazil would come back into this game. It was an exciting game. I still rate the Flying Eagles very highly. 2 Likes |

[b][size=14pt]Don't crucify fumbling Flying Eagles goalie Enaholo - Ajiboye[/size]  Ex-Nigeria youth international Dele Ajiboye has thrown his weight behind embattled Flying Eagles goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo, who let in soft goals in a 4-2 loss to Brazil in an opening game of the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand. Ajiboye, who was part of the victorious team to the 2007 FIFA U17 World Cup, told AfricanFootball.com goalkeepers are prone to concede goals from mistakes not intentionally and that Enaholo should be pardoned for the errors against Brazil and encouraged for a better performance. "It is part of the game for goalkeepers to concede goals, though his errors were responsible some of the goals,” said Ajiboye, who was part of the U20 team to Egypt 2009. “That is football. All he needs to do is to be focused and not let the errors get the better of him. “Nigerians should forgive him for the errors and support him. The thing with these hapless critics is that they are always all out to talk when the plan fails. If we had utilized the attacking opportunities that came our way, we'd have won the game fair and square. That's actually the difference between the two teams. [b][size=14pt]Garba pressing self-destruct button[/size]  Nigeria’s U20 team head coach Manu Garba won the hearts of many when he led a group of starry-eyed youngsters to the title at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2013. Kelechi Iheanacho, Success Isaac, Chidera Ezeh and Musa Mohammed all shone through as Nigeria stormed to the title playing some attractive football that left supporters wowed. Garba also won the hearts of many with his philosophy of putting the team ahead of individuals. He was subsequently promoted to the under-20 team by his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and predictably, players who shone at under-17 level were moved with the trainer to the next cadre as well. Garba repaid the favour and justified the confidence reposed in him by the NFF as he led the Flying Eagles to the title at the 2015 Africa Under-20 Championship in Senegal. - Stellar names and broken promises - Nigeria won the title in Senegal without big names like Iheanacho and Success who had played crucial roles in helping Nigeria emerge as under-17 world champions two years previously. Their clubs would not release them for the tournament for varying reasons but Garba improvised and beat all comers in Senegal. It was however believed that the big stars would be available for the World Cup in New Zealand and so it proved. However, Garba insisted that he would stick to his traditions of putting the team and not individuals first. “Kelechi and the other players who were not (in Senegal for the AYC) will be given an opportunity to play at the World Cup but they have to fight for their shirt. “They will all be expected to prove themselves in camp before they get selected. There is no automatic shirt for anyone,” he told supersport.com in April. Garba also stated that any player who did not make it to the team’s camp in Germany would not be considered for selection for the final squad for the World Cup. However, club commitments meant that Isaac, Iheanacho and Simon would fail to make it to the team’s training camp in Germany. Garba would be faced with a big decision and he opted to include the three players in his final squad despite their failure to attend the training camp in Germany. - Upsetting the chemistry - The Flying Eagles played three tune up games in Germany winning all three in convincing fashion and impressing with a defined-style of football. Ifeanyi Matthew, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Kingsley Sokari held sway in midfield while Taiwo Awoniyi and Bernard Bulbwa coruscated in attack. The goals flowed and the football was easy on the eye. With the arrival of the “three big guns”, Garba was again faced with the decision of going with the tested and trusted or tweaking his tactics/formation. He opted for the latter against Brazil in Nigeria’s opening game on Monday and the Flying Eagles were picked apart. Iheanacho replaced Sokari in midfield while Bulbwa made way for Success. The result was a sometimes disjointed pattern which was not seen during the games in Germany. It was clear that the two newly introduced players who hardly trained with the rest of the squad struggled to seamlessly fit into the scheme of things. There were occasional flashes of brilliance (Success scored and Iheanacho hit the post) but at this level, everything has to be near perfect as there is often little margin for error. - Light at the end of the tunnel - The good thing is that Nigeria can still qualify for the knockout stages of the competition with wins in their next two preliminary games against Korea DPR and Hungary. This is quite an achievable feat but things must go according to script. Garba must revert to his old (and positive habits vis a vis choice of tactics and playing personnel) or the chosen players must step up to the plate. The loss, demoralising as it is, was against Brazil, one of the best sides in the tournament blessed with truly gifted individuals, and five time champions at this level. The Flying Eagles played well in spurts on Monday and could have scored as many as four goals against Brazil in the first half alone. Mistakes would be corrected by the astute Garba and an expected win against the Koreans would predictably see confidence levels rise. [b][size=14pt]FIVE REASONS WHY THE FLYING EAGLES LOST TO BRAZIL[/size]  After huge expectations from Nigerian football fans that finally, the country has the team that can will put old nemesis Brazil in their place in the U-20 World Cup (after losing three previous encounters and drawing one), it wasn't to be as the Flying Eagles were taught some bitter football lessons as they lost 4-2 despite taking the lead at some point in the game. Littered with some exciting talents, it was widely agreed that the current crop have what it takes to match the Junior Selecao, skill for skill and eventually secure our first ever victory against them, especially coming into the U-20 World Cup as African champions but it wasn't to be for the Coach Manu Garba-led side. Instead, what was served millions of Nigerians who decided stay up to watch the Group E clash was calamitous goalkeeping, poor defending and tactical ineptitude of Nigerian coaches on the big stage. The question on everyone's lips after the reality check was, what went wrong? Why did the team show promise in the early exchanges of the game before finally surrendering? Well, here are five possible reasons which probably cost the Flying Eagles a first win against Brazil at this level. USING THE QUARTET OF TAIWO AWONIYI, ISAAC SUCCESS, KELECHI IHEANACHO AND MUSA YAHAYA: The Flying Eagles are known for their brilliant style of counter-attacking football that was breathless and exciting to watch. And with the attacking formation put out by Manu Garba, that comprises talents like Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, Isaac Success and Musa Yahaya, it was expected that they should do enough to overrun the Brazilian defence. As expected, the Flying Eagles were all over their opponent as chances after chances were created with the team even coming from a goal down to take the lead. But it soon became clear that the coach made a mistake using all four players in one match, as there was nobody else to call from the bench when the team were in need of fresh ideas upfront. THE BRAZILIAN COACH ADJUSTED HIS TACTICS AT HALF TIME The Brazilians' intentions from the kick-off was to finish the game off as quickly as possible. They were so confident of themselves that they played a high pressing game that saw their defenders keep a high line. The approach seemed to backfire as the Flying Eagles ran rings round them, with breath-taking attacks which resulted in two goals and also missed chances. On resumption of the second half, the Brazilians were all over the Flying Eagles, as they crowded the midfield and made use of the wings effectively which eventually paid off with the only two goals in the second half going to the Brazilians. A FLYING EAGLES MIDFIELD THAT WAS NON-EXISTENT One major mistake that was made by the Flying Eagles coach was the idea of making use of just two midfielders in Ifeanyi Mathew and Mathew Mathew. At the African Youth Championship in Senegal, one of the reasons why the team was so difficult to beat was the compactness of their midfield. The midfield was the first wall of the defence as opponents found it hard to penetrate them. But why the coach decided to go with a two-man midfield against a technically gifted and tactically sound team like the Brazilians, baffles not a few. THE FLYING EAGLES DEFENCE WAS EXPOSED Prior to the start of the tournament, one area of the Flying Eagles which Manu Garba was having sleepless nights was in the defence. Even at the AYC in Senegal, the Flying Eagles were suspect in defence, but it was difficult to note this by their opponents as they were well screened by a well organized midfield. But against Brazil, they were all over the place as they couldn't cope with the wave of attacks coming from the Brazilians, no thanks to the midfielders who were having a torrid time containing them. JOSHUA ENAHOLO LET THE TEAM DOWN At the AYC, Joshua Enaholo was the standout keeper, making spectacular saves. Even when he was replaced by Ojo Olorunleke following a sending off in the second game, it was a general sigh of relief when he was back between the sticks in the semi-fianl. But on Monday, Enaholo was all nerves as he looked a shadow of himself, commiting one error after another. He was a liability on set pieces as the Brazilians discovered. Enaholo eventually capped a poor day at the office by conceding two cheeky goals which decided the outcome of the game. Having said all these, there is the general belief that the team can bounce back from this early set back as they are not going to be facing the Brazilians any time soon. And with what they displayed in the early part of the game against Brazil, not many teams will be able to withstand the attacking threat they possess. All the coaching crew need to do now is try and make amends ahead of their next game against North Korea.[/b] 2 Likes |

[b][size=14pt]Flying Eagles’ll Bounce Back, Says Anyansi[/size] As football fans fret over Brazil’s 4-2 thrashing of the Flying Eagles in group B opener of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association technical committee, Felix Anyansi Agwu, has assured that the team would bounce back from the initial setback. Anyansi, who spoke in Abuja stressed that there was no need for people to panic since the team has two games to correct the second half mistakes against Brazil. “What I can tell Nigerians is that they should not lose hope, I believe 100% that the team will bounce back. This may be the tonic.” Anyansi warned that it would be suicidal putting pressure on the team following the loss, adding that he had cautioned the crew and players against looking for scapegoat after the game. “I have spoken to the team and crew and my advice is that they should not lose their cool. It is too early to put pressure on the team. It is a psychological thing; they just lost a game which I believe they did very well in the beginning. Enaholo has being roundly criticized for his poor ball handling that lead to Nigeria conceding two second half goals, that helped Brazil beat Nigeria 2-4.
