mrham03:quite agree wit u..though ezeh is a striker, an inteligent and smart striker at that not a mid-fielder. On iheanacho's role in that game he was basicaly silent after the assist he gave, i felt manchester city av succeded in turnin him away from an attackin midfielder to an full attacker which affected his game to an extent, and judging from the 4-4-2 unsual formation of manu garba also contributed more to iheanacho's inpotency in that game. I just hope they bounce back..unfortunately North korea will be the victim of this forth comin mouling by the eagles. 2 Likes |

Success, Ifeanyi Matthew miss Flying Eagles training The Flying Eagles have put behind them the disappointment from the loss to Brazil and Tuesday morning’s training at the Manukorihi Park was highly spirited. However, striker Isaac Success, who on Monday became the first Nigerian player to score against the South Americans at this level of international football, and Ifeanyi Matthew stayed out of the training. Success complained of tightness on his hamstring, while Matthew is nursing a left foot injury he suffered in the Brazil clash. Giwa FC goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo was outstanding as an outfield player for the second team as he dished out some long-range passes. The team will have their final training for the Korea match on Wednesday morning. Tuesday cheer for the squad came when they enjoyed a meal of pounded yam and vegetable soup provided by Auckland-based James Rotimi and his family. Rotimi from the school of engineering AUT University drove down five hours with his wife, Funmi, and their three children to serve the Flying Eagles a delicious lunch. “My wish is that we get this type of lunch all the way to the end of the tournament,” dreamed defender Izu Omego, who has struggled to adapt with the dishes served in both Germany and New Zealand. Americans outclass hosts to advance USA are through to the last 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a game to spare after a comprehensive 4-0 win over hosts New Zealand at Auckand's North Harbour Stadium. The margin of victory in no way flattered Tab Ramos's impressive side, who became the first side to advance to the knockout phase thanks to a brace from Rubio Rubin either side of goals from Emerson Hyndman and Paul Arriola. The Americans were the more accomplished side from the very start and the warning signs were there for New Zealand when Arriola forced Oli Sail into an fine save inside five minutes. From the resultant corner, the deadlock was broken, with Rubin converting from a matter of centimetres after Bradford Jamieson IV had turned a Matthew Miazga header towards goal. The Junior All Whites looked vulnerable every time the US attacked and had Sail to thank for keeping them in contention when he pulled off a tremendous save to tip away Cameron Carter-Vickers' curling effort. But the Kiwi keeper soon went from hero to villain. With 12 minutes until half-time, he spilled a seemingly routine through ball under pressure from Rubin, allowing Hyndman to gleefully take advantage with a low shot into the now-partially guarded net. Sail went some way to atoning for his error two minutes into the second period when he denied the lively Rubin, but USA's pressure was unrelenting and it was no surprise when they moved out of sight. The goal that made sure of the points was a thing of beauty too, with Paul Arriola racing through on to a fine pass from Gedion Zelalem and drilling home an inch-perfect right-foot shot off the inside of the right-hand post. New Zealand did carve out some late chances to claim a consolation, the best of which was headed wide by captain Bill Tuiloma. But their night of misery was rounded off with six minutes left to play when Rubin capitalised on defensive confusion to sneak in between Jesse Edge and Adam Mitchell and convert from close range. The hosts will now hope for a big win in their final Group A match against Myanmar to keep alive their hopes of advancing, while USA can enjoy their encounter with Ukraine safe in the knowledge that their place is assured. There was a lot of panic in the first game, too many mistakes. I believe, once they get a win under their belt. they'd relax and play. We should consider getting idowu back ... Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, had no positional discipline. The biggest blame in my opinion, goes to picture boy, captain, Enaholo and Ifeanyi Ifeanyi but we know they can play better. We will play brazil in the final. That's my prediction if Brazil get there. 3 Likes |

Ghana leave Argentina in trouble Record U-20 World Cup champions Argentina suffered their first defeat in 19 FIFA U-20 World Cup games as Ghana secured a heart-pumping 3-2 win in Wellington. Goals from Benjamin and Samel Tetteh put the African side in command, before Yaw Yeboah's penalty seemingly sealed the result, though late Giovanni Simeone and Emiliano Buendia goals meant a tense finish, but nothing more. A meeting of the two heavyweights in Group B, once the pair got into their stride they put on a show of attacking football the fixture warranted, with 44 shots on goal across 98 minutes of end-to-end action. Samuel Tetteh was the first to test Augusto Batalla in the Argentine goal, who was set to have a busy half. However it was the South Americans who would come closest in the early exchanges, with Adrian Cubas' low shot forcing Lawrence Ati into a fine save, before Angel Correa worked his way into the box only to lose his balance and fire over. The pendulum swung the way of Ghana from there on though, with Clifford Aboagye and Godfred Donsah forcing Batalla into saves. On the stroke of half-time Ghana found the breakthrough. A quick break saw the ball rolled into the path of Benjamin Tetteh, with the Tudu Mighty Jets man's fierce deflected shot near-unsaveable. Samuel Tetteh almost made it two in stoppage time, but Batalla's save kept the gap down and Argentina flew out of the blocks when they returned. Simeone directed Leonardo Rolan's cross just wide, before Rodrigo Moreira's header forced Ati into one of the saves of the tournament so far. The six-time champions were on the front foot, but they suddenly found themselves shoved back off balance after a lightning break. Samuel Tetteh led the counter and, with Aboagye in support, the ball was rolled into the path of the Black Satellites captain who stroked it into the far corner. While it looked a tall order for the South American champions to redress the balance, that prospect disappeared almost entirely when Facundo Monteseirin brought down Samuel Tetteh in the area. Yeboah slotted it away to leave the Africans looking in control. A rare error by Ati gifted Simeone a simple goal and it looked too little to late, but continued pressure saw Emiliano Buendai halve the deficit and mean Ghanaian nails were chewed in the stands. But time ran out and one of the tournament favourites now faces a real struggle to reach the last 16. The cat is firmly among the pigeons in Group B. 3 Likes |

Late Luchkevych lights up Ukraine “I'm still feeling a bit heavy after the long flight. All those changes of time zone have meant I'm not in top condition.” Out of context, this self-assessment sounds like the excuse of someone who has had a bad day at the office. But coming from Valerii Luchkevych, a man who helped transform Ukraine from a team lacking cutting edge to one operating with surgical precision, it makes you wonder what's still in the locker. If helping orchestrate a six-goal second-half avalanche against Myanmar is him operating without firing on all cylinders, fans are in for a treat when he's fully operational. Following the goalless draw with New Zealand in the opening game of the FIFA U-20 World Cup it was evident that the Eastern Europeans were short of that extra spark going forward - the cog to get the watch moving in unison. The only problem that day was that wasn't even in the same country as his team-mates. Just over two days before the tournament kicked off, Luchkevych had sat on the bench in Warsaw at the UEFA Europa League final. Sadly for the Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk winger, his side fell to a 3-2 loss against Sevilla, meaning his trip south wasn't undertaken on a post-victory high. But aside from a bit of jet-lag, he insists there is no cup final hangover. “Of course it was a real disappointment to see us lose in Warsaw,” he told FIFA.com. “But I knew I was flying to New Zealand so I've put it behind me and it won't be on my mind while I'm out here.” Luchkevych touched down at half-time in the match with the Junior All Whites and agreed with coach Oleksandr Petrakov that he would have to wait until half-time against Myanmar to make his World Cup bow. But his impact was almost instantaneous. After providing a helping hand for the opening goal shortly after his introduction, he truly announced himself three minutes later with a delightful chip over Myo Min Latt. When complimented on the quality of that finish, the bashful 19-year-old from Zaporizhia could only muster a smile and an embarrassed laugh. On the field, though, his feet did plenty of talking. It took just another three minutes for him to sparkle again, bursting through the middle and firing in a shot, the rebound from which was tucked away by Kovalenko. It capped off a gobsmacking six minutes of fluid football, after a frustrating goalless two hours, and goalkeeper Bohdan Sarnavskyi took advantage of a moment of inaction to run upfield to hug Luchkevych. “He knew we had won at that point,” the midfielder explained. The winger's work wasn't done though, as a delightful pirouette inside the area saw him set up Artem Bieseidin for their fifth. He should have had a brace of goals to go with his pair of assists too, but after he dancing around Min Latt his goal-bound shot was beaten off the line by the arm of Thiha Htet Aung. Nonetheless, he was simply happy to have made his mark. “It's great to know I was able to come on and improve the team,” he said. “Goals, assists, they're all the same to me if we finish the game on top.” He paints an image of a squad bound by friendship, and with the width he provides serving to stretch opponents, his team-mates should have space to flourish in their final Group A match against USA. “A result like this is always going to leave you feeling confident going into the next match. We will just keep trying to get the wins and see how far it takes us.” With a few more good nights of sleep, Ukraine may have Luchkevych at his peak. Then, who knows what they can achieve? |

Did anyone notice how Brazil had the same routine for every corner but it was not picked up.. They draw the player on the first post out by using a runner... This prevents the man on the front post from clearing the corner if it comes low.... Every corner went to the same place. Someone on the bench should have picked that up. 3 Likes |

Argentina falter as US lead last-16 charge THE DAY REPLAYED – The goal flood keeps flowing. After the first full round of group matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup supplied over 40 goals, the second began in similarly free-scoring fashion. June 2's four encounters, spanning Groups A and B, saw the eight teams involved share out 18 strikes – much to the joy of spectators catching the action first-hand on Kiwi soil. Top marks for an emphatic win must go to USA, whose solid and ruthless 4-0 demolition of hosts New Zealand made the Stars and Stripes the first team guaranteed a berth in the Round of 16. Goals from Rubio Rubin (2), Emerson Hyndman and Paul Arriola did the damage in Auckland, putting Tab Ramos’ charges in the next phase with a Group A game to spare. Argentina, in contrast, now find their backs to the wall after going down 3-2 in a thrilling contest against Group B rivals Ghana, a result which leaves La Albiceleste on just one point (from their opening 2-2 draw with Panama) and the Black Satellites well placed with four from their own two games. Six-time champions Argentina must therefore go all out against Austria in their final match, the Europeans having moved on to four points themselves with a 2-1 success over Panama. Results Group A Myanmar 0-6 Ukraine New Zealand 0-4 USA Group B Austria 2-1 Panama Argentina 2-3 Ghana Goal of the day Austria 0-1 Panama, Fidel Escobar (6) On the competition’s opening day, this spot was filled by Panama’s Jhamal Rodriguez versus Argentina and, today against Austria, Los Canaleros were at it again. This time, though, it was Fidel Escobar taking his turn to pull a strike out of the top drawer. Picking up the ball in midfield and driving forward, shaking off an opponent in the process, the muscle-bound Escobar played a neat one-two with Jesus Gonzalez before reaching the edge of the box and sending a missile flashing past Austrian keeper Tino Casali and into the top-left corner. Hardly the kind of goal you would expect from a central defender. Memorable moments A super sub Exhibiting caution aplenty and putting a priority on defence, Myanmar set out to contain Ukraine by using five defenders and two holding midfielders. Witnessing this tactical approach from the stands were some 2,000 schoolchildren who, with the strategy proving effective in a goalless first period, soon abandoned spectating in favour of chasing each other around the tribune. The half-time introduction of Valerii Luchkevych, though, changed everything. A team that had been lacking a cutting edge was suddenly able to rack up six unanswered second-half goals, serving to keep 2,000 youngsters firmly glued to their seats. By the grace of Jaime Though going down to a narrow defeat against Austria, Panama still required a memorable second-half performance from keeper Jaime de Gracia to prevent a much heavier reverse. Trailing 2-1 and chasing an equaliser, the concession of a 64-minute penalty was another blow for Los Canaleros. Yet after Florian Grillitsch seized the ball and shot low towards the right-hand corner, there was De Gracia to guess right and keep his side in the hunt. Two quick-fire red cards for Panama later and another penalty for Austria, this time Markus Blutsch stepping up to the spot. And despite aiming left this time the result was the same, Austria denied by De Gracia, who handed his team a sliver of hope with eight minutes still remaining. Maybe next time In only the sixth minute against New Zealand, USA’s Bradford Jamieson IV wheeled away as he prepared to celebrate the Stars and Stripes’ opening goal. However, with the ball about to cross the line, team-mate Rubio Rubin grabbed the final touch – and the glory. In 19 minutes’ time came another opportunity for Jamieson who, once again, fired at goal, prepared to celebrate, and saw the ball blocked by… Rubin! And while the States’ No9 later helped himself to a second strike, Jamieson’s wait to open his account goes on. The stat 19 – Prior to the Ghana loss, this was the number of consecutive games Argentina had gone at the U-20 World Cups without defeat in open play, going all the way back to a 1-0 reverse versus USA at Netherlands 2005. The words “We’ve come here to win games. I told the lads that we’ve got a very talented team, but we can’t afford to get carried away. Our first game was tough and this one wasn’t any easier. We’re very pleased to have sealed qualification,” Tab Ramos, USA coach. Next matchday Wednesday 3 June 2015 (all times are local) Group C (Hamilton) Qatar - Portugal, 16.00 Senegal - Colombia, 19.00 Group D (Dunedin) Mexico - Uruguay, 16.00 Serbia - Mali, 19.00 |

Quotes of the Day Quotes: Argentina-Ghana Humberto Grondona, Argentina coach We don’t like to lose, nor are we used to it, but we’re still alive and we still have a chance in this tournament. Now we have to focus on the positives. It was good to see that we didn’t give up and managed to close the gap to 3-2 after going 3-0 down. I must admit that Ghana really surprised us, and now we’ve got to win the next match. The good thing is that we now know we’re in good physical condition and can keep playing at a high tempo even at the end of a game. Sellas Tetteh, Ghana coach The first couple of matches at a tournament are always tough. We analysed the Austria game in detail and did a much better job today. Our minimum target is still to reach the semi-finals, and it won’t be difficult to achieve that if we can continue to deliver the kind of performance we produced today. I’m very happy with today’s match. I was particularly pleased with Samuel Tetteh – but football is and will always be a team effort. Quotes: New Zealand-USA Darren Bazeley, New Zealand coach Today didn’t go as we wanted it to. We conceded a goal early, that hurt us and made the game very hard for us. We came into the World Cup to win games and go through to the next round. But we are still in a good position now: If we win the last game, we are at four points and should go through to the next round. The USA has very, very good players. It is a massive challenge for us, if you come up against a country like the USA with those players, that were quite impressive today. To compete at this level, you need to be mistake free and have to have a very good day. Tab Ramos, USA coach I’m very happy with the team and happy that we got through the first two games. The team did a good job today. I think we played relaxed, the combination of players we have on the field is a good one. We wanted to find space in between the opposing lines and created a lot of options. The game opened up early for us, we wanted to open up the field as fast as possible. We came here to win games. I told the boys that this team has a lot of talent, but we have to take it one at a time. The first game was difficult, this one was not easier. As a nation we normally don’t progress so quickly, so we are obviously very happy about that. Quotes: Austria-Panama Andreas Heraf, Austria coach Today we missed another chance to close out the match quickly, and although that’s also the only criticism I have of my team, it’s something we urgently need to work on. We’re competing at a World Cup and at this level you have to show a certain amount of guile. Otherwise I’m extremely proud of my lads, of course, and I really hope that these four points will be enough to see us through to the last 16. I’d love for us to be able to stay in New Zealand even longer. The experience you gather at a tournament like this is worth its weight in gold. Leonardo Pipino, Panama coach I’m proud of my team today despite the defeat. We gave it our all and never gave up even when we down to nine men. Naturally our goalkeeper [Jaime de Gracia] deserves particular praise for writing his name in the history books and saving two penalties – unbelievable. Of course we wanted to win and that will still be our aim against Ghana. We’ll never give up, and that’s what makes us so strong. Quotes: Myanmar-Ukraine Gerd Zeise, Myanmar coach Obviously we only had the power for one match. The European teams play in another league and we cannot follow. We are too blind and we do not have the experience, that's absolutely clear. It was a disaster and this tournament has come too early for us. We cannot follow these teams, no chance. My team was too poor. It was just like the USA game, in the first 15-20 minutes of the second-half we gave the game away. We must be realists, the party is over. I must apologise to the Myanmar fans, I am responsible for this disaster, but I can't turn a cyclist into a racing driver. Oleksandr Petrakov, Ukraine coach I'm very pleased with the game and the result. I had planned to bring [Valerii] Luchkevych at half-time ahead of the game, as we were lacking speed. We had agreed that he would start the second half and he really improved our game. Like in the New Zealand game, we struggled to score our chances in the first half, but this clearly changed after the break. That's why we play football, to make people happy. |

If Success is not fit for the Korean game, I say Coach Manu Garba and his crew picks Nacho to lead the attack. We saw how he has developed into a top mask man at Man City. No doubt, Awoniyi is a great striker but I feel Nacho's finishing accuracy is ahead of him. I prefer Awoniyi coming in as a Super Sub, just as he did in the friendly games. Nacho playing any other role will make us miss the development he gained at the Etihad Campus of Man City. |
