9. The palm Islands are two artificial islands, Palm Jumeirah and palm Jebel Ali, on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As at November 2014, only Palm Jumeirah has been completed. This island takes the form of a palm tree, topped by a crescent. When complete, Palm Jebel Ali will take a similar shape, both islands will be host to a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centres and will add a total of 520 kilometres of non-public beaches to the city of Dubai. The creation of the Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, the Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. A third island was planned and construction started, but this project was later remodelled and renamed to Deira Island. The Palm Islands are artificial islands constructed from sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf by the Belgian company, Jan De Nul and the Dutch company, Van Oord. The sand is sprayed from dredging ships, guided by a Global Positioning System, onto the required area. The spraying process is known as rainbowing because of the rainbow-like arcs produced in the air when the sand is sprayed. The outer edge of each palm's encircling crescent is a large rock breakwater. The breakwater of the Palm Jumeirah contains over seven million tons of rock, each rock was placed individually by a crane, its position signed off by a diver, and given a Global Positioning System coordinate. Palm Jumeirah was built entirely from sand and rocks (no concrete or steel was used to build the island). This was done in accordance with the order of the Prince of Dubai, who came up with the idea for the Palm Islands, as well as their design. *.5.5 million cubic metres of rock brought from over 16 quarries in Dubai. *.94 million cubic metres of sand brought from deep sea beds 6 nautical miles from the coast of Dubai. Feraz: The only problem we have in Nigeria or Africa at large is corruption and greed. We value our pockets more than lives of fellow citizens, more than our names, integrity and reputation. But whites values names, lives, history, record, integrity, and reputation. Until we can have this mentality, we will never move forward. 84 Likes 10 Shares |

12. Some of the world's most expensive Airports. ▶ Kansai International Airport. $20 billion The Kansai airport serves the Osaka, Japan area and is built on a 2.5-mile-long artificial island that is designed with a large sea wall to protect it from waves and other natural issues. The design has helped it to survive the 1995 Kobe earthquake. The airport features a bridge that was built at a cost of $1 billion and is made to help get people onto the island. A third terminal for Jetstar flights will more than likely cause the $20 billion total to go up. ▶ London Heathrow Airport. $10.5 billion. ▶ Beijing Capital International Airport. $8 billion. Much of the total cost of the Beijing Capital International Airport came from the$3.8 billion expansion at Terminal 3 in recent years. Terminal 3 has 3.2 million square feet of space, more than 70 restaurants and a baggage area that handles a large barcode-based system for handling materials and can take in more than 19,000 pieces in one hour. The expenses are extremely high but the airport can take in 80 million people each year. ▶ Dubai International Airport. $6 billion.
