I guess the ex-minister did not buy that rolex with his money, it was stolen money from Nigeria that he used in buying it and the other items worth 9 million naira supposedly stolen by his house boy. Not bad a thief stole from a thief just that one thief is a government thief so he can punish the other.

Bill Gates once bought a whole neighbourhood after he paid off residents there just because he wanted to have privacy and believe it, he only stays in one of the houses. To answer your question, it is simply because they have the money.

Who told U that he's well paid? Some of those useless rich pipu are stingy lot when it com to money.A colleague is looking for a housemaid she'll pay btw 9/10k(isn't that wicked?).Come to Ajah, dey pay those pipu meagre/peanut salary. If u can't pay Ur domestic staff reasonable salary,U are wicked and deserve to be tapped.Simple.

Awwww. That's bad tho. But then again, that doesn't justify his act of stealing. And to think he's 29, I dont think he'll be so daft to accept such little pay, when he can easily sell stuffs on the road and still make more money. You cant compare the age of the housemaid your colleague wants to get, to this man. 9k to 10k is small tho.
A formal minister will pay well, might not be too well, but manageable.

He should have opted out honourably. Remember there should be dignity in labour. He was just being greedy sha. angry

11 million naira watch. I'm sure d ex minister is just seeking attention. Cos if he can afford that sum for a wrist watch,he can afford to keep silent about it. My thoughts though.

Many multimillionaires wear $100 watches.
Bill Gates the richest man in the world wears a $10 wristwatch

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/sep/30/bill-gates-admits-i-wear-10-wrist-watch/

More often than not those who have had money in their family for generations are more conservative. It is insecure parvenus who feel a need to make a statement with ostentation. That is the real poverty mentality when one needs to show off to validate one self.
Really rich people realize wealth is an opportunity and responsibility to change society not to consume vainly.
If you give a person with poverty mentality a billion naira very soon he will be poor because he will start buying 50 million naira wristwatches

My guy.

Dont be fooled by all these publicity stunts. Yes they wear $10 watches but to make certain points at certain times. You cannot tell me that you will go to Bill Gate's wardrobe and not find a US$50k watch lailai. Leave that one. Beyond wealth my brother there is class and there are certain levels of class that US$10 or US$100 cannot get you no matter how prudent you are. It is for this reason that you will not go to Bill Gate's house and find that his sofa is US$150. Because certain things will spoil their brands. They have to balance it all.

It is not what you wear that gives you class. It is what comes out of your mind and its value to others. There is no amount of money in this world that can buy class for a parvenu. This is a common mistake people make that wearing designer clothes or other exclusive trinkets will help buy class. This is a futile effort of small minds. If anything it only makes the possessor of the money to display crassness rather than classiness. You might as well take a pig and put a diamond necklace round its neck

My guy, I agree totally that class emanates from within. So what class does for you is that when you have money, it sets you apart from others who have money but lack class. Don't gawk. Class will amplify the effect your money should originally have because it is not something anyone can buy. And everybody can buy a $10 watch

Go and sell the most expensive thing you have and start wearing only cheap stuff because many other people cannot afford to have what you have.

I AM NOT YOUR GUY!!!!

People chase money for different reasons. If I have an extra unneeded 11 million naira I would rather go to General Hospital and pay the bills of those who cannot pay than buy a wristwatch. If I do not feel like charity ,I will look for hardworking small entrepreneurs and lend them the money to grow their business.
To my way of thinking money confers a responsibility to improve society, the more you have the greater the responsibility .
If I am to be "set apart" that is how I want to be set apart not by my consumption but my contribution. I am very comfortable in my skin and do not care to be set apart by what I wear, no one will remember in 10 years what kind of watch or shoes I wear. We are all different . As a matter of personal policy my body is not used to advertise ANY designer labels

Not everyone wants to be set apart from others and certainly not by things money can buy for them. That may be attractive when one lives in extreme poverty. Do you know the meaning of the word "gawk" ? That is the sort of thing that we mean when we talk of class.
Designer clothes, and other shiny things are just a way of managing an inadequate ego and dealing with feelings of inadequacy. I do not pick my role models because of what they wear or drive. When I think of any person and say I want to be like that person it has nothing to do with money. Everything you have said is reflective of the "poverty mentality" you talk about.

I think one of the greatest skills a human can have is the ability to read other people, those people who train themselves to judge and evaluate others by their dressing are very far astray.

When you have the wealth enough to buy the jewellry as well as enough to help other people, kindly go ahead and starve in order to ensure everyone is ok.

I know a bit about watches and have had my own share of indulgence when I was in the world,it is vanity but I do no criticize those who do such things ,it is a part of human development. There is a time when sucking the thumb is the most important thin in a person's life and then they move on. As far as watches like Rolex e.g go ,they retain a significant amount of value over time and there are limited editions that actually go up in value with time and may be considered investments rather than indulgence. Most however will lose value and so if one really wants to show off buying a second hand Rolex might be an option. There are also very good counterfeits which in some scandal cases have found their way into reputable high street shops.
It is a difficult ethical conundrum to juxtapose this against suffering millions e.g if you have the money to pay for a Harvard education is that better than buying a Rolex (while millions starve) etc.
My approach is to choose my own standards and let others choose theirs.I will not wear such a watch because I consider it does not offer "value" for money but others may get "value" from the "feeling" of owning such. Fortunately for me I do not have an appetite for such feelings but I understand them. There are others who may pay a "penance" to deal with any guilt they may feel for such indulgence e.g whilst some have no such guilt .Humans are complex besides it may even have been a "present" government officials get expensive "gifts" all the time.

Ok.

Self righteous Nigerian.

My guy, lets talk about this when you have N1bn. Before then, it will be easy for any one to come and rant about how much of a burden he carries for others in his heart and for that reason he is willing to forgo any luxury just to satisfy others.

Your reactions and the tantrums you are even throwing show that you lack the class we are talking about. SOmetimes when you are unable to imagine the enormity of what you are able to achieve and have, you castigate others who have and make it seem like they are wasteful because they invest or buy some things they like. You assume that someone who has an N11m watch hasnt spent much more helping people. But because of people like you, the good deeds people do are not heard as loudly as when you hear that others steal their expensive watches.

My guy. Go siddon.
