Nigerians don't believe in themselves when it comes to technology, they will always go for foreign gadgets no matter how inferior it is.

For that reason alone you guys should forget development but rather keep dreaming about it.

With all this space booking how are we going to move forward? @ Op in those countries mentioned you will notice that there are actually IT professional bodies that help promote the growth of IT in those societies (example :Bcs, British Computer Society) , something that is sort of lacking in Nigeria. If the bodies could follow the type of model of the BCS where members interact often, network and exchange ideas, things can and will get better

IT professionals should be creative and not await go8. Job

Thats just the only problem with Nigerian mentality.

They are always looking for where to work.

To the extent that even IT professionals are also looking for jobs.

What an insult.

Lemme give you programmers a tip.

There are a lot of programming languages.

The programming languages that pay are not the type of languages that lay Nigerian programmers learn.

They want to learn html cds javascript php.

Then they apply to be the ceo of Microsoft.

You need to be very very creative as a programmer , you must have the uncanny ability to mindmap and you MUST have a knack to solve problems.

Go to http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages_by_type learn more about different programming languages and put on your thinkibg caps.

The internet is a world.

You are the GOD's of the internet.

A GOD doesnt look for work in his world.

Before I go ahead let me introduce myself. I am a certified database administrator and a professional website developer. I am a startup business owner with a small clientele but I am looking forward to expand to become bigger in the nearest future, but......

Is it only me feeling this or do other IT Professionals feel the same way? Are we neglecting IT in this country? We are supposed to be the technology drive force of this country but it seems most of us are struggling getting our feet stable on the ground. When I talk about IT Professionals, I mean the core ones who have either certified or undergone a certain degree of training in fields like Database Administration, website and mobile apps development, Programming and software development, systems audit, network administration, hardware maintenance and engineering etc.

I need answers, what is the future of IT in Nigeria? We see entertainment and agriculture growing in the country but I feel IT is completely neglected

It is my understanding that many IT professionals go into the field to be self employed or consultants, so they are entrepreneurs by this measure, but why can't we access loans and startup credit facility to establish our own companies and build on what we already have invested lots of money in? It costs a lot of money to get trained in IT so I think we deserve some credit and empowerment from government

I need answers and suggestions please. Thank You.

I feel your pains bro. Its mutual.

I think the number one problem would be our government.

The government has made it difficult for indigenous experts and allowed this Asians to take over the entire Nigerian It market.

The Asians have messed up the labour marker and out NLC and TUC have been very unproactive about it

What is an 'IT Professional'?

Information Technology is not a profession.

Perhaps if we discussed the topic without applying broadstrokes of the brush we might be able to assess the problem with more insight.

The problem is that most IT professionals are not really that good in their field they focused more on certification rather than the knowledge, and also many go into it because of the potentials they thought it will bring them not because they had passion for it and finally most people who did not study IT or well trained can also do most of the jobs the IT professionals do for far cheaper fee and for the organized IT professional with companies, Clients prefer the Indians and other Nigerians that have made it Big over time not someone coming up. And IT need to be further broken down into much more specific duties.

The government has a vital role to play to nurture young IT professionals. However, this particular sector has been neglected, there are few initiatives an aspiring IT professionals who are passionate and want to start their own enterprise.
I personally think every IT professionals should learn to develop the rudiment business skills needed to successfully start and sustain a business and also learn to safe and understand the processes required to take a loan if need be to start an enterprise.
Many successful IT companies today, the likes of Apple, Microsoft were born out of passion from the inventors and many started with their own personal saving and loans from family and friends.
Waiting for FG to set up an enabling environment for IT to strive may not yield to any fruition.

Most of us are over worked. The pay sef is not equivalent to the burden and struggle we go through. But really must the government come to our aid before we make it big? We can do something of our own without the government aid, the big guys across hardly had government aid but over here, any little thing we look forward to the government be the catalyst.

Don't you think it's time to sell your skill in another market? That seems to be the easy way out.

We have societies like that in Nigeria, but truth is they have nothing to offer.

they lack creativity, they should join hands to form a formidable force. They are meant to be the backbone of a society cos without software we can do new plans, so they should drive their knowledge towards that direction.

Play your cards well and try to push your ideas to limelight. Get customers for your products/company and grow.

Government support programmes for IT in Nigeria been politicized and its an in-house game. Most of of the programmes are designed and controlled for personal benefits of those in the government and their relatives and friends and they have little or no knowledge of other industries where they dont operate. #Techlaunchpad #IdeaNigeria

Lets hope CHANGE will change this soonest.

Very good question.i have been thinking about it for a while. When you talk about technology in Nigeria, everyone thinks phones and laptops. No one is talking about infrastructure.

i think most businesses don't care about technology if they can save money by doing things manually.

I went to see someone in an insurance company in Lagos 2 years ago and i noticed most of their staff were playing games on PC and laptop and i asked why they were not working on their computer. The guy said their server died 3 months ago so they have been doing thing manually (Paper and biro). i was shocked. No backup server also. With that type of mentality, how will IT infrastructure grow?

It's only in Nigeria that IT professionals are being treated like a piece of cabbage. In advanced countries they are Demi gods, also parastatals, private coys and government inclusive are part of the problem. The sooner government start taking the IT sector seriously just like petroleum, agriculture et al....then we will ser great improvement.
Re: Are IT Professionals Being Neglected In Nigeria? by kishimi8(m): 3:27pm On Jun 07, 2015
ok you talked about startups.. most of the it professional's I've met hardly want to set up a startup ,, you all go get certifications and wait for someone to employ u.. why would I employ someone that learns how to maintain and implement another person's creation ,, but when he is asked to make something original he comes up short ,,,

ok go setup your start up using your own skills.. if you have a good idea apply for youwin.
but stop complaininanf do somethingg.

You made a point right there boss.

You bet the neglect of IT sector is one of the causes of stunted technological advancement in the country.

IT is a wonderful field that has not reached its potential. May be u should consider travelling outside.
I like the field u mentioned. Did you study in Naija ? And what professional certifications do you have in the said field ?
Re: Are IT Professionals Being Neglected In Nigeria? by bigtt76(f): 3:36pm On Jun 07, 2015
Yes IT professionals are being negl3cted because companies and organizations that hitherto would have required their services. These organizations prefer to outsource same to other service providers who in turn hire and recycle the IT professionals amongst their clients so very few spaces are left vacant to be occupied.

Government too fall in the same outsourcing category.

The IT professionals on their part don't help the situation, they are quick to jump for peanuts on the side to execute projects rather than insist on the norm or like one comment noted are not ingenuious enough to come out with an original concept that would go places.

Now this is it. There is what we call Standard. There is a standard in Medical field, Engineering field, Architectural field, Aeronautical field and also the IT field.

The standard in the IT sector is regulated by CPN just like we have COREN in engineering. You have to be a registered IT Professional ie CITP to benefit what other IT professionals are benefiting else you'll be left behind.

Certifications like CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, SQL, NET ADMIN etc are wonderful but they are not enough to place you there.
Be a registered IT professional CITP and you won't have to post this ever again.

Thank me later.

you are on spot bro. Am getting inducted this Wednesday. I was thinking am doing something crazy spending money on the course. I pray it pays me soonest

Re: Are IT Professionals Being Neglected In Nigeria? by alienvirus: 3:43pm On Jun 07, 2015
I think the problem of neglect is multifaceted.

1. Gross incompetence of the so called professionals.

2. Bad economy that leads to massive retrenchment and ultimate neglect of IT professionals.

3. Scheming out of IT professionals in most businesses. They are seen as those that don't generate money to the company. They take all the time. But IT is the backbone of today's businesses.

4. Ignorance of those that determine the economy. They see IT department as useless. They prefer archaic ways of doing things like manually keeping files, sending letters through NITEL etc. They kill IT.

I will stop here for now.

you right there. i think thing will be better if there is a policy in Nigeria about storing data in organisations. i see companies still use paper and biro and the only time they use computers is just to type a letter and printout documents from e-mails.
