jacabi:

In case of 3 & 4, what's the suitable treatment to apply?
3. Keep insect under control.
4. You may correct that with fertilizer of higher trace elements such as 10-10-10. ( i think)

pls can tomatoes b planted directly?
No. Tomato can not be planted directly because the seed are very delicate and needs the utmost care at the right condition to survive

Sorry to derail your thread but a quick solution is needed. The leaves of some stands in my pepper farm is still folding even after i have applied fungicide(Z FORCE by name). Pls i need solution house.(note am using only dried poultry manure as fertilizer)
How did you treat your soil?. What have you applied or have been applying in term of fertilizer etc
Re: Step By Step Guide For Growing Tomato--pictures by jethro2: 10:35pm On Jun 09, 2015
@ Bhurlagy.
Once the foundation is wrong the house can not stand.
Vegetables are very delicates and one needs to get it right from the begining.
Your Soil is very important.
You need to know the history of the soil before planting.
By history i meant what was planted there before.
Steps in raising a healthy plant include but not limited to:
1. Treat the soil by sterilization or solarisation. Both nursery beds and the field
2. Use poultry waste or other organic content to revive the soil
3. Use resistance seed
4. Nursery management is very essential.
5. Regular and consistence watering.
6. Use net to protect against insects.

The possibility of having a healthy annd productive plant greatly reduced if any of the step is omitted.

Its hard and by luck for vegetables to recover or survive once they are infected.

Prevention is better than cure really applies to vegetables especially tomatoes.

Its one of the most delicate crop to plant.

I hope you are able to salvage some of your plants?

I also hope this help to some extent even if its coming late.

Best of luck

To sterilize; You cook the soil to a very high temperature. This will kill all the remnants nematodes eggs from the previous season planting.
Solarise; During the preparation of the soil after ploughing you leave it to receive maximum sunlight for minimum of 2 weeks or more.
Tsetse fly/ white fly: Some hybrid tomatoes are resistance to this

The local method: Get some dongoyaro seed. Grind and soak in water for a week or more. Sieve the content and use the water as insecticide to spray the chilli pepper.
2. Plant basil leave intervally within the pepper farm.

Common method.
Use insecticide.
But over time insects becomes resistance to the insecticide.

Best is to keep trying different methods

Applying furadan:
Make a circle around the root of pepper of about 0.5cm distance. Apply furadan to form a ring or circle around the root

Depends on the population of insects disturbing your pepper farm. If you use a mild mixture and the insects are still there.
Then increase the concentration.
Dongoyaro is neem tree.
You can google neem fertilizer for more info

This sounds interesting, please read.

http://businessdayonline.com/2015/06/gems4-plastic-crates-initiative-seen-as-solution-to-tomato-wastage/

Plastic crates introduced by Growth and Employment in States (GEMS4) are seen as formidable solutions to incessant tomato wastage in Nigeria.

Africa’s largest economy is rated as the second largest producer of tomatoes in Africa and 13th in the world but about 41 percent of the crop is lost in transit from the North to the South as a result of poor handling practice.

Locally grown tomatoes often wilt on the vine and rot in raffia baskets on the road to market.

In an effort to address this wastage, GEMS4 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Mile 12 Market Tomatoes Association on the use of plastic crates for tomatoes instead of the conventional raffia basket.

The GEMS4 plastic crates initiative, which is funded by Department for International Development (DFID), is targeted at improving the quality of packing materials used in perishable produce sector as well as reduce damage and losses.

“We need to improve our market materials. Transportation of tomatoes in raffia basket results in 41 percent of tomatoes being lost in transit from North to South but with plastic creates, it has been reduced to five percent,” said Richard Ogundele, Intervention Manager, GEMS4, during the signing of the MoU at Mile 12 market last Thursday in Lagos.

“For high value market to come to Mile 12 market and patronize tomatoes sellers, they need to change their handling behaviour, materials and change the way they present their goods,” he said.

Ogundele also noted that the initiative is providing opportunities for banks to play along and expand their agricultural lending portfolio.

A big challenge to agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria is lack of adequate infrastructure to support food production and distribution.

“The government also has a role to play. We cannot work on the value-chain without the government providing the enabling environment,” said Adesina Fagbenro-Byron, DFID South West Coordinator.

According to Haruna Mohammed, chairman of the perishable section of Mile 12 market, represented by Shehu Usman, “I was with GEMS4 in South Africa to see a lot of good handling practices and I know it’s a welcome development to Mile 12 market.”

“The environment we sell in Mile 12 is very poor unlike that of South Africa where you can actually sleep,” Usman said.

Arafat Hossain, Senior Intervention Manager, GEMS4, said it will have a transformational impact if all the traders adopt this kind of good practice. According to Hossain, when this is done, there will be surplus of tomatoes in the market.

“We are trying to do something on good handling practices. We need a lot of cooperation’s from the traders,” he said.

He further noted that the challenge the plastic initiative is facing is the attitude of the sellers to embrace change. He also said to address the challenge all stakeholders should come together and make some changes, while looking at the funding, profitability and the commercial sustainability.

Tomato seedlings need strong, direct light. Days are short during winter, so even placing them near a very sunny window may not provide them with sufficient natural light. Unless you are growing them in a greenhouse, your best option is to use some type of artificial plant lighting, for 14-18 hours every day. o ensure the plants grow stocky, not spindly, keep the young plants only a couple of inches from florescent grow lights. You will need to raise the lights (or lower the plants) as the seedlings grow. When you're ready to plant them outside, choose the sunniest part of your vegetable tomato garden. smiley

Here is another resourceful thread for tomato.
